Tim Walsh

Something I hadn't thought about before today and reading some posts on OregonLive. I think they've been holding the Athletic Director job open for him. As far as I know, there has not been a process to search for an AD.

The problem with that is that we will need a new head coach. When there is a coaching change, the next few years SUCK. Look at Colorado. New head coach, bad year.

Walsh is a great recruiter, and always gets us great players. I just don't think he can get us to the playoffs. We've had winning seasons the past few years, but have not made the playoffs because of a few close road loses.

I don't think Al Borges is an option. He is about the best offensive coordinator in the country. His next step will be a head coach for a big conference school. We are just too fishing with too small a rod to catch that whale.

Too many BSC road losses in the last few years for Walsh. Tim is a great guy and does wonderful things, but what we need is to bring home the BSC title, or at least make the playoffs. We need a good 'game' coach. A coach like that would have pulled a win out of the game today.

Would Walsh be willing to take over the AD position? He might look at it as a demotion if he is forced out of the head coach position.

I have no evidence for the following hunch, just a sinking feeling.

See Chris Ault, U of Nevada. Got AD position after being head coach. Actually kept both for a little while. Decided to hire a new coach. Ended up firing coach and reinstating himself. REPEAT PROCESS.

Well, there is a little evidence to this hunch... Portland State continually makes the cost-conscious choice. Walsh in both positions wouldn't surprise me... and that would gravely grow the pit in my tummy.

I think it would be a bad idea for Walsh to take over the AD postion because it would leave to much for the athletic department to transition at this point, especially if Walsh was AD. Can you imagine him trying to make the decision who would be the best fit for the coaching position just after he had been running it for the last 14 years???

I think the athletic department needs to hire an AD like Burman so that they can continue to grow the Viking product that has been established within the last 2-3 years!! After hiring the new AD I think it would be his/her decision to make the choice if Walsh is good enough to take the Vikings Football program to the next level if he has not already done so.

I to feel that Walsh has some lack there of but I still have faith in him!! We can all say well I would have done things differently but we aren't him out on the field day after day trying to inspire these young gentlement to become what we want them to become and we aren't him who has to make the tough decisions when it comes to decide who plays. Its like playing poker some times you have to risk big to win big and some times when your risk big you loose big!!!

I say we keep the faith because when it comes down to it we really dont have any say in the matter no matter how much we talk about how we would like things better.

All we can do is keep our Viking pride and support the program the best we can not matter what outcome!!!

I know that this weekend is going to be a team we haven't seen in a while because the guys who have been injure for way to long have actually had a full weeks practive of live football and I know that after last weekends lackluster shananagans they will be ready to nock some heads off!!!! I feel bad for the Bengals because It just might turn out to be a really devistating blow to them with the Vikings putting up some serious numbers that the BSC has not seen since the UNC game!!!

GO VIKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KEEP THE FAITH IN THE VIKS!!!!!

Tim Walsh becomes Cal Poly's head coach

http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=123145862229994800

Tim Walsh, former Portland State football coach, is the new head coach at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Walsh recently left Army, where he was offensive coordinator on the staff of former Portlander Stan Brock. Army relieved Brock of his head-coaching duties after two seasons.

Walsh replaces Rich Ellerson, who has become the head coach at Army.

Cal Poly was ranked No. 3 in the nation in 2008 before losing to Weber State in the first round of the national playoffs.

Walsh coached PSU from 1993 through 2006, overseeing the Vikings’ development from a Division II program to a Division I-AA power. He was 90-68 record (.570) during his 14 years there and took four teams to the NCAA playoffs. In 18 years as a collegiate head coach (four at Sonoma State University), Walsh’s teams were 117-82 (.588).

An interesting development. Does he intend to stick with their option attack? I just don't buy that he's fully converted to that offensive mindset.

I've been arguing for a PSU-Cal Poly game for years, but now I really want to see it on the schedule. Let's get a home and home, Chisholm!

Also confirmed in the SLO paper...

It'll be interesting to see if he sticks with the option attack. They already have the personnel for it. He did spend one year coaching it at Army. He could hire an OC to run it. Cal-Poly SLO was very successful with it. If I were him, I would consider it very much.

I think Cal-Poly SLO should be on our schedule every year like Cal Davis. The travel is not too crazy and we get recruiting exposure in California.

Anyone placing bets on when Greg Lupfer gets named DC?

I question whether this was the right move for a program attempting to challenge seriously for a championship. Walsh seemed to prove that he couldn't get that done at PSU, even with very solid teams. Granted, he didn't have the kind of support Glanville does. What do other people think? Is he going to get it done at Poly?

I guess one question is how would Walsh have done with more support.

His last year he was 7-4 with three FBS games on the schedule.

Walsh: 7-4 his last year.

Glanville: 3-8 and 4-7.

Is Glanville getting it done here? At this point, I dream of a 7-4 season.

I hadn't thought about the Lupfer thing. I bet you are right, especially since he got let go at Toledo. I still hope he makes it back here someday.

From the Cal Poly official athletic site:

Tim Walsh Hired as 16th Head Football Coach at Cal Poly

Tim Walsh will be making $190K per year. That's a helluva lot more than he ever made at PSU and it is more than Glanville's salary which I think is about $160K.

Good for him. You're always more likely to make the big bucks when the school has wealthy alumni, and unfortunately PSU isn't yet in that position.

Cal Poly counts Spanos as an alum, right? Is that the individual to whom you refer?

I was referring to the median income of those who graduate from a top tech school to that of PSU grads. If they don't make a hell of a lot more I'd be shocked.
