The pressure is on this year

The potential for this year is huge, but it seems like we have a considerable amount of pressure going in to the season. Most pundits are picking us to be a 13 seed. It is often a little less pressure to picked as the second best team in the conference. We have a schedule that will provide some opportunities for the team to get some good experience against tournament caliber teams. We have good senior leadership and a great class of incoming freshman.

Being a Weber State fan in March has been difficult the last five years. We have had so much potential, but have caught some bad breaks along the way. The CIT was fun, but we need to go to the big dance. We have the depth that most mid majors envy.

Its time for the student body to pack the house. It would be great to fill the place like we did against ECU every night. NOW IS THE TIME!

Amen webergrad02, we have probably one of the deepest teams in the conference and probably even mid-major teams as well. I do agree that the CIT was a good learning experience for the younger guys but I am tied of watching other teams make the dance when we should be that team. Let's get the whole city of Ogden fired up for a great year of Weber Hoops, and i would say the student body as well but we all know those leaders only care about sitting in their office and collecting their free schooling. We are Weber and I am damn proud of it. Go Wildcats!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pressure to win is a great thing and what will make the program better!

Real pressure is when you're trying to break a long losing streak and you have to convince the fans that they should attend your games.

Weber State is well positioned for the future and will be in the NCAA's for many years to come. The coaches have built a top notch program and the quality of recruits will improve. Our schedule needs to get ramped up to prepare the team for the rigors of tournament ball in March.

Coach Rahe and staff are on the verge of something special......

Awesome posts!! Great discussion. I agree that this year's edition of the Weber State Wildcats, has the potential of being something special. Coming off a 30 win season with the bulk of the team coming back, why shouldn't we all be excited? Yes, I worry about the loss of outside production and dependability Scotty B provided, and the leadership of Mook, but both players have guys who can produce coming in to start in their positions. Gelaun has a lot of upside and is poised for a breakout season. He has Lillardfied his workout and is taking the naysayers on. His game will be much improved. And who has been there with him the entire time?? Joel Bolomboy!! That kid is going to be something special this season. He will be a double double machine.

Agreed with all the comments. Weber is in a great position to become something more than a one season wonder. The Cats are poised to be winners for years to come. The level of talent can't be matched in the Sky, hell only BYU can match the Cats depth in the state and thats only if all of their recent recruits stay. Rahe has it going on right now in Ogden Utah. As Karl would say...we are living La Vida Loca!!

I think a lot hinges on Wheelwright. If he shows the potential that we saw at the end of his freshman year he and Berry can be a great duo at the 2-3. Combine that with a vet at point who can knock down the 3, and Tresnak and Bolomboy down low and I can see why expectations are so high. I am interested to see what kind of low post game Bolomboy is developing. Otis was so quick down low that most teams had no one who could guard him one on one.
Classes have started at Weber, so basketball season can't be too far away ...

We have been very blessed to have Rahe as our coach for many years. I do hope he stays for a long long time but his good work is not going unnoticed. Our site has an article from ESPN on Rahe being one of the toughest to recruit against. http://www.weberstatesports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8600&ATCLID=209113894" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We have got some solid players and are poised for something big. Wheels and Bolomboy have been working with Beckner and he was the one who helped dame to the next level. If he gets 2 players to step it up, they alone could have a big year especially with wheels speed and joel is just a freak of nature.

Is it november yet!

We all know how good our starters are, but Rahe also has a lot of talent on the bench with Williams, Hill, Hajek, Fuller, Fulton, Senglin and Gittens. Not to mention we have walkons who had scholarships to play basketball and are instead paying their way to play at Weber. Senglin is a guy who can play the 1 or 2 and we will see him a lot. We know Hajek will play a lot, and another guy who will really surprise the Cats is Hill. He is a 3/4 guy who has the posts moves that Mook had. Not to mention that Fuller, Fulton, and Gittens are all guys who can play significant mins for the Cats. Where are we weak? There isn't enough mins in a basketball game to play all of our talent. Yep, that is how good and deep we are.

I like the pressure. This team can handle it and will only make them better.

Face it, the pressure is on every year.
Have a great season, more of the same or better is expected.
Have an off season, huge pressure to do better.
Have a couple of off seasons, coaches start looking over their shoulders.

It's that way in every level of sports.

Let's just go out, cheer on the Wildcats and expect ( and hope for ) the best

I disagree.
We have a target on our backs this year. We gathered some attention with the CIT. We developed the NBA ROY. We are getting attention from recruits that we would never had the chance to get in the past. Yet we haven't been to the big dance since 2007. We have been at the door step of something special for five years. It is time to break through. When was the last time we had a team that was a legit 10 guys deep? When was last time we didn't have fill a hole in the roster with a JC guy? I think the stakes are higher this year.

I spoke with someone from marketing (yes, the athletic dept has a marketing dept) and he was telling me that this year's team could be one of the best the University has ever had. Might have just been his opinion, but there is a lot of excitement surrounding this team. One of the best ever, or not, with UM losing what they lost, anything less than conference and conference tournament championships would be a big disappointment. Coach Rahe has to get that conference tournament monkey off his back.

What did the marketing department say they were going to do to get fans in the seat to support this team. Probably absolute nothing since that is what they are known for. You can talk to them as much as you want but we all know when in comes to the marketing department it is :blah: :blah: :blah: or :dead:

Season Tickets continue to climb. The biggest issue is getting students to show up and use their sections. That would be kinda nice to see...a full student section. With 5400 season tkts, about 2500 walk ups and 1500 students that would be a pretty awesome stadium experience.

On a HUGE side note. Let's not forget who has built this success...RANDY RAHE!!

 Totally Agreed!!

It sometimes seems there are some fans who are pyning for the return of the Cravens years. Ugh!

Has anything really even changed? Don't the Cats usually have a target on their backs? Weber has been the marked team for the past 4 or 5 years. Even when the Cats weren't as good, teams looked forward to playing Weber. The players on this team expect to get the very best from every team we play in conference and they usually do. We want their best. We want to beat their best efforts. I don't see why this season is any different from any other. Yes, we have a talented and deep team. Best in school history?? Well, not quite, but they could be. From what I remember, Weber has ended the season nationally ranked a handful of times. I'm pretty sure those teams were better. Does this team have the talent and potential to end the season nationally ranked?? I think so. We will see. All I know is that this team is special and we are fortunate to have Rahe here at Weber State leading our program. Can't wait until November!!

The only thing I miss about Joe was the dance. Too bad that happened pre youtube and Facebook. That thing would have gone viral quick. Talk about caving to pressure. How did Cravens screw up the 2000 season with Gill & Arcenuex as seniors?

I can remember climbing as high as 11th or 13th in the national poles. I also remember being ranked in the top 20 post season poles a couple of times. So yes, this team has that potential, It's just a matter of putting it all together now. A win at UCLA and again at YBU would put us into the lime light and get the thing started. You also need to make some noise at the big dance. Just getting there isn't enough. :thumb: :thumb:

First of all where in the world did you find that Cravens Gif?? I about died laughing!

Second lets face it. There will be no marketing. I have been on campus all week and not a single thing about the home football game saturday. you'd think they would want to start off the season strong and act like they care as the marketing slowly dwindles but nope nothing at all. Does anyone know what the ASSistant athletic director of marketing operations Ron Goch does? Clearly nothing. Anyone talk with him? I know jerry is a busy man but someones needs to know that nothing is going on. No marketing means no fans, no fans is no money, no money.. well you get the picture. Someone with some power has to care somewhere.
end rant

There may have not been any marketing on campus, but there have been two ads each day in the sports section of the Standard for the past week.

You talkin' basketball or football marketing?! This suddenly goes from one to the other, but oh well doesn't matter as for student body marketing, it needs enhanced...but I'll switch it back to basketball: this upcoming season is not the same for Rahe's Wildcats as far as the outside view, for the first time in national post-season play Rahe's Wildcats really shined! Several of us fans (at times, naysayers) were impressed with the coaching and player's performances against some tuff CIT tourney teams. Weber State made some big respect for itself & the BSC in places around the country. 'Oldrunner' is right, in the big dance or whatever, you've got to make some noise once you're there. The BSC rep in the NCAA tourney hasn't done that for several years (including Weber's last venture vs. UCLA). With last year's success in the CIT & the Weber coaching staff's success with recruiting, that target on the Wildcats back has grown bigger & brighter! :twocents:
