"Besides earning Big Sky Conference Player of the Week accolades for the third time this season and fourth time in his career, Jones was also recognized as the FCS national running back of the week by College Football Performance Awards."

What does everyone think TJ's chances are of winning the Payton this year? Missing what equates to 2+ games hurts, but he has had some monster games since he came back from the injury. His numbers would be bigger if he hadn't missed basically 9 qtrs of games. I know our main focus right now is beating SUU and ISU and making the play-offs, but I think TJ's the most explosive offensive player in FCS and he deserves a real shot at winning this award. Could he conceivably add enough in the stat lines these last 2 games to have a shot to win?

Stats YTD:

G Att Yds Yds/G Avg TD Rcv Yds TD
8 134 1078 134.8 8.0 10 16 290 2

Maybe not if you just compare him to other backs, but if they look at his over all production he stands a good chance.

If the committee took into account his time missed and what he's still accomplished, I think he would win it. I don't know if they will. He'll probably have to put up 200+ and 4 TDs in each of the last two games to win it.

It all depends on his offensive line. If they take this as their mission, and really focus the next two games on giving Tiawan some big holes to work with, Tiawan will do the rest, and I think the Payton award goes to TJ.

If he gets it, the OL should all get rings made up too. Tiawan is a rare talent but he goes nowhere without the bigs up front making it happen.

Go Eags!

When it comes to Taiwan, the O-Line is over-rated. He could do what he does with any O-Line in the BSC. However when it comes to pass protection, the O-Line is doing great. Taiwan is a freak.

Whats in your water dude? IF the guy knew how to follow his blocks and if he could read the zone blocking scheme a little better, he would be cranking out the yardage uncontested AND would not take the hits he has!!! He is an exceptional talent, but is still learning the art of reading his blocks! As to having 2 more monster games? ain't gonna happen, if we are fortunate enough to be up big like PSU, chances are good he plays just enough to ensure his health and the "W" !!! GOEAGS!

The way SUU and ISU are playing right now, I don't know that we'll be up big like we were against PSU. Then again, I expected a battle from PSU and that didn't happen either, so who knows.

And that's all I really care about, getting into the play-offs and getting a piece of the BSC title. Still think he's deserving, though.

Good thing is TJ's going to be around another year and if he doesn't win it this year should have a good shot his senior season. :D

Exactly !!!!:)

Taiwan Jones is an interesting discussion. He earns about a C- as a running back. He struggles to find holes and isn't that strong on conventional plays. However, his strength is that he earns an A+ as a playmaker. That's why we try so much misdirection, delayed draw, and swing plass-type plays to get him the ball in space. He's a murderer in open field, but not so good at getting between the guard and center.

Coincidentally, on that end around play where he went about 70 yards against Portland State--- you know the one where we zone blocked left and sent Taiwan about one step left and then cut back to the right to take the handoff-- I told my wife "Touchdown!" when he had just gotten possession. You could see the design of the play worked so well that anyone who could even potentially make a tackle would need to do it 30 yards later. The kid has SOOOO much speed when he breaks outside.

C- is a little harsh I think. I have never seen a more fluid runner in the Big Sky - the way he changes directions, his elusiveness - no one comes close. Yeah, he's not the strongest at running between the tackles, but I'll take his speed and play-making ability over any other back in the conference. The thing about Taiwan is that he could probably play like 3 or 4 different positions - he's that versatile. He may not have a shot at the next level as a RB, I don't know........but Slot receiver, special teams stand-out....Real good chance.

Yep.

Then we need to stop sending him up the middle and getting him killed. TJ deserves the Payton award, there isn't a back in FCS that is more deserving. Any team would trade their back for Taiwan. I just hope he stays one more year before going off to play on Sundays.

He will. I honestly don't see any scenario where he would benefit from declaring for the draft early. He still has some things to prove at the college level.

Some have postulated that he could be as high as a third rounder if he has a successful senior campaign.

Once you stop sending him in the middle defenses will quit respecting this game. We need to send TJ in there so that defenses have to respect it, just as we have to throw the deep ball so that we can continue to spread them out. I do feel we need to use Beumonte more, however, if every time we send TJ out there we run a counter or to the outside, it becomes much easier to defend for defenses. I agree with Dopa, he is a playmaker, ala Reggie Bush, he was best in the open field where he can make things happen. You can't get rid of the between the tackles game altogether though. Just my 2 cents

Sorry, I don't think we have the capability to embed youtube on here yet.

I think it's missing a few of his big runs......(UNC and PSU come to mind) but I like that it has the Nevada stuff in it and the play from the Cal game where he comes from downfield to catch the call DB. That was a really good display of his speed.

Nice.

This is an all new video through the ISU game.

Taiwan is a game changer for sure. I especially like how we mix it up for him. Sometimes he'll catch the ball with a full head of steam on the toss sweep, at other times we let the defense key on Mitchell until Taiwan takes the ball on a delayed hand off. Mix in Beaumonte, and we've got as good an RB combo as anyone. If you try to stop the run, Kaufman and Co. will eat you alive.
