Thoughts after 2 weeks of the Season

Ok, I'm having football withdrawls since I have nothing to look forward to this week since the Eags are on a bye week, thus, this thread.

Offensively, I think the "O" is just starting to click. You could see Padron starting to feel more comfortable in the 4th quarter against the cougs, but they definitely have some room to improve. Our Offensive line has been much improved, what a difference a year makes. I have been surprised with how well our running game has been. Talley has done a great job and Forte is playing well. Once Bronson is healthy, it will be nice to have a beast run up the middle and then counter with our two quicker backs. We need the run game to at least be semi consistent this year so that the defense doesn't drop 7 or 8 into coverage all day and it has been the first 2 weeks. Brandon Kaufman has been the best player on the field in both weeks. He is a legitimate NFL receiver with his size and speed. Edwards hasn't started the year off as well as he did last year, but I think a lot of that is because right now Edwards is receiving a lot of double coverage and Kaufman isn't, I think that is due to Edwards having the monster year last year and Kaufman being out with injury. I expect that to change as the season progresses, I think Kauf will still have his big plays, but Edwards will see a lot more big plays as well. I hope Herd is ok, I heard the concussion is not too bad, but you never want to see that happen. Both Clark and Mitchell are great receivers if Herd does miss any playing time. Padron is going to be a Great Qb here. He has thrown a couple poor balls so far, but he has also made some great plays as well. He will just get better as the year goes on. I also think we will see a little bit more of Adams as a change of pace once we get in to conference play. He will also see a lot of minutes in some games that we are dominating (and we will be up big in some games later this year). All in all the offense still has room to prove, and considering we are one play away from being 2-0 against the FBS, thats pretty damn good.

I never thought I would say this, but our defense this year has outshined our offense. I can't say enough about our defense, they have been fantastic. Our D-Line gets a ton of pressure on the QB and has been able to stop the run. Pulu may not have the stats this year, but he is an absolute beast up front and nobody has been able to move him this year, he will absolutely dominate the big sky. Our LB's have made some big plays as well and have really contained both teams we have played. I can't say enough about our secondary, they dominated Idaho, and held Wazzu to very minimal yards compared to what they expect to put up every year. TJ Lee absolutely dominated an all american FBS receiver on Saturday, I wouldn't be surprised if TJ plays on Sundays, he is a stud. I could say great things about every player starting on the Defense, they have been fantastic, and it has been a night and day difference from last year. If the D continues to play they way they have, we will have a great shot to make a DEEP playoff run this year.

All in all we can't complain with a 1-1 record considering we have played 2 FBS teams. I hate having a bye week this early in the season, but with our schedule this year, it may be the best thing for us. We have a chance to heal up, the offense has an extra week to begin to gel, and we can focus 100% on starting the conference season out on the right foot. Weber is pretty solid this year, but we are going to be rested going down there, and they are coming off 2 body bag FBS games and they host Mcneese this week, we should be able to jump all over them. MSU is good this year, but I don't think they are great, we do play in Bozeman, but they are decimated with injuries on defense this year and their offensive line is very green, I think we should be able to go in and win in Bozeman just like they were able to beat us in Cheney last year. I think the game against the Griz on 9/29 could be for the Big Sky Championship. Honestly, I think we absolutely dominate that game. The Griz secondary has not been great this year and I think we will eat them alive. I respect the Griz, but I think that game isn't close in a couple weeks and I think it propels us to a BSC championship and a good seed in the playoffs.

I can't wait for the season to continue, I think we are going to see some GREAT things, just wish we had another game this week!

Agree about Pulu. The turning point of the coug game was when Pulu went out with cramps. After that Tuel had all the time in the world.

I'm just so glad we have this oddly timed bye week right now. It should give us time to get off the emotional roller coaster, get right and get healthy. Plus it's 2 weeks for Padron and co. to get in sync. Scary to think that our offense wasnt on the same page but still racked up 500+ yds in a PAC 12 stadium.

We could have something really special on our hands here. Can't wait to put it to Weber then come home for a thrilling home opener, under the lights with a boss new scoreboard to boot. It's a great day to be an Eagle!!!

Formereag,
I don't drink, however, I normally mingle with the crowds and have fun with the unstable ones.   The were prepping the pipes at practice today, so they can start doing some painting.

SE 174, Come out and get some pictures of what is completed, and put here, so our FANS can see what is happening. It is starting to look great what is going up so far. Vic

Vic, I would if I still lived in Cheney and had my camera. I wasn't using it much and money was tight a little while back so I sold it. :|

If I get out that way before the Griz game, I'll take some pics with my phone.

SE 174,
I will try to make some with my phone camera, and try to get them to you. I am terrible when it comes to taking pictures. Let me know when you are ready to go out, I can invite you to ride with us. I am out there at least 3 days a week if not more. I live in Gonzga Area. Hope you can come by and ride with us, you are always welcome. Vic

Disagree. First, we dropped a guy off the line and went with a three man front like BYU did to WSU the week before. Then, often we only rushed two while one of the three linemen didn't rush but rather shadowed the QB. Go watch the game again... You'll also see that with Pulu out, WSU scored ZERO points.

Where can the game be rewatched?

Yeah, the loss of Pulu would really hurt, but in this particular game, not so much. WSU can't run against pretty much any front, so being down a man didn't really hurt too much. Honestly, I didn't even notice he was out because our defense sure didn't seem to suffer.

WSU is a bit like EWU was last year, totally inept at running even when the other team is dropping 8- or in some cases even 9- into coverage.

On my DVR. I've watched it twice since Pullman. Come on over!

 Rediculous, delusional, wishful thinking to say the least!!! Can't say it surprises me though.

Of course Griz fans think they'll dominate that game.. I'd expect nothing less from them. That's what happens when you beat a middle of the road FCS team at home, hold close to APP ST on the road and ten schedule another average team at home the following week.

Did I say anything about dominate? :? Reading comprehension failure on your part. I fully expect it to be a great game, like it always is. I am pointing out that it's comical that your fans seem to think they will all of a sudden just dominate the Griz, when you never have before  Like I said before, delusional, wishful thinking, when the reality is that it will come down to the wire like it always does. Additionally, do your homework on liberty, and you will find that they are no fluff team. Last season they lost to both James Madison and Lehigh by a combined 6 points. This season they have been plagued by turnovers and injuries in their first two losses (similar to the Eagles their first three games last season). They lost by three to Wake Forest in week one, and actually led in the 4th quarter before throwing a pick 6. Then, they dominated the stats against Norfolk State a week ago, however, committed several key turnovers. As for the Griz/App game,,,that one went down to the last play just like the last time we played them, however, the Griz committed 3 turnovers and App committed none. Whats telling, is that despite committing 3 turnovers against a top ten team, the Griz still had an opportunity to win at the end of the game. You keep telling yourself that youl simply DOMINATE the Griz when you play them. Hopefully your players are thinking the same thing, , I love that everyone thinks the Griz are down all of a sudden....More fuel... Oh, and for the record, the Eags lost in 2011 to that fluff team USD that the Griz played week one, so do you really have room to talk? Carry on...

Definitely down to the wire. I hate the Griz more than most, but you're right on the money here. With few exceptions (@ Montana in 2005, in Cheney in 2006 for example), the games have always come down to a handfull of plays, interesting calls or plain bad bounces. Both teams have been on the receiving end of some bad luck in different years, causing the game to end just out of reach. That's what makes the UM/EWU games so much fun. No matter where the teams stand talent wise, they end up being great battles.
If you could only hear the trash talking that flies back and forth all game long... of course, some of the Griz would make themselves easy fodder, like Kroy Biermann back in the day and his ludicrous red contacts...lol. Can't wait to get back out to Cheney for the game!

I have nothing but respect for the Griz but I don't think you beat us at home. Eastern will be rested and our passing attack will absolutely take advantage of, what I believe is one of your weaknesses, the Griz secondary. Our defense is much improved and I don't see the Griz keeping pace with our offense. We will put up points against you guys and I don't see the Griz keeping up.

We get an even bigger edge because it is our home opener and we should have a record number of students and fans at the game. On top of that, we have an unusual bye this week, giving our players some early season rest and Padron an extra week to fit into this offense.

You can argue all you want about the past, but the past is the past, we don't care. I am basing predictions on this year alone. The griz are good, no doubt, and I think they will be really good by the end of the year, but I don't think you beat us and I do think Eastern wins this one comfortably, no, not by 40, but I wouldn't be surprised if its by 10-14.

Speaking of delusional, just look at the App/Griz predictions on your own board...what, 10% of griz fans predicted a loss, just the same here, you think Eastern is going to say, I think we "just get by the Griz".

Who cares about South Dakota last year, did you see who they lost in the offseason? Thats like us saying, you had your asses handed to you by Sac State last year and we beat them later in the year, so we are better. C'mon man.

The griz are not the same team they were last year and neither is Eastern. It will be a great game and we are all looking forward to it.

I only mention USD, because someone decided to comment on our scheduling garbage teams, when in fact Eastern plays many of those same teams. You are right, the Griz are not the same as last year. But like always, they are the prototypical Griz. Huge O-line (avg height & weight 6'4-6'5, 306lbs). Plethora of offensive weapons, including all starting running backs from last season, one of which has 391 all purpose yards in 2 games . A tough, hard hitting D. Our front 7 is better than average, and actually might be one of our best ever. While our secondary is certainly a suspect position, we just graduated the best cornerback in school history, as well as 3 other dam good seniors. They are young, and will grow better with each game, and with each new challenge. I am under no illusions, and know for certain that this will be a knock-down-drag-out like it always is between two quality FCS programs.

USD had 14 seniors last year, thus they only returned 8 starters this year. VERY green USD team this year. We also played them in their dome and had the defending NC target on our back, the Griz got them in WA-Griz and struggled with them. Not exactly apples to apples.

FWIW, I know a Griz fan who thinks EWU will win handily. Until our passing game is clicking, I don't think that happens. I agree, it should be a close game, but I'd be fairly surprised if we lost.
