Special Teams and Coach Bobby April

Mouse on Offense, Jerry G. on Defense. Bobby April on Special Teams. Hmmm. /users/31/07/37/smiles/eusa_th2.gif I would say that Special Teams can account at times for some 25-30 percent of a team's scoring.

Now that Eric Azorr, for example, who has kicked so well for the team, has---according to the NCAA---consumed his eligibility, one wonders who is likely his successor?

So in consideration of covering all our bases, the coaches obviously have confidence in the development and coaching of Special Teams through Bobby April. /users/31/07/37/smiles/whistleb.gif I believe we should also hold such confidence.

Just out of curiosity, is there much we know about his approach, background, and the favorable expectations he has garnered for success in this role?

Bobby April is 44 years old. He has extensive experience in the NFL (Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams)and college (Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Arizona and the University of Southern California). In 2004 he produced a training video called ''Punt Coverage Teaching Progressions'' which is sold today for $40.00. The promotional blurb is:

"Provides a comprehensive look at the key elements involved in effective punt coverage. In an easy-to-understand manner, the video presents an overview of proven drills that coaches can use to introduce punt coverage to their teams and players. The video features footage of player meetings held at the St. Louis Rams' facilities, and a film critique of the Rams' practice sessions involving special teams. The video reviews efforts that were undertaken during the Rams' mini-camp and early training sessions. All work is done without pads and emphasizes the techniques and skills that teams and players must master to execute punt coverage successfully. Covers techniques, concepts, and drills of the following topics: Tackling, punt protection, escaping blocks at the line of scrimmage, and punt coverage."

I think that is the father and we have the son, but nonetheless I know Glanville was quite pleased with the hire of April and both Glanville and Davis know the importance of special teams. Losing Azorr was big loss, but let's see what happens this fall.

Just to let you know, Bobby April is not in charge of all the special teams. He just has the title. He coaches the Punt Team. Mouse coaches the Punt Return Team. Glanville coaches the Kickoff Team. Emberton coaches the Kickoff Return Team. If you ever went to practice you would have saw this.
