Spring Ball

Mustari should worry about covering everyday IMPORTANT Bears news before he writes a lazy opnion piece. For example, Dallas Anglin and Jordan Wilson both won't be apart of the men's basketball team next year. These two players were our best this year, and there has been nothing in the Tribune about their departures. Anglin was dismissed and Wilson is transferring. When two of your top players are leaving, you need to report that. He misses on SO much news it is crazy. I guess the people up in Greeley don't really care enough about UNC so he gets away with t. For those of us who actually want solid coverage, it's upsetting. They need to hire a few young/hungry journalists to provide exhaustive coverage of our teams.

I agree. It seems odd that two of your best players are transferring, yet the local reporter has said zero about it. People do care in Greeley, but the Tribune doesn't.

A couple days after I called him out for not reporting basic news, he writes a story on exactly what I called him out for...

Better late than never, Mustari.

I wonder how Mustari feels about BJ dictating a story to him to make himself look good in regard to the players that are leaving the basketball team on the day he get sacked for NCAA violations. I would think it would be embarrassing but Sam has no shame.

Enjoyed watching the spring game. I like what I saw some Samad Hinds especially on offense. The db's looked good as well. Lots of guys out though.

Hinds looked good when he caught the ball. Those two drops were ugly, and Knipp showed visible frustration with him. I was actually a little disappointed that Knipp would show that emotion -- don't want to hurt Hinds' confidence.

Anyways, offense looked great. Stephen Miller torched the DB's all day, for at least four long pass plays. I saw him score 2 touchdowns. I was also impressed with the new receiver Patrick Stephens, and the experiment of playing Ellis Onic as a running back (although that might just have been because all our backs were out -- they were also using Theron Verna there). Onic is so small he can sneak through holes and explode to the next level. I'm guessing that the Bears will use him all over next year -- slot/returner/outside/running back.

Knipp continues to get better and read defenses. He shredded the D, even with some drops. I am worried about our backup situation with Sloter -- he looked mediocre, and would be better playing receiver/tight end like last year. We need to get that freshman on campus and pick up a walk-on or two for depth.

Overall, good stuff though.

I also liked what Boobie Sanders brought. I've been praising this kid for several seasons now but he's struggled with injuries. I think he can be all-conference if he's healthy.

Don't worry about Sloter, he was fine when he went with the first team. Knipp didn't play with the 2's and 3's until much later and couldn't do anything either - he didn't move the ball at all. When Sloter was with first team, he looked great, scored and moved the ball every time. When Sloter was with the 2's and 3's, like Knipp, he didn't move it at all either. The OL is very thin, hopefully the coaches are looking to bring in 1-2 more before Fall.

It was great seeing Booby out there playing LB. I didn't know he had another year left. Our LB corps will be the leaders on D. The line and DBs didn't look as good as in the earlier scrimmage, but a lot of that can be attributed to playing a bunch of younger players.
On offense I agree with BearArms that Sloter looked good. The first team O-line also looked good. They opened up holes for RBs that will get little carries during the fall. The key to the offense being successful will be the health of the O-line and developing depth behind them. Speaking of RBs, I am glad we have a bunch, cause as I stated earlier, they all appear to be prone to injury. I heard that Riek was healthy and the staff was afraid of playing him because he might get hurt??? When I was a coach we would want to know who was susceptible to injury so that we would NOT rely on them during the season. And to add more mystery to our RB situation, I heard at the scrimmage that my favorite back, Cartegena may be academically ineligible because of grades. In any case I think our TEs and WRs will be awesome. Miller will have a break-out season.

Unfortunately Sloter is fighting an uphill battle. He is a Senior, transfer, and from out of state. Boyer always plays his favorites. Last year he went as young as he could on offense. He benched the majority of the upper classmen for selfish reasons. He did however bring Steve-O back into the mix when he saw he couldn't win without him. It's awesome to see Steve-O doing so well, he deserves it. If I were Knipp, Reik, Davis, and the other young guns, I would be very weary of Boyer and his tactics. In a year or two they will be old and be tossed to the curb.

I question Collins decision to have the first team offense play against the new Freshman defense in the Spring game. What was he trying to show.

I was impressed with the way the team looked on Saturday. Although the defensive schemes were very vanilla, the offense showed that they are solid and explosive. They have several weapons, four or five of which did not play, however the they still had their way with the defense. Miller looked like a different player. He's bigger, stronger, faster, and more confident than last season. The starting o-line played with confidence as well. I think that they will be much improved over last season. Knipp and Sloter both played well behind them. Ellis showed that he is dangerous anytime he has the ball in his hands. Defensively, I was impressed with the play of juco transfer Stone Kane at safety. That guy is a hitter. Overall, I was most impressed with the way the team interacted together, both on and off the field. These guys seem to be a single unit. The care about, and like one another. They have each others backs. This is how it should be. Team = family. Go Bears!
