The PAC-MWC Dominoes Begin to Fall/Conference Realignment

Dr. Wood gave Griz fans/sometimes SAC-hating trolls a very long, interesting interview on their podcast yesterday. There is tons in here being discussed on X, etc. Everything from FBS to NIL to the stadium.

I guess my biggest takeaway is that he still is insistent there will be news on the FBS front in November.

"...new FBS conference" ??? new?

‘New’ to an existing FBS conference, or a creation of a ‘New’ FBS conference?

The WAC is the only grandfathered conference that was dormant FBS. Or did the Big West also have the FBS designation and they just lost all their FBS schools?

You could tell listening to this that Dr. Wood slipped in a couple things he wanted to say, the way he wanted to say it. Say what you will about his performative tactics, but I don't think he's dumb. He knew going on a Griz podcast would have reach, and it already has national FCS talking heads engaged. Was the "new" comment purposefully ambiguous? I would say 100% yes.

With no pen to paper as he says, he may have learned a lesson from the D1 council and subcommittee epic fails and doesn't want to give anything away to anyone. Do I think we are going to be the lynchpin in resurrecting a 3rd West Coast FBS conference (WAC or BW)? Probably not, but the possibility does add to the drama!

The one thing I take from Dr. Wood comments is the confidence. He has the info we don’t. I don’t think things would be said like this with only 2 games on the 2026 schedule unless he knows much more and just can’t let it out yet. I get the skepticism but I’m pulling for the Program. I get people don’t like his approach but at least there is a President that is going for it.

If the team was 4-1 like it should be, there wouldn't be so many complaints. That Cal Poly game broke a lot of us 😂.

Definitely broken. I would rather see them put the worlds tallest roller coaster at the site of current HS, and offer free rides every time we lose at the CE facility. At least the trip down would be fun.

Guess we won't be seeing you in the BW then

I'm guessing that it could be like a football only invite to something like Conference USA, which won't affect the Big West for the other sports. Conference USA seems to be an entry level destination for teams moving to FBS. While it stretches across the country from Texas to Florida it wouldn't be a deal breaker for football since they fly charter and there would only be 4-5 road games a year. Might actually help our recruiting exposing the program to a lot of talented potential recruits in the southwest and Florida.

Plus it would explain why there are only 2-3 opponents inked for ‘26, gotta keep it open for 8-9 conference games.

But will Sam Houston, Missouri State and W. Kentucky draw 40,000 fans to CE stadium? Exchange these three with the argument of ‘obscure Big Sky’ and ‘nothing in common’ opponents.

While I wouldn’t like being in Conference USA cause that doesn’t give the program games against California schools. I would be happy to be FBS with an option to schedule home and homes against some MWC and PAC-12 schools with Davis as the lone FCS. I think Wood Just needs something to come out of all this now though.
