Spring Ball Updates

any reports from the most recent practice?

+1 Any updates from those who have been to the practices?
Tuesday's practice was pretty heated... lots of post play scuffles. Lots of intensity out there... can't wait until they're dishing it out on opponents instead of each other. LB John Goldwire is beastin' it up out there. Trenton Pinson is playing CB now. Chandler Gayton is looking pretty good, had an INT. Think I also heard something about Burgett moving to Safety. BLM has been sitting out with a minor knee issue, so the rest of the QBs are getting plenty of reps... should be a great battle for the backup spot between Panelli, Gauthier and Vitto. Bronson runs real hard, compliments Mario's style well - Smash and Dash  . Is it fall yet?

Thanks for some blow by blows on practice. I know the coaches are working hard on the Corners, is apears to be our soft spot, I did not want to say weak because I don't think it will be. It just is not as strong as the rest of the D.

SE-174,
I agree with everything you have stated. The portion of Burgett, I think was said in a joking manner. Don't quote me, we will have to see. Tomorrow will be practice, will attempt to get there. Supposed to rain, "Sugar Melts" especially Brown Sugar

No rush on the DVD, let me know what you think of it. Thanks for the Pic. Vic

EasternAlum88,
Sorry I didn't see this request before now. I did talk with Chris Power on Friday last week, he is supposed to be going in for Surgery on his left shoulder. He said it not a bad surgery, hope he is correct. Gabe is supposed to have some knee injections on Friday. Forgot what it is called. They both seemed like they want to get it over, so they can return to work. :thumb:

I am very impressed the way the team looks, they are looking great, even with a few days of practice. This team is going to be an even Stronger Team than last year, I may be wrong, attend some of the practices, let me know what you think.

The team really was hitting very hard yesterday. Check out Screaming Eagle-174 of yesterday. Markeem Adams did come in this year, about a month ago, playing Defense. We have some walkons, will have to get their names. Jared Walker, WSU Transfer, Andru Pulu, UW Transfer, Pat Cook, fm California, will be great additions to the team. Coach Graham/Sawyer, are working the hell out of the DL, they are going to be scary, should they all stay healthy.

Guess Bird Adams taught he should have started as a Freshman, maybe that is why he didn't return. With the talent @ WR, it would have been rough. Now WR like Cory Mitchell, Alante Wright, who is looking great catching the balls, he have some great hands, will give us some dangerous WR along with Brandon Kaufman, Nick Edwards,Greg Heard,Tyler Hart. David Miles is now back to his old position, TE from Defensive Line.He seems very happy. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Nice to know about Markeem Adams, I thought he was one of the ones who was academically ineligible this past year. Good to know that he's still in the program. Also, interesting news about Pinson moving to defense. I would have though that with his speed we'd see him at WR, but we seem to be really loaded at that position. You can see that the defensive secondary is really going to be an area of special emphasis in the off-season, although I do think we have some really capable youngsters that were backups this season.

Seems like we have quite a few injuries this spring, hopefully most are just carry-overs from this past season that should resolve by this summer. Anyone know how Bo Levi dinged up his knee? I don't remember him having any issues with it during the season. Is he going to be taking any snaps during spring ball, or are the backups going to be getting most of the reps?

True words on Jackson and Powers. Gabe starts his injections today I believe, and Powers is getting the shoulder scoped on Monday. For Gabe it's a wait and see process with whiteblood cells from himself injected into his knee. This has a tendency to trick the body into thinking the injury is current and accelerates the healing process, he WILL be good to go. As for Chris, has some loosness in the left shoulder, played most of last year with it, it will get scoped and cleaned out, 3 to 4 weeks on the recovery period . Both of these guys are chomping at the bit but hope that by having these procedures now will allow for a stronger and more aggressive summer program of strenght and conditioning. Both of these guys are team leaders on the O-line and will go along way in determing next years success ! GOEAGS!

We're back to questioning the defense and secondary again this year? Same players it seems, so why the concern? We didn't give the D any credit last spring and yet they won most of the games last year. Tough crowd to please. Ouch!

I'll bring it with me to the Scrimmage on Sat. Sound being off doesn't really bother me because it's only off by a half sec or so, and you can only tell during half-time when the dim-wit is talking, which no one cares about anyway. Like you said, wish they had all the post game stuff. Oh well.

SE174,
You are correct about Scott Burgett, he is now a Safety for the team. We went out to the practice, and found out it wasn't a joke. BTW, he did look good at Safety, Jeff Minnerly was working with a walkon today, giving him help on what he needs to know/do. It was very cold, we left about 6pm, and they were still going at it. No scuffle today. :ohno: See you on Saturday, hope the weather is better.

There were some one on one, remember these names on "D" Pulu,Ceja,Kota,Williams,Dexter. These dudes are rough, they got to the QB each time. Grant Williams was back in practice, looking good along with Jakob Pugsley,Trenton Pinson,Ronnie Baines, etc.

I saw Mitchell to Mitchell connection a few times today. Bo going to older brother Cory. Cory doesn't miss many balls thrown to him. Got to go. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic

Not the defense, or secondary especially...but specifically the cb's. Pretty valid concern considering we lost both starting cb's.

The team looked real good today. Our D-line is going to tear the Big Sky up this year! Renard looked unstoppable (tipped pass, sack), and Pulu was stuffing the run pretty well. Ceja is only getting better and better, think he also had a sack today. I'm glad we play Montana early again this year, because from what I hear they're still having O-line trouble. They better get the ball out quick or it's going to be a long day for them.

Mario Brown is gonna put up some really good numbers this year. He only got 4 carries today, but each one was for about 7-8 yards. Bronson looks good as well, runs really hard. He'll be great for the short yardage situations. We'll see how much playing time he gets, but Marquise Moses looked really good as well. He's got some great footwork to get between the tackles.

Gauthier continues to impress me... I think he's going to win the backup spot, although Vitto is giving him a good fight. He (Nick) ran one in today on an option rollout. He could've had another at the other end of the field, but decided to throw; Burgett tipped it, and Chandler Gayton picked it off in the endzone and made a nice return... got like 15-20 yards out of it. Those two played lights out today. I think Gayton is a lock to fill one of the starting spots. He also had some PBUs of his own. Burgett looks like he has some pent up frustration as a QB, because he's been putting some hits on people. He had a tackle today that was lights out, could hear it at the top of the stands from clear across the field.

Cory Mitchell I think is earning himself significant playing time. He looked unstoppable today. Back to back plays from his brother, a deep bomber down the sideline over his shoulder, and then a sick one handed grab in tight coverage along the edge of the endzone for a TD. BLM might play favorites and give him the ball more, but if he keeps on making catches like he did today, I have no problem with it. He had 6 for 148 yards and a TD today. Cory, Brandon, Nick and Tyler are going to make defenses pay this year... I'd venture to say we have the best receiving corps in the Big Sky (again). :D

I like where we're headed. Is it fall yet?

I take it BK, Herd, and Nick Edwards haven't been practicing? I can't remember seeing any stats for them in the spring scrimmages.

I seem to remember hearing something about BK getting surgery in the off-season, but don't remember Edwards or Herd being dinged up. What gives?

Also, who is Marquis Moses, haven't heard of him before this post?

They've all been practicing, but I don't think Kaufman has been in any of the scrimmages. Both Herd and Edwards have been, and played today (Greg Herd 2-13, Nicholas Edwards 1-6).

Marquise Moses is a walk-on I believe. Not positive, you'll have to ask Vic. He's from Marysville, and used to/does do sports modeling. RB 5'11" 200lbs, graduated HS in '06.

Nice to meet you today. My concern is in your last sentence. I hope the team does not take it too seriously that they are the National Champs. The Spokane Shock were Champs last year as well and for some reason they started the season 1-4 (finally won on the road today).
The coaches can only give advise and encouragement but the kids need to keep working ALL summer. We will have the proverbial target on us next year. Every team will bring their A game and the Eagles better be ready, or there could be a real reality check the first 3 games.
I do agree the progress in the 3 scrimmages thus far has been noticeable.
I too like the direction we are headed but hope everyone stays real. I would not to start next season like the Shock have.
Go Eags!!

Go Eags!!

Good to meet you as well. Agreed on most points, but the Shock had to replace their OC. I have faith that the coaches aren't going to let the players rest on their laurels. ;)

I'm sure the team will come out fired up. Talking to the guys, they know its a tough road to hoe ! One thing thats hard to predict at this point in time is team chemistry, with so many starters not participating in spring practice and the majority of those starters team leaders summer workouts will be the key to success ! Bigger, faster, and stronger all happens in the off-season, lets hope it's their mission. GOEAGS!

To Screamin_Eagle174..... "Burgett looks like he has some pent up frustration as a QB, because he's been putting some hits on people. He had a tackle today that was lights out, could hear it at the top of the stands from clear across the field."

REALLY???? Your comment seems to base Scott's performance on pent up frustration as opposed to acknowledging perhaps he has a strong desire to play football. Per coach Baldwin: “Scott is doing well and competing hard,” said Baldwin. “I just love Scott Burgett so much as a person and respect how hard he’s worked since the day he got here.

So Scott embraces his coaches request to move to a new position as another QB did last season and all you comment is that his success is due to pent up frustration? REALLY?? Seems to me the young man wants to play and finally sees an opportunity to earn some substancial PT. Desire and competition are more acurate descriptions of his current performances on the field.

I think the "frustration" comment was meant to be tongue in cheek as opposed to a literal interpretation of Scott's motivation for excelling on the field.

The thing about EWU football that is hard for people to understand who haven't been on the inside is the spirit of competition that is not only preached by the coaching staff, but is demanded from your team mates. If you are just somebody who is content to coast along and go with the flow, you will wash out. I saw it plenty of times throughout my career. Conversely, if you are willing to do what is necessary and compete your ass off in every workout, drill and scrimmage, REGARDLESS of your roll, then you will have success. It sounds like Scott is the type of kid who is ready to embrace that competition and will work his ass off to win the job.

Luckily, the squad is full of kids like that who demand greatness from each other day in and day out. In the end it makes the Eags that much better.

Think you might have taken what was said a little too literally. As was stated, it was a little tongue in cheek and probably more of a compliment than any kind of insult whatsover.

And welcome to the board! :thumb:
