Taylor and Thomson Rumors

Okay, I know I mentioned eGriz thinking that Thomson would transfer to UM after this season to reunite with Hauck...

But after UNLV fired their head coach, I read on Twitter that they will pursue Troy Taylor, and possibly Thomson as a package deal. Taylor becomes a MWC HC, Thomson follows because that was his choice out of HS and he never got to play (and he knows TT’s Offense). And Taylor quickly hands over the reigns to Kris Richardson and Dunniway....

My god.....

Um, Taylor is under contract. For 6 more seasons. There might be an early opt out -- none of us know all the minute details of his contract -- however I feel confident it's not after the 1st season or even the first few.

These other programs/universities can want Troy Taylor all they like. Unless Sac State is willing to let him go (why would they?) they seem to have complete control in that regard.

Now, Kevin Thomson could certainly transfer out as a Senior graduate, but IDK why on earth he'd want to go backward now. UNLV is in the past. He's in a good spot and good situation now.

UNLV may be an FBS program, but, let's be real, it's still UNLV. Not exactly Ohio State, Clemson or Alabama. They're not contending for a thing. Nor are they a super visible program. Doesn't seem like a great upward move for anybody, but what do I know.....

Agree with BHF on this one. UNLV seems like a side move just to make more money, which I don't think is TT's biggest motivator. Another downside is having to move your family to Vegas.

I think there is only one dream job for him - Cal. Hopefully that's a couple years off.

That’s why we need Wilcox to show continuous SLOW improvement - so far so good lol

The surest indicator of this is that he already took a large pay cut to come to SAC.

According to Bob Dunning of the Davis Enterprise:

Taylor made $612,500 at Utah in 2018, a figure that included an $87,500 bonus for a job well done.

https://www.davisenterprise.com/sports/bob-dunning-sac-state-football-contract-is-taylor-made/

If $$$ was a large factor, he wouldn't have taken the job in the first place. He could have stayed put or accepted an assistant position elsewhere. Someone else surely would have hired him.

Now, perhaps he took the pay cut in order to gain HC experience to then go elsewhere as a HC for an FBS program. I suppose it's possible.

But, I think it's also possible he really likes coaching with his longtime friends from the SAC area that all made their mark at Folsom HS together. Would he want to leave that situation? Would they ALL want to move away from the area should TT land a job elsewhere and want to take them with him?

IDK.

But I do know that TT is currently under contract. And unless there is a clause in the contract allowing him to leave for an FBS school should the opportunity arise (something I seriously doubt), I don't think we need to worry for at least another few seasons.

Please stop the wild theory nonsense. Wild theories are confined to Soo fan realignment nonsense.

The last time I went to EGiz for my breaking news was........Never

Go back and read the original articles on why Taylor came back home, and his Mom moved back to be around his family.

Hahaha. Totally agree about Sioux fan.

Didn’t read anything about Taylor’s mom, though. I’ll have to find that.

Andy Thompson jumping on one of the BSC HC openings that have just come up seems more likely.

N. Colo, Cal Poly, ....

Now that is something to be concerned about.

Poly would be a good gig. It'll be interesting to see who they hire. Walsh had a bunch of off the field issues in the recent past. I'm surprised he made it this long at CP.

UNC would be a disaster. UNC is where we were about 15+ years ago as far as budget, facilities, admin support is concerned. But they got a new President who was willing to front the cash to buy out the last 2 years of Collins' contract so who knows. Maybe they finally get serious about FB.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some coaches get hired away, but that is the sign of a successful program and that's just the way it goes. I'd be surprised to see Taylor leave sooner rather than later so yeah I'm not buying this conspiracy theory on him leaving now...especially to a dumpster fire like UNLV.

TT came home. He got the band back together and is killing it.

Hopefully having 20,000 screaming fans showed him and the staff a glimpse of 'what if'.
Are they more passionate about building a legacy here or chasing a dumpster fire in the desert?

Just look at Hauck as an example. Highly successful FCS HC who goes there and is steamrolled out of town a few years later. His career and pride thrown on the bone pile of other UNLV HC's.

He left a PAC12 job making close to what UNLV pays their HC. I am sure UNLV will up the $$ some, but the grass isnt always greener on the other side applies here. Hell there isnt any grass on that side.

I can see Andy leaving, but he spent 12yrs. in Flagstaff, if he was a job hopper, he would have left NAU earlier. I hope he sees that he and TT are a great working team and the two of them can be the next Nevada, Fresno or Boise State?

Now if Alabama came calling with a $10M offer, all bets are off.

Just ask all the families who are now having to scramble right before the holidays to find a job, uproot kids school, spouse change jobs, friends, family, etc. chasing the football HC dream. When a HC falls, so do the assistants. The assistants dont make as much $$, so they are the biggest to suffer.

Is it better to stay and build with a sure thing? Or is it advantageous to be a gypsy your life with no security?

Age old question of does money buy YOU happiness? And how do YOU define happiness?

TT seems to be an honorable, relationship person, so I cant see him stabbing everyone in the back when he just got here.

As far as this upcoming off-season is concerned, this is the only thing Hornets fan should be worried about. And some assistants a long side him.

The last thing we should worried about is content on that Egriz board. Griz fans have been under extra scrutiny for not knowing how to act by national FCS reporters lately, especially after the Montana State game. So don't waste your time

If I were Mark Orr, I would resign TT to a 10yr. deal with progressive increases in pay as the team is successful and draws more in attendance. Ive seen enough of TT, to give him a Florida State Bobby Bowden type of deal.
But then I am not Mr. Orr.

I don't know how the structure of State Budgeting works but with the Sac State's Athletic Funds Deficit, it's hard seeing the CSU board agreeing to something like that.

I've been researching and developing a response I'll post in the deficit thread at some point, but the tldr; version is basically it's not a big deal but it is something that needs to be addressed. If Nelsen/Orr wants/needs to give Taylor a new/better deal, there is nothing stopping them from getting it done.

Everyone just needs to relax and enjoy this amazing season and continue to support this program. Just know we've finally got the right leadership in place that is more than competent enough to handle these kinds of "problems".

Taylor doesn't seem like the type looking for a quick buck...so much potential to build a program with no expectations in a large media market. Stick around for a couple years and fix this thing long term with extended success and he'll have the pick of jobs on the West Coast. Plus a soft landing spot for any future tough times in his hometown where he'd be considered a legend.

BUT...if they did bolt, this one year would be totally worth it.

I still circle back to the fact that he’s under a 7 year contract. 6 years after this season concludes.

Even if he wanted to, he can’t leave unless Sac State is willing to allow him to leave. That’s the entire point of a contract.

Now, might there be a clause in his contract allowing an early out? We don’t know. But it’s doubtful.

There have been players/coaches that purposely went out of their way to force an organizations hand in releasing them, but Taylor doesn’t strike me as the type.

So, sans a clause or purposeful tank job, Taylor won’t be in position to dictate his future for 5-6 more seasons.

And hopefully he loves being in his hometown and coaching with close friends enough to not want to go elsewhere once his contract is expired.

No no. Taylor is not leaving. At least not to UNLV. They just got one of the hottest Coordinators in all of college football to take over the reigns. Someone who could have gone almost anywhere
