Spring Practice Thread

McClintock will be the bowling ball, as will Sobomehin. Don't be surprised to see McCrae at RB either. On the other hand, he's not the big back like the other two.

Just came back from the spring practice. Most impressive player I saw was Jordan Senn. That young man is a monster. Glanville had his straw cowboy hat on and was quite engaged. Hope there is a good crowd at the spring game next week. Go Viks! /users/31/07/37/smiles/bdance2.gif

Long time reader first time poster. I kind of disagree with the comment on Jordan Senn. I understand that he is a good player for psu, but I don't consider him to be above average for the big sky. He does great at being an example and such especially in the classroom but on the field he lacks many of the needed factors to become a great player. From the website the best he has done for accolades is honorable mention for defense, and first team for special teams which means he just beat out some kickers and punters and I don't know if I consider them football players! Just kidding to all you kickers.
Go viks

Welcome to the site BigVik, Senn may not get the awards or the fame but he does what he needs to on the field, he is key to our D next season.

People have a keen ability to say things better than I do, which you just did. I guess more of the point that I was trying to convey was that many put seem to feel that he is an elite type player and IMO he is a good player at this level but I feel we have others that have potentially elite type talents and gifts above what he has, just many of them are at other positions e.g. Calrvalho, McClintock, some of the DL, Heerspink, and possibly guys like White.

Elite is a tuff word to say at the FCS level, so yeah I agree, Senn is a good player though.

I find the growing excitement around this team envigorating. Who'd have thought a team who played its spring game at a high school one year would be the talk of the town the next?

Agree, but I think there is a lot of work to do to keep this up. When talking to friends, there is an interest about PSU now, however there is an attitude that if isn't Pac-10 it's not totally legit. I disagree with this attitude, but it is out there. I think the hiring of Ferguson, for example, will be a start of a series of good decisions. /users/31/07/37/smiles/smily34.gif

I think part of the reason they did away with the "1-AA" banner is to improve their visibility in the country as they're now D1 FCS, not D1-AA, and the pac ten and rest are D1 BCS. Talk about stoooopid. It's like changing "Coke" to "Cola drink #1" and expecting the whole country to refer to it forever. And look out if you use the "1-AA" title on most boards (anygivensaturday.com is a good example). They'll jump all over you.

Sounds like McClintock may be the man in the backfield.

Good thing that Andrew Schantz doesn't require surgery.

For those of us who have been fans for a little while now,(and new fans also) we commonly complained that coach walsh recruited good talent and that the system/coaching style was not allowing us to reach that next level. What I want to know from the other fans is whether or not you think that just the new system will allow us to suceed right away with the talent that at one time most of us thought was quite good or whether or not we will need to wait for a little more depth at positions like receiver to be successful.

Time will tell with the coaching change to be honest. The 7-4 seasons need to turn into 8-3s to get to the playoffs and I think that is what a lot of folks want to see. The 8-3s and 9-2s have been expected and not reached with the last coaching staff.

That being said... I not real worried about depth at receiver, but I am worried about depth at the corner. However, it's a whole new ball game with the 3-4 coming to town with JG.

You touch on an interesting point. I think there is a slight risk of wasting a year of talent by having such dramatic system changes. I don't expect a completely smooth on field transition from Walsh to JG and Mouse. However, we have such a favorable schedule this year that the drawback of the learning curve should be outweighed by increase in home games and decrease in FBS games, resulting in a better record.

Don't get me wrong - hiring JG and Mouse was the right decision for a thousand different reasons, especially in the long run. I'm just saying that if Mariani's sole focus was to be as good as possible in 2007, then we probably should've kept Lupfer and just opened up the offense a little more. Again, I'm glad we didn't do that, but I think the transition creates a couple of short-term problems, like lack of depth at receiver.

Now that spring ball is over comes the dry time for news. We'll see if the enthusiasm can hold until the fall.

True. But new unis are coming soon. Plus new recruits and transfers. Should be some news here and there.

I think we got the right guys. When I heard these guys might be coming tears of joy. I thought I died and woke up in football heaven. Somebody who knows how to coach defense and somebody who knows how to coach offense. What more do you want? Experience? Turn around? I think Teri picked the right package. Look at Hawaii offensive records. Hawaii is not a big state. A lot of the local talent gets cherry picked and goes to stateside schools. Hey with this run 'n shoot system and working with what they have -> offensive records. So I'm looking to Coach Davis to rev PSU offense up fast. No more (?) how did we lose that game? PSU under Walsh has been an outstanding defense school. Coach Glanville knows defense. He is defense. Perfect combo. Maybe the Viks need to do a little JC magic ala Pokey. Remember Anthony Spears and Naperkowski? I think Jerry and Mouse are out there right now stocking the cupboard for this fall.
