This Is Not Good News For Any EWU Program

The hard truth is that the school needs to work harder for a online presence. Too many kids are going to George Washington online school and other online because of their situations and such. I would bet if you looked at other schools in our state there is a decline as well. Students like the online option and from what I can tell EWU doesn't offer much or advertise it.

I'd agree 100%. If you aren't at the forefront of online education, than you're playing catch-up. However, even playing catch-up is better than ignoring the trend altogether.

Declining enrollment is a serious issue, and needs to be rectified immediately. If the president can't solve that most critical issue, it makes the contract extension that much more shocking.

I don't know what to make of this, but the president seems to have a hard time making a decision and seeing it through to conclusion. It seems like every decision becomes decision by committee, which extends the timeline substantially. An effective leader takes charge, and good administration will bring the plan to fruition. Everything going on at Eastern seems to take far longer than it should (stadium expansion included, and maybe the best possible example).

The decision has been made on our stadium expansion. Deflect blame elsewhere and make it look like athletics is being supported by attending events. Blame others when little or no fund raising happens. Now we can add "blame the internet" to the narrative, that will help the administration continue with their non-campaign to make EWU what it could be.

College presidents are judged by enrollment numbers. CWU has figured this out and we haven't. They hired a competent leader and we didn't. Next thing we will hear is climate change is the culprit. This has just become absurd and I feel bad for Lynn but she took this challenge on. She of course has our full support but we need to be realistic. This president will not make anything significant happen on campus. It's been five years and I challenge anyone to post her biggest accomnplishment since she arrived in 2014. Before anyone mentions the Science Building that was in motion long before she arrived five years ago. Dr. A made that happen.

I hope we can get our act together with everything. We seem to have lost all of our momentum as a university. Is it time for a change? Good leadership goes a long ways.....

Declining enrollment is a huge red flag that things are not working quite right at EWU right now, and that falls right at the feet of the president. Universities and community colleges always struggle the most with enrollment when the economy is good, but this should be balanced out with growing population in eastern Washington and the whole state in general. 2000 fewer students is a huge hit. I hope the university board is taking this seriously and holding ole Mary accountable.

1) Who hires the President? 2) Who holds the President accountable? 3) Who gives extentions to Presidents contract? 4) Who fires the President? *I hope it's not the same group (the governing body) who hires that also fires...seems like if it is they would admit perhaps their hire wasn't a good one therefore hesitant to fire (maybe even give a contract extention to convince their hire was indeed a good one). just curious

Board of Trustees runs EWU. Members appointed by Governor confirmed by legislature. There is where the problem lies. Our BOT is weak and the reasons are sadly political.

Not much any of us can do about that. We just need to support our coaches and Lynn and wait this out. Leaders come and go but poor leaders on our campus have squelched the incredible momentum we had in January 2011. None of those leaders worked or currently work in athletics. We can't allow the divide & conquer tactics we've seen used prevail. EWU Athletics is Division 1 and excellence is hard work. Since the days of Dick Zornes all the way to Lynn we've seen excellence so let's get ready for UW. Go Eagles!

IMHO, non-STEM universities like EWU have a problem in our digital economy. Schools that offer a wide range of Science, Technology, Engineering & Math degrees have the advantage.

Univ of Mont is going through the same issues:

Our son just graduated from Mont State who is on the opposite trajectory:
https://www.montana.edu/news/18011/msu-sets-fall-enrollment-record-sees-increases-in-retention-and-graduation-rates

In recent years, EWU has added STEM-related programs which over time will draw students over time. However, with UW and WSU in our state, EWU is relegated to competing over students considering Western Washington Univ. Again, IMHO.....

My hopes are: 1. That there will be no reduction in football staff positions (operating budgets-ticket prices increased) and 2. that planned/committed capitol projects will not be affected especially since those funds would be generated elsewhere. 'bout time for you experts on this site to seriously start talking 2019 winning EWU football. GO EAGS!

Student fees are a big part of athletic funding so less students less does affect athletics.
