Signed Recruiting Class

I know there may be a few of you that might disagree, but, and this is totally my opinion, I believe that next seasons class might be the most talented that Weber will be adding in sometime. To find a class as talented, we might have to go to Boyettes year, or earlier, late 90s when Ron A brought in "The Show" and "The Thrill." If you add Mook and Hajek to the mix thats a class that adds a player at every single position who can play right away. Nobody in the Sky can match Weber's 2011 class.

PG: Gelaun Wheelwright
SG: Michael Brown
SF/CG: Shai Fields
PF: Mook
C: Jame Hajek.

Yes, I know that Lillard is a star but the other players signed in that class are both...hmmmm...gone. These five look to be players who are going to give the team immediate depth. All of these guys are going to able to play right away. This just shows how much has changed since Rahe took over the program. In 05-06 we, as Weber fans, could never have dreamed of getting these types of players. If Rahe is able to sign Collette in the Spring, that will be the icing on top of the Cake. He would be a huge addition to the program in three years once he finishes his mission. If I was him, I'd sign with Weber right now. Granted, he does have USU looking at him, but nobody has offered except Weber.

I can't believe that Weber isn't selling out the Dee...with the talent coming in. If Lillard stays (I'm hoping he sticks around for his senior year) Weber will have the best team in the state next year. Yes, we are losing Morris, but we have Mook and Hajek practicing everyday with the team. They will understand the offense and be ready to play. Also, Fulton and Tresnak are becoming beasts. They have looked great along with Richardson and Bamforth. I'm really excited for the the future of Weber State basketball. Hell we haven't even seen what Porter can do yet, next week against SUU.

I agree that this is a very tallented group. However, until they play for a while, we won't really know how they compare with other classes. James and Mook are going to play a lot next year. We may only loose one guard off of this years team. All three of these guards are tallented enough to contribute as freshmen. However, in order to not waist a year of eligibility on any of them, it is likely that two of them will redshirt. Redshirting will be beneficial to any of them that get the opportunity to do it. They will have a year to mature, grow, learn and get ahead on their classes. It is exteamly hard for any freshman to step right into a D1 program and start, right off the bat.

The other intangible is how hard they will be willing to work to make themselves into better players, students and teammates. They may be great highschool players right now, but that does not equal a good D1 player, at all. They all need to grow into the role. It isn't easy. In the past we have had some highly reguarded recruits who were not able to make the transition. For now, they all have potential, unrealized as it is.

The Hajek kid looks particularly impressive to me. He is listed at 6-10 but he's not even 18 yet. Plus he already has the wingspan of a 7-footer. He could potentially hit 7-foot and be the first successful big man WSU has had since David Patten.

I was there. The Judge player had a 20 ft lead on everyone. Michael caught him, blocked the shot, raced to the other end, got fouled, made both FTs, got a steal on defense, got fouled again, again made both, and won the game for his team. They had played a box and one on him all night, and he still scored in the 20s. He has a great handle and can stroke it from anywhere. Our fans are going to love this guy.

I'm really impressed with Brown. The Wizard definitely got a steal when he signed Brown. There is gonna come a time when all the other instate coaches leave the court scratching their heads in frustration because they didn't try to sign him.

If you want to watch Shai Fields in action...ESPN is going to be showing the #1 Yates Lions (TX) vs. Findley Prep (NV) on the 16th. Yes, I know Weber will be playing Tulsa, but I'm sure watching Fields in action while listening to Carl Arky will be a night well spent.

Shai dropped 35 on someone last week, Micheal scored 21 on the top 4A school in the State, in a win, by the way, and coach Duft saw Gee Dub play and reports that he is the real deal as well. These are some exciting recruits. This class is looking better all the time.

Micheal will be playing at Bear River on the 22nd and at Juan Diego on the 28th. I think that both of these games are at 7:00PM. Someone update me if that is wrong. I'm going from memory. ;-)

ESPN has upped Gelaun Wheelwrights scouting # from 86 to 89. Currently, Wheelwright plays on a team with two other DI signees. Dominique Dunning (New Mexico) and Michael Cassey (Long Beach St.) they are both 90s.

Shai Fields is on a really good team. Coach Rahe said that Fields is the top scorer on the team, but usually only plays two quarters.

On Monday at the luncheon Coach said that two of the three will play next season.

I think Weber basketball with really have a run at best in the state in the next few years if not next year. A returning healthy Lillard to run the offense (cuz let be honest no one can do it like him) and then we are loaded at every poition including the point behind him. Even if we look at who plays now in Lillards absence with bamforth porter richardson and add fulton and tresnek we could have a great team with just them. Then if we add the players coming in off recruits and redshirts we have a deep bench and loads of talent.

Not only will Lillard be back next year, but he will have two years left for the Cats and will be at the development level of a SR. Also, Bamforth, Bullinger, Porter and Mahoney will be back at 100%. Add on Mook and Hajek, who have been practicing with the team and a good solid year of experience for the freshmen; Fulton, Davis, Tresnak, and Richardson's, all equals to Weber bringing back a very solid, deep, good team, with a lot of experience. An added bonus are these incoming recruits.

As for Spring recruiting. I know there aren't any scholarships available, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rahe adds two this spring. He could sign a player who is leaving on a mission (Collete from Murray) or possibly try to add a couple of walkon players.

As for the State...well...BYU is losing three starters (their best player ever among them Jimmer), Utah should be better, unless there are huge defections like last year, which I doubt happens. Utah State is losing a lot (Williams, Wesley, Elder Green, Newbold, Bendall [i think, to bad about his injury], Formisano). The Aggies are losing three starters and two excellent role players. SUU and UVU aren't teams we need to worry about.

I thought I'd go into a little more depth (its Friday, CATCAT isn't on gmail, and I'm pretty bored).

BYU: The Cougars are losing three maybe four players after this year. The biggest departure is Jimmer, of course, but they are also losing two other starters. Jackson Emery will be graduating and Kyle Collingsworth, the Happy Valley phenom, will be leaving for the two year stint. Also, there is a possibility that another Y player will be leaving for the stint. You never know about the Y's athletes either...that honor code sometimes become blurry, but every once in a while one gets sent packin. However, the Y does get back two, that I know of, big time automatic Missionary's back. Former Weber recruit, and Lone Peak star center Nate Austin returns along with Orem High standout Ian Howard. Both are bigs. The Y signed another big, but he is expected to leave on a mission this summer. The biggest recruit the Y is getting is DeMarcus Harrison. He is LDS, and is expected to leave on a mission after his Freshmen year. However, since he will be a Fresh, there is speculation that he might be red-shirted, but lately Rose has been playing his Fresh before having them leave (Collingsworth this season and Tyler Haws last season)

Utah: Utah only loses one player to graduation; high flying Jay Watkins. He is the third leading scorer on the Utes team, but the Utes are stacked with a lot of potential. Glover, O'brien, Hines, and Washburn are all underclassmen now who will stick around and, hopefully for the Horses A$$ Boylen, will pan out next year. The Utes will also have big man Foster and leading scorers Will Clyborn & Josh Watkins around. Not only that, but Boylen is bringing in a highly touted wing in George Matthews to replace the departing Watkins. However, the past couple of seasons have seen a number of Ute players leave at the conclusion of the season. I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that 2011 will be the same.

Utah State: As said earlier USU is losing some of their most dynamic players ever. Tai Wesley, the stunningly awful floper Newbold, Elder Green, and Poop Willilams, along with Formisano and Nate Bendal. Stew has done an adequate job planning for these players departures by bringing in JC recruits. For the past decade, He has been able to solidify the middle by brinigng in JC players, and next year will be some of the same for the Aggies. USU is brining in Antelope Community College PF Kyisean Reed and Skyview big Jordan Stone. I've seen Stone in person and I'm not impressed. I'm guessing he will be leaving on a mission, come back for a year, go to SLCC or Southern Idaho, and play for the Ag's after two years of JC development. In other words, he'll pull a Bendal. However, the Ag's do have a lot of talent returning and they will have prized recruit Antonio Bumpus available. He along with Pane, Jardine, Reed, and Medlin (I'm not sure who their starting five will be but I'm pretty sure about 4 of them) with role players Grimm (former Ute, to bad Weber didn't get him) and Walker I'm expecting the Ag's to be good again. Another 20 win season for State, mostly because they play 18-19 home games every year and mostly DI teams that are part of the Sun Belt, Patriot, or Southland conference. However, that will be Weber's lost soon. In two seasons Weber will be getting at least 4 more home games a year. So I'm not complaining (once the Sky goes to a 20 conference games schedule; I'm sure Weber can get 5 or 6 OCC home games).

I'm thinking the best teams other than Weber will be:
1. Utah
2. USU
3. BYU
4. SUU
5. UVU
Good thing Weber gets four of them at the DEE.

So we are playing UVU next season at home?
