Does it really matter how good the recruiting class is? Collins has had guys that are in the currently NFL like Seth and Jace Davis. We only won less than 6 games a season with these guys starting, idk... how optismtic can we really be guys? Either these NFL teams are stupid, or these players are legit and Collins couldn't win many games with NFL talent. Just a point. I understand recruiting time is very exciting and create hype.

Let's get one thing straight, Seth and Jace are not "in the NFL," they're on the fringes of practice squads and I for one will be shocked if either of them ever takes a snap in a regular season NFL game.

I'm not sure I would try to prove my point by putting down the accomplishments of former players...

I'm not trying to prove a point, I'm just stating a fact. It's not like Lobato and Davis are Vincent Jackson and Aaron Smith or anything.

Jesus christ, you're like the guy who bets the Do Not Pass line at the craps table. NFL practice squad is a major deal -- however you slice it. There's legions of graduating college football players, many of them with dominant careers, who would die to be on any practice squad. Jace Davis has freak ability, he could easily play on Sundays, and Collins put his ass on the bench.

That being said, I don't think talent has ever been a problem at UNC, but this signing class looks pretty suspect.

Really? You're going to blame Collins for suspending Jace - and the others? I don't know the situation, but Collins did bench him for a reason. NFL talent on Big Sky teams don't always equate to wins. Look at Montana. They've got about 10 guys right now on NFL rosters, and looking at that alone, you would think they're winning the FCS championship every year. They're always competitive but they haven't been to the chipper in a number of years.

Looks as though this forum has gotten quite off topic. Since it is rumored that the Bears are changing their offense this year to a spread offense, maybe the new signees are tailored to that. It does look like there were quite a few receivers this round.
Click on the table below to see last year's stats for the recruits. The-out-of-stater's could not all be found. Bold numbers indicate stat leader for that category:

Thanks for putting that together.

Brock Clark's numbers are staggering. Seems like there may be a couple of game breakers on that list.

Brock Clark and Alex Delacroix will be playing LB, the game breaker in the bunch is Frye. He put up those kind of numbers for 2 years while seeing double and triple coverage.

I just read this subject line and I would like to comment on two points:
1. There are only a limited amount of weekends just before the National Signing day in February. I think it is either 3 or 4. In any case, these are very significant weekends for ALL NCAA football programs. This past January UNC had no visitors on one of those weekends. Not a good sign.
2. Talent is over-rated. All football coaches will tell you that they would rather have athletes who consistently play with passion (heart) and execution (between the ears), over a player who just has talent.

Regarding the second point, it is my opinion that it is up to coaches to bring in players with the attributes of passion and execution, as well as bring in players who need to improve in these attributes. Successful teams have this kind of blend of "characters." It is up to the coaches to develop this mixture of athletes into a team (family) that consistently performs on the field.

One more related point, I believe that the "skill set" that the UNC coaches have failed to recruit, develop or recognize, is the skill set of physicality. Skill sets and offensive schemes are over-rated if you can't physically dominate the other team.

I think they've done well with talent at every position besides offensive line. Our O line is horrible.

I agree with you that we have enough talent at most positions to be successful on the field. There was some good news to come out of Spring Ball about the O line. One of last year's starters lost his 1st team position. That means that Coach Wilkre is developing some competition and depth with his O line. Hopefully the demoted lineman will come back in the fall a little nastier and meaner, adding to the competitive environment.

That's good news. Wikre is very inexperienced as a coach. I wasn't impressed with how the line performed last season, but I'm not sure if it was due to inexperience or poor coaching.
