Hell yes!

Go big or go home. This is exactly what our school needs.

Cozy. :)

Placing Peter W. Stott at the head of this committee was the catalytic move that brought this together. Kudos and praise to this inside organizing effort. I wish to express my deep gratitude.

I recommend, ask each PSU alumnus for $10 donation through TV and Radio commercials (air time donated for public good). Many will, of course, give more. Use this also as a means to compile a database of supportive alumni.

Awesome! Although, I'm hoping a new Stott Center would draw a fuller house.

No doubt. Especially for a team that has 125 points with just under 11 minutes to go in the 2nd half. ;-)

Neat video:

Very, very neat video. :) The curious embedded expressions "Gateway to Excellence" and "This is bigger than PSU" must well refer to the future of this public higher educational institution of ours, the institution representing Portland and its metro area.

"Gateway to Excellence Supporting Success in All Arenas" on one level obviously refers the multi-uses of the pavilion (athletic, cultural, community, academic). Athletically, the Viking Pavilion will enable Portland State to have quality facilities for FB (Jeld Wen Field), BBall (Viking Pavilion) and also for VBall (Stott Center), these sports accounting for approximately 95 percent of athletics revenue. Portland State has recruited well within the big sky conference having just the Stott Gym, but should soon be able to recruit even more excellently with the Viking Pavilion. This should mark a new era of excellence in Viking athletics that will transcend, I would expect, the programs into higher caliber affiliation. Beyond that, the significance of the pavilion's construction will be to symbolically usher in the coming new standard for the institution as a whole with, for example, the expanded engagement from the outside the university it will now be able to attract. Think also of the Collaborative Life Sciences Building that will be opening at about the same time http://www.ohsu.edu/blogs/news/2012/01/20/the-ohsuous-building-gets-an-updated-look/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"This is bigger than PSU" refers to dimensions beyond the university (city, state, nation, global). I would also expect it to involve plans of the Oregon University System which, of course, is bigger than PSU. This could well mean Rep. Mitch Greenlick's plan to merge OH&SU with PSU, creating a University of Oregon at Portland. This new hybrid institution would certainly be bigger than PSU. Because of the Viking ship portrayal in the pavilion, it appears the Viking motif and imagery will remain even though the institution should alter its name. A merger mandates a new name.

It will have to come from a couple of big donors, whoever they are. Not from student fees - they cut athletics this year. On another question - Crawford raises the question of parking, a big question. High rise Parking 1 is only two blocks from the proposed pavillion; they could tape off a section on game nights, the top floor at least which is usually clear at night. Maybe charge 3 bucks. But it's a problem. Build another parking structure? Where?

I'm still unhappy that sports takes precedence over the library. It's drastically underfunded and under-spaced. I see that they're moving more administrative offices into it and shoving another 40,000 books into storage. And don't give me more nonsense about data bases taking the place of books. This is supposed to be a research university!

You're right that the library needs additional funding and space, however, I don't think this is an instance of sports taking precedence over the library, or other University projects for that matter. The Stott Center was handed off to the Athletic Department since the Rec Center is in place, so any renovation plans lie in their court. Half of the money is coming from revenue bonds that wouldn't be possible without the additional revenue stream that is being generated with the renovation, as well as deferred maintenance (i.e. do nothing and you're need to dump money into the existing facility in the future). I rather like the fact that there are zero student fees being used for this. It remains to be seen if the Athletic Department can generate 22m in donations, but if they can pull this off as planned, more power to them.

Quite significant...

Whoever the anonymous donor is, thank you! :clap:

Director of Athletics Torre Chisholm was interviewed at halftime of the Carroll game. Chisholm said Portland State was ahead of schedule in the fundraising of Viking Pavillion with 8 million already committed! :D

Fantastic. It just goes to show that people will give money if you give them something to support.

I like the plan to get a bit over half from private donors and the rest from state bonds that the school could repay. This seems realistic.
