Shocker (/s), Dotson Enters Transfer Portal

As we all saw online, his departure from the team was about touches, THAT was his “personal matter.” Bottom line, he decided two days before a game he was going to take his ball and go home before burning his last year of eligibility…. Hope it works out better than Kevin Thomson…

I’ll be shocked if his next destination doesn’t work out better than Kevin Thomson. Dot is a stud. With an outside chance to play at the next level.

Taylor and Co. have done a lot of really good things during their short time at Sac State. Their handling of Elijah Dotson isn’t one of them. They did showcase his pass catching skills, but they neutered him as a runner. Which as I said before is something their offense has done before. They had Daniyel Ngata and underutilized him as a runner too.

Ironic thing is, they’ve recently been giving Cameron Skattebo the touches they wouldn’t give Dotson. They kept rotating Dot, Perk and Fulcher seemingly every play or every other play. They haven’t been doing that near as much lately.

Oh well, what’s done is done. I’ll be rooting hard for Elijah wherever he lands. And I’m excited about the backs Sac State still has in the fold, especially Skattebo who like Dotson I’ve followed through HS. He’s another all-around stud.

Yeah, I mean - I hope he does well. But something was off with Dot since his fabulous 2019 season - and not just his new vegetarian diet, trimmed down physique, etc.

He did not look like the same player over the his 46 touches this season. 3.4 ypc - Perk, Fulcher, and Skat (8.4!) all have averaged more ypc over more carries. You could say that’s due to offenses keying on Dotson or whatever, but bottom line, I didn’t expect Taylor to force feed Dot, and this team has weirdly taken off since he left it.

One of the best to ever suit up for the Hornets, and I hope he kills it somewhere else next year to make us look good - but, very cool how this team has stepped up in his absence.

This is similar to mine line of thinking.

Dotson will most certainly at the very least land at a G5 if not a P5 school. Dark horse Cal Poly with his old RB coach there. But Dotson was not excellent this year. Two big factors I see, O’Hara become the lead rusher for the offense. O’Hara keeps the ball most of the option plays, and no offense to O’Hara, I’d very much have Dotson run the ball (ball security, speed, etc, etc). And the other item which the coaching staff themselves said was a problem at the beginning of the year, the O-line. The o-line was terrible at the beginning of the year and got hit with the injury bug. We’re starting a redshirt freshman AND a true freshman at the line. Very uncommon for a D1 team. If Dotson would have stuck it out, maybe (most likely), he’d be back to getting 80yrds plus a game but this point in the season. Just hate to see a talent that was developed in-house and now, some other program gets to reap the reward. Water under the bridge at this point. We wish him the best.

(If he makes it to the league, he won’t be saying, Dotson, Sacramento State University).

Agree with what has been said. The offense Taylor runs is different than what he was recruited into. But I agree his production would have increased as the OL improved.

Oh well, best of luck to him.

I love Elijah Dotson like the rest of you, have followed him since high school, but… The is a team sport, the Hornets are winning and we are stacked at the RB position. The coach needs to do what it takes to win and not worry about hurting feelings out there. On the flip side, it is Elijah’s right if he is not happy, to enter the portal and find a place that is. I wish him well, but I care more about us winning!

Dotson has two scholarship offers so far. One from Paul Peterson at Dixie State and one from Northern Colorado.

Doesn't surprise me to hear about Northern Colorado offering him. Besides losses from graduation, sounds like several others are looking to get out of there:

Interestingly Dotson's Twitter account no longer exists, and his 247 page also no longer has his story. (Perhaps 247 automatically pulls from his Twitter feed?)

He’s playing at UNC now

Is there any links to this story? I wouldn’t doubt this, but I just searched for this and couldn’t find anything.
He's listed on their 2022 roster. https://uncbears.com/sports/football/roster/elijah-dotson/8773

Wow. What a weird move for him. Eddie Mac must have promised him 30 touches per game. His production tailed off, but I thought he could do better than UNC in the transfer portal, yikes.

What a very low key move for him, no mention of this on the UNC’s Twitter page, he deleted his own Twitter account and none of the FCS writers are tweeting about this. I agree, Eddie Mac must have promised him a lot of touches.

Interesting lateral move, or almost lateral. I don't get this one...

WOW! I'm very late on this one.

I just discovered that Dot was at UNCO then came here to find that it was known 4 months ago. I'm not sure how this bit of news bypassed me.

Anyway, color me surprised as well.

I'm thinking 2 things are likely here and maybe even both.

First, the reasons given by Coach Taylor were "coach speak" and not necessarily truth. Just stated not to be negative or pile on to Elijah's decision.
Which seems clear that he was unhappy with his role and decided to bail. It wasn't solely due to "family issues" as IIRC was previously stated.

Secondly, Elijah clearly didn't get the interest he believed he would from FBS programs or other top end FCS schools. I am a bit shocked by that.

He clearly can be uber productive in a lead back role with a team that focuses on the run. FCS teams such as Weber State and South Dakota State quickly come to mind.

One thing is for sure. The HOME game against UNCO on October 8th sure got a helluva lot more interesting. I'm sure Dot has that date circled on his calendar already....

If he is not injured.

So true.

Eh, I don’t recall Dot being super injury prone his 1st couple seasons.

And even then, the injury thing has been a team wide problem especially late in the season and got big games.

Thomson, Pierre Williams, and Dot all missed time or played less than 50% in the postseason games.

I'm not trying to diminish Dotson's contributions in his earlier seasons but the fact is the Hornet roster improved significantly at the RB position to the point he was no longer able to compete successfully for significant PT. At that point he decided to prove the coaching staff wrong by testing the transfer waters and in the end very few teams felt he could make a significant contribution. For those of you who still think he's an NFL caliber back, all I can say is
