January 26, 2008 Natalie Doma, the greatest women’s basketball player in Big Sky Conference history

She was one of the very top players for sure, but… no. Her defense was just too weak to make her #1 over Shannon Cate or Brenda Souther (if we're including the MWAC years) or possibly even Hollie Tyler.
Not even close -- Doma was the all-time leading scorer AND rebounder in Big Sky history when she retired.

Yes, I'm aware of that. Shannon Cate was the only full-fledged All-American in league history, though, and was named the Big Sky's #1 all-time women's athlete in their 25th. anniversary thing a few years ago (Doma was #5). Souther & Tyler also had vastly superior block numbers.

January 27, 1979 – In Idaho State’s 101-51 demolition of Colorado College the team set the program record with an astonishing 102 rebounds in the game! The game was played at Colorado Springs. Charly Bond, one of the all-time great Bengal players was a member of that squad.

January 28, 2012 – At Weber State it looked like the Bengals were going to run away and get an easy win over their longtime rivals. The Wildcats though had other ideas and almost pulled off a huge upset. ISU led 37-19 at the half but actually trailed by two with :16 seconds left. Chelsea Pickering then hit a layup in the lane to tie it at 52 all. Weber State was then called for an inbound violation when Shawnte Taylor crossed over the baseline before letting go of the ball. ISU got it back and saw Lindsey Reed get free along the baseline for a layup with :11 seconds left that would prove to be the difference in the 54-52 win.

January 29, 2004 Laraine Skow scored a career high 25 points as ISU beat Eastern Washington 92-61 at Reed Gym. Skow shot 9 of 12 from the field, 3 of 5 from three point range and 4 for 4 from the line. She also had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. She became the seventh different ISU player to have a game with 20 or more points that season!

January 30, 2014 – It was a testament to brilliant strategy and flawless execution. Sacramento State with their high powered, shoot first and ask questions later offense came in to Reed Gym and figured to run out the Bengals like they had been doing to many Big Sky teams. But the Bengals had a plan… don’t shoot until there were :10 seconds or less on the shot clock, pound the boards and play excellent defense. The plan worked to perfection. ISU held the Hornets way under their scoring average and got the 62-53 win. They held Sac State to 16 per cent shooting in the second half and 27 per cent for the game. The plan though angered the home fans who didn’t realize what was going on and started vocally questioning ISU when they were refusing to take wide open lay up’s that the Hornets were deliberately giving them in order to get the ball back.

January 31, 1991 – In a home game against the Nevada Wolfpack, ISU’s Stacey Mortensen had one of the all-time highest scoring games in program history. Mortensen pumped in 34 points as the Bengals blew out Nevada 77-60.

February 1, 2014 – ISU beat No. Arizona 82-72 as five players scored in double figures led by Lindsey Reed with 23 at Reed Gym. It marked the 94th win for Seton Sobolewski making him the all-time winningest coach in program history.

February 2, 2012 – It was one of the few bumps on the road to a championship but on this night at Reed Gym, ISU was simply done in by an incredible performance. Montana State’s Katie Bussey scored 41 points as the Bobcats came back from 16 points down to win in overtime 79-67. Bussey was unconscious hitting 11 of 23 shots, four from three point range. She also was 15 of 18 from the line. That same night in men’s play Damian Lillard scored 40 to mark the only time in Big Sky basketball history there were two players scoring 40 or more points on the same day.

PBP

February 3, 2007 – In a game against Sacramento State at the Hornet’s Nest, Natalie Doma of ISU showed just how dominant she could be. Doma scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds in only 30 minutes as the Bengals won going away 83-59. Doma shot 10 of 16 from the floor and 10 for 10 from the free throw line.

PBP

February 5, 2000 – In a 59-48 win over No. Arizona at Holt Arena, ISU would go 19 for 19 from the free throw line setting the school mark. Angela Munger went 10 for 10 from the line with Mandi Carver chipping in by going 6 for 6. The other free throws were made by Camber Perrigan and Ashley Toner.

PBP

February 6, 1999 – It was just another great moment in her all-conference season. Playing at home against Montana State, Theresa Mallak dropped in 31 points as the Bengals beat the Bobcats 60-51 before 743 fans. That season Mallak would make first team all-conference averaging 11.4 points on the season. She’d be second in the league in assists, fifth in steals and eighth in scoring.

PBP

February 7, 2009 – It turned out to be the best night in Michelle Grohs career and the ISU Bengals really needed it. Grohs scored 27 points in ISU’s close 63-58 win over No. Colorado at Reed Gym. The Salmon, Idaho native went 10 of 18 from the field, 3 of 8 from three point range and 4 of 5 from the free throw line. She added 10 rebounds, two assists and a block and played all 40 minutes of the ballgame. She'd finish her ISU career with 1,005 points and a first team All-Conference selection.

February 9, 2013 Cydney Horton wasn’t just a shot blocker; (although she was very good at that) there were times when she used her athletic ability and was a very good offensive threat. At the Centrum in Cedar City, Horton just about won the game over Southern Utah by herself. She poured in 28 points in the Bengals 60-50 victory over the Thunderbirds. That was her career high. Horton was unstoppable going 11 of 14 from the floor and 6 of 7 from the line. She also had four rebounds, a block and two steals on the night. That was good enough for her to win the Big Sky Player of the Week Award.

PBP

February 10, 1985 – The Bengals took care of Portland State 74-60 at Holt Arena thanks in large part to the performance of Lori Zaragoza. She had 18 points and 21 rebounds in the game. The 21 rebounds is still one of the highest individual performances in program history. Alison Verona added 19 points.

PBP

February 14, 1991 – On Valentine’s Day, ISU’s Greta Garver tied the school record when she grabbed eight steals in a single game. It happened in a 90-63 win over No. Arizona in Pocatello. That year she’d set the ISU record with 90 steals in a season breaking the record she set the year before when she had 89 of them. She left the program holding the school record with 227 steals.

PBP

February 15, 1982 – Idaho State tied the school record when they dropped 108 points in a 108-66 win in Pocatello over Southern Utah. One of the members of that team was Shelley Hand who scored 1,056 points and had 528 rebounds in her career.

PBP

February 16, 2001 – Reed Gym was packed with over 27 hundred fans as on this night Idaho State took down perennial power Montana 56-53. It was the first time in program history the Bengals would sweep the Grizzlies. They beat them in Missoula about a month earlier as well. Mandi Carver was unstoppable leading ISU with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Idaho State was down seven points at halftime before coming up big in the final 20 minutes. ISU would go unbeaten in conference play that year to make their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament that March.

PBP

February 17, 1979 – Idaho State was scheduled to play Western Wyoming at home on this night but the game never took place. It is officially listed in the record book as a forfeit to ISU. That’s the only forfeit win in program history. The Bengals that year would go 17-10.

PBP

February 18, 2010 – This is why you never say a game is over with a lot of time left. At Reed Gym, ISU staged one of the greatest comebacks in program history by roaring back to beat Weber State 79-75 in overtime. The Bengals trailed by 15 points with nine minutes left, and then outscored the Wildcats 27-12 to take the game to the extra period. The Bengals hit six straight free throws in the final :27 seconds to win the game. Andrea Videbeck had 20 points, Chelsea Pickering 17 and Ash Vella scored 15 in the stirring victory.
