Yes, there is a balance, the team is terrible but I do think they are bringing in good kids it's just that they are overmatched and undercoached but if they use the scholarship and graduate then ultimately that's most important.
Blofeld,
You keep saying that the team is terrible and is over matched. Have you taken a look at the stats on the UNC football website from this season? In most games this team had more first downs, more total yards, and more time of possession than most of their opponents. What they failed to do is capitalize on their opportunities and put the ball in the end zone. In reality, they should have been 4-1 to start off this past season. I'm not whining but they scored twice on the goal line against Texas State and got bad calls, they certainly had the opportunity to beat NAU but for a mishandled snap in the last seconds, and they lost on a hail Mary with no time on the clock at Cal Davis. They then beat Idaho State at home.
This season could have been a lot different if they had been 4-1 instead of 1-4 to start off if only from a psychological perspective. This is in no way a terrible team. They just need to learn how to finish off an opponent when they have the opportunity. The only teams they were over matched by this season were Purdue and Montana.
Keep in mind that Downing's first recruiting class was only sophomores this season and in reality he only had a few weeks to put that class together after taking the job. You know, the football players read the stuff on this message board as well, I suppose, and when they keep reading the crap that is spewed on here it's no wonder that they're not as excited to play for UNC as they should be.
I've heard there's going to be upgrades to the football facilities this summer and that should help in recruiting. We'll also know what kind of recruiting class they'll have this coming February and I'm optimistic that it will be a good one with hopefully the pieces this team needs to turn the program around. A little support from the students and community would help as well.
