TAILGATING! What do you like to do?

Tailgating: Traditions, games, cooking, recipe's or questions. At the game or watching at home with your friends post it here.

Live South of Seattle and my Daughter started at EWU last Fall. My wife and I and her cousins drove over for the Southern Utah game and met up with 4 sets of parents of High School friends of my daughters. 5 O'clock kickoff time and we all met up in one of the lower parking lots and started tailgating at 10:00AM as we rolled into town. No motorhome for us, just what we can pack in the trunk. Folding canvas chairs, the ice chest and a cooler for drinks(more on that later) a nice small stainless kettle propane BBQ that was on our sailboat (sold) that clamped on the railing but just welded up a little stand for it that comes apart and store the whole thing in a small cardboard box. Pre cooked on the BBQ at home some chicken thighs and bacon and just heated them up at the game for some Southwest chicken bacon ranch sandwiches on some
toasted flat bread. Then a apple cobbler that I made at home in a foil tray that I just throw on the BBQ.
Some friends brought their corn hole boards and the girls set up a game table and oh yes and a football to throw around. I will add in some more recipes and other items later.
So chime in with what's your pregame activity, recipe or tailgating tips or questions that you have.

Wow...My best and only memory was the season opener in 2009 against Montana. Drove into the upper level early and met some great, unbelievable people from Cheney and Montana. A great magician came over and did some tricks, that I still can't figure out. We had a lot of adult beverages, great food, a lot of laughs and of course some bantering about who would win the game. After the game, there were still people there tailgating and having a blast. I have done a lot of tailgating in Texas, but this will always be my best experience ever. Yes, we won.
Second best was in Frisco, TX, for the National Championship. What a great year.

This whole post made me hungry.

tailgating is definitely one area of game day that had improved quite a bit. i remember that as recently as 5 or 6 years ago it was nothing like how it is now. Expanding the upper parkinglit was a great move. I think they could even expand it more.

Eaglesfootball,
Heard last year there are supposed to put in another 200 parking spaces this year, so far nothing going on.
Haven't inside the Athletic Building lately, lots of moving going on. The Coaches are going to be in the building presently, all others are going across the street into Cheney Hall, i.e. Dave Cook his assistant, Kyle Hoob, and all non Coaching individuals. Athletic Director Chaves will be staying in the building, Phase 1, and some others. Have a great Sunday. p.s. In Spokesman Review, the three finalist for EWU President is out, we have a Finalist that is currently our Provost Mr. Butler. He should know what we are pushing for in our
Athletic Program. I will keep my fingers crossed. Vic Wallace

I've tried a few of his recipe's with varied results but this one is a keeper. Cook it at the game or at home
could be served hot or room temp. but a great appetizer. Guys tip about adding shrimp or chicken or maybe even crab might make it even better! :thumb:

4 of us season tickets holders went in together on a tailgate spot this year so we can have a dedicated place to invite guests to join us... hoping we were able to secure a spot in the upper lot and can't wait to find out hopefully soon!

Last year each of the 4 was designated to bring a dish (drinks are always BYOB) ... favorites were enchiladas, bacon wrapped little smokies, and a breakfast theme for an early game. We were fortunate to join another tailgate group for a couple games by some westside friends and they brought fresh King Crab for all of us - warmed on the grill with melted butter to dip it in... messy but fabulous. Can't wait for August!!!

upper lot tailgating is the place to be...I remember the days of being one of the few in the paring lot before the game bbq on the grill...glad its become what it is today...My favorite was bacon wrapped pickles they were gone in no time. Will be doing brisket for the Sam Houston game...and will be in Seattle doing something from the sea !!! Another treat we are going to try this year..bacon wrapped onion rings..GO EAGS!!!!

We try a little bit of everything. Some hit, some miss. Here's Kalm's tailgate hall of fame dishes:

Clambake: The usual - layered clams, mussels, shrimp, andouille, smoke kielbasa, peppers, onions, corn, and spuds steamed in ale or wine with old bay seasoning in a double lobster pot with a spigot. Melt a compound roasted garlic shallot herb butter over the top, scoop into a bowl with more herb butter and nectar from the spigot.

Deep Fried Duck and Goose….enough said.

Grilled venison back straps…enough said.

Deep fried smelt…the first batch was a little undercooked but once we figured out how to get them crispy, those little bastards were delicious!

Grilled beef flap steak marinated in Hansen's papaya nectar, soy sauce, garlic, onions, sesame oil, and Melinda's habanero hot sauce. Sliced thin and made into tacos with pico and and cheese.

Huckleberry BBQ sauce basted baby backs.

Activities: washer board, football, hiking up the slope by the water tower to take in the view, not drinking whatever SE has in the milk jug.

Kalm, the huckleberry BBQ sounds good. I was in Seattle last weekend and bought a bottle of this

at the Fremont Sunday market straight from the guy who made it. Normally I BBQ ribs with a Texas rub (Rudy's) and Memphis sauce (Rendezvous), but he said it's awesome with a spicy rub.

Oh yeah, that sounds good. I'm more of a dry rub guy myself, but the sweetness works very well with pork.

It absolutely DOES NOT get any better than this!!

I rub the ribs with Kirkland Sweet Mesquite Seasoning, smoke in Green Mountain smoker for 5 hrs @ 180 deg. then turn heat down to 150 deg, smother with Old West or a couple more hours and .... heaven!
Enjoy a Bayren Brewing Dragons Breath or Dopplebock or better yet tip a few with friends while smoking and its the BEST
I'm drooling just think about it :)
note:
I am not waiting the 49 days until game day

Right on Claw! I will have to give it a try.
Going over to the wife's cousins (football buddies) along with the rest of the relative's for the annual
potluck and fireworks show on Lake Tapp's. Always lots of good food (too much) and a good time. Wife is trying out a new pea salad recipe, just know it has a lot of bacon in it.
It won't be long and it will be time to make some serious decisions about what to bring for the first tailgate of the year! Until then everybody have a FUN and SAFE Independence day where God has blessed this country with REAL FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!

TAILGATING! What do you like to do?

This year I'm putting a pair of one of these 'ole reliables on'

rednblack02.jpg

Grab one of these and attach to belt

And wear this up on top

Then I'm going to walk around to all your tailgates and sample the wares...

Last year for the S.Utah (our first game) we parked in lower lot 9 by the round music building. There was 3 car loads of us that parked next to the grass strip along Washington ave. and put up our tables and BBQ's, board games etc. and it worked out just fine for us. This year the wife and I are coming by ourselves and I was thinking about parking in the upper parking lot so we could mingle more. I was wondering is there any tailgating there or is it just for the R.V. people? Can you pay for two parking stalls and set up in the second one? Any help would be greatly appreciated since I don't(edit)want to drive over from the west side and figure it out game day.
Thanks!

Eagledawg,
I think you can get as many spaces you desire, and of course you will have to pay for them. Call Monday and talk to Kathy. 509-359-4339 - option 2, and Kath will pick up the phone if she is there. We will pick up our season tickets on Wednesday @ 5:30p.m., at Swinging Doors on West Francis. Look for an entry on 07/15/ @ 4:36 p.m., on our blog, Subject: RE: Two season tickets. entry by (tski60), great entry. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: Vic Wallace
