It's obvious something happened off the field with Sperbeck. A coach doesn't just resign after spring practice out of the blue going into his make or break season. My best wishes to he and his family.
No so fast, with the Osterhout call.
I'd call these guys first,
Turk Shonert (NFL/UFL OC)
Paul Wulff (49ers OA)
Andy Buh (Cal ex-DC)
John Defilippo (Raids OC)
Scott Beattie (Cal Lute DC)
FYI, Paul Wulff is no longer with the 49ers. He is OC and OL Coach at South Florida. Wulff signed with USF in JAN 2013....

He left on literally hours of notice and no one in the program had any idea he had even applied elsewhere until his bags were pack. If he wanted to move on fine, but he certainly could have done it much differently.
I never suggested that Osterhout or Baiz should have been the DC. My criticism of Sperbeck is that he fired two solid assistants and recruiters for the sake of hiring an inept DC. Poor management.
Has anyone tried to count up all of the assistants he hired and then fired during his tenure? Here's a clue...it a lot more than the two who keep coming up.
I'm not a bit confused about the facts regarding Sperbeck
He could not win more than 6 games in a season.
He could not contend for a Big Sky championship...much less win one.
He could not beat Davis even when he had better talent.
He could not assemble and/or retain a quality staff.
He will be remembered for the fact that he lost his job over NCAA violations...I don't know of any other coach in the history of Sac State athletics who has that tag.
Not one personal attack...just the facts.

As mentioned this has only happened once in the D1 era. Seems like Sperbeck was par for the course based on the numbers.OldSchoolHornet said:I'm not a bit confused about the facts regarding Sperbeck

Has never happened before in Hornet history. So he was on par yet again. He could not contend for a Big Sky championship...much less win one.
Volek (D1 era): 2-5He could not beat Davis even when he had better talent.
Meh. Peterson is a gem and the offense has been solid under him. The OL was solid under Riley who was hired away to the best FCS gig in the land. Defense has largely been a disappointment for the past decade. Would rather see various coaches cycle through then sticking with the same ones year after year who continue to fail at delivering results. He could not assemble and/or retain a quality staff.
Volek went out in a cloud of Pam…there is even photo evidence of this cheating incident (and a national headline to boot). I guess determining what is more embarrassing for the program is a matter of opinion, so IMO I would put laughable on the field cheating scandal far above extended phone calls and unapproved visits. He will be remembered for the fact that he lost his job over NCAA violations...I don't know of any other coach in the history of Sac State athletics who has that tag.
So basically you are claiming Sperbeck was a terrible coach yet the on the field results are no worse than what we have historically seen while the academic side of the program has been cleaned up. Just the facts. Spin harder, then maybe next time something will stick. Not one personal attack...just the facts.
Yup. There is time for this team to pull together and refocus on next season. The seniors need to step up and lead. If they do that then I think this team will be fine next season. Roughly 4 months until the season kicks off, plenty of time to get it in gear and prepare to make a statement this season.Phantom Hornet said:If there is one silver lining, its that this happened in the late spring after recruiting has closed. Most of these guys are already locked in for the year, and even if they wanted to transfer, its so late in the process. If this had happened in January it could have been disastrous
Oldhornet23 said:Sears Contract in Weber was stated if he did not win at least 6 games they can terminate him, would people in here be interested in giving him a 3 year deal saying he needs to at least win 7?
SDHornet said:I agree Sears is the front runner for the full time gig. At this point it’s his job to lose. With what is returning coupled with the weak schedule it would be a terrible move to keep him on if he can’t get 7+ wins. By the CP game (week 8) everyone should know if he is worth hanging on to. :twocents:

OK #5 was just a fantasy....
What “done deals” are you referring to? Only thing close was the Spanos “donation” for the Fieldhouse that he never fully lived up to.Super Hornet said:OldGreen67 said:5 - OG67 wins lotto and builds new Football and Basketball facility for Sac State...

Winning the lottery and wanting to funnel the proceeds toward facilities improvements is admirable, but begs the question of the school accepting the funds and moving forward with the projects. They have a history of getting "cold feet" and pulling out of "done deals."
