Time for Changes

For what it's worth, former Hornet Fred Otis Amey posted this on his Facebook last night:

"Sac State Football...needs Sac State Football Alumni coaching. It's time for a new regime of coaches that will motivate, inspire, play the BEST players, bring former players back, & WIN. EVERY player I've spoken to over the last 6 years has only had negative things to say about the program & a lot of players have flat out QUIT & lost their love for the game. Way too much talent & young lives being played with..."

And this is my fear when it comes time for Wanless to make a change. This “hire a former Hornet” mentality will cause this program to remain stuck in the mud. I’m not saying we shouldn’t hire a Hornet alum, I’m just saying this mentality will prevent us from bringing in the most capable and qualified HC to take this program to new levels. Hornet football history isn’t exactly filled with success, so I’m not sure what being a Hornet alum brings to the table aside form just checking off a box and bringing in familiarity for fellow alumni to have a big Hornet football circle jerk.

I realize what I just posted opens the door for folks to take shots at me but so be it. You don’t reach new heights by narrowing your selection process to “alums only”. Wanless will need to open up a nationwide search and hire the most capable HC period. If that so happens to be a Hornet football alum then great, added bonus. If not then that’s just how the chips fall. God I knew there would be someone with this sort of a narrow-minded outcry, and sadly I know this mentality will likely skew the HC search and hire. :ohno:

I about threw up in my mouth when i read this. Insanity=doing same thing over and over and expecting different results. :loser:

My answer: Take the top 20 D2 programs performing at a consisently top 15 level and recruit one of these coaches. Worst 2 decisions: JC head coach and FBS unproven assistant.

SD wholeheartedly agree with you.

No Hornet alum, I agree, should be a highly successful DII HC or smaller market FCS coach like EWU's Dave Baldwin, S. Oregon coach or Ed Lamb at SUU.

Sperbeck and Co. has gotta go.

Does any one know how many years remain on sperbeck's contract??
Sperbeck’s first season was 2007. I want to say his initial contract was a 4 year deal and I think it was extended 3 years. That would put this year as being his last. I do not know if this is accurate or if his extension was more than a 3 year deal (or if he has since received another extension). No one has posted any details on his contract situation. Unfortunately a change won’t be made until his contract expires so all this bitching and moaning from us fans might be all for naught.

Wanless just conducted a nation-wide search form women’s hoops HC; no reason he couldn’t do the same for football.

I'm in agreement; it's time for a change... I'm sure there's some truth to FOA's claims, but I don't agree with his final assessment.

Bring on Craig Howard (SOU) and his OC. He's an Oregon native, but has shown he'll move for the best job. The only assistants worth keeping may be Laveroni (OL), Gigli (DL) and Ingram (RB).

Yes, there are a few former Hornets I'd love to contact. But if your hearts are so dead set against it, how about a couple of Mikes? Mike Canales or Mike Van Diest....

One thing I think we should consider is not to rush to judgment on Amey's comments. I don't think he's necessarily saying that the HEAD COACH should have a Sac background. What he IS saying, though, is that the STAFF should have a Hornet background to re-instill pride in our legacy. The actual IDENTITY of those staff members is not the issue. So if we can find assistants who know and understand our legacy and can infuse that into our recruits, but have more experience than those that have been proposed, fine. The job will still get done.

The concern here is that we have brought in outsiders, perhaps with an attitude of "needing new blood," and they have ruined what we have had.

Just my thoughts. You're welcome to pick them apart. That's the joy of "good radio," so to speak.

;-)

Huh?

What "legacy" was there to "ruin" prior to Sperbecks hire?

BTW the current staff has 2 Hornet alums on board so does that mean there should be even more alums on the staff? Please tell me what being an alum brings to the table and how that would help this program reach new heights. I'll wait. :coffee:

Bob Stitt of Colorado School of Mines!
John Wristen of CSU (Colo St), Pueblo!

Those two should be looked at. Wristen ought be be pursued by Wanless. Since thunderwolve football was reinstated in 2008, the t-wolves have had five consecutive winning seasons (including their current 6-0 record). Only losing season was the first season.

2013 - 6-0 (with 5 games left in the reg DII season, the t-wolves have already reached a winning record)
2012 - 12-1
2011 - 11-1
2010 - 9-2
2009 - 7-4
2008 - 4-6

Also, Wristen has connections to the Golden State. He was a coordinator & position coach at UCLA. Above all, he helped build a program from the bottom up and into a consistent winner. At this moment, Sac St needs to be built from the bottom up. If, by any chance, you're reading this Dir. Wanless, please contact Wristen's people!

To Sperbeck’s credit a foundation has been laid, and if a new coach were to come in next season the cupboard will be pretty well stocked. As much as I want to see a change, I won’t ignore the fact that Sperbeck has had some notable accomplishments that no other Hornet football HC can claim. This program is a far cry from the one Sperbeck took over 7 years ago. What we need is a coach that can bring consistent success, not the intermittent success followed by crushing disappointment that has been Sperbeck’s calling card for the past couple of seasons.

Think the first year coach of UC Davis is the highest paid BSC coach. Thought I read somewhere that he makes $230,000.00 or $235,000.00 per year.
So guess that would make the Sac State HC the 2nd highest paid coach at $207,000.00.
Certainly way above pay of all other BSC head coaches.

KADEEZY'S QUOTE OF THE YEAR:

Also, remember guys, 150K in Idaho or Montana is comparatively much more than 205K is in California.

Wristen was my top pick for coach and who i was thinking of when I made my post. SD, classic quote :notworthy:

Gould's base salary is $235,000 a year and also includes incentives if we were to win the conference, go to the playoffs, etc.

According to the Bee's State Worker Database for 2012;

Sperbeck made $206,062 plus $15,000 as a special consultant

Walsh of Cal Poly made $195,258

Gould made $256, 213 as a Cal Assistant. Even if he took a $36,000 cut at Davis, his wife made $199,831 as a manager in the Cal Athletic Department so they might be able to survive.

I would expect the California coaches to be paid more due to the cost of living. It would be interesting to see what the other BSC coaches make.
