Transfer Portal Targets **speculative**

Thought this might be a fun purely speculative thread moving into uncertain future.

Every once in a while I pull up the transfer portal on 247... Not sure how Eastern approaches this, would assume that the only transfers the Eagles look at were at one time recruited but with the slew of coaching turnover the past year, maintaining continuity like that is nigh on impossible... Always looking at positions which are historically difficult to recruit. One the best recently has been Ely Doyle... . Suppose what the University has to offer is a factor as well as location. Don't know if Eastern could pull from the SE or even mid west.

Always thinking DL, DB, RB and LB...

Didn't find a lot of info on this player who recently entered the portal but always looking for capable DL

Kelsen Hennessy - Good frame

Dennis Merrit 2.0? Stable of backs is good. Jackson, Lewis and Perreiah. Probably not a "need" pick.

Christian Galvan RB (UW)

I haven't heard what Best's attitude toward transfers is but IMO it is a necessary evil nowadays. We know some kids will transfer out so EWU needs to replace with the portal. Some schools in the Big Sky are shopping it pretty hard.
On average how many players are in the portal at any given time?

Exactly, MSU, Weber and Montana had better than 5 transfers starting, especially on defense. They may not be significantly better than a player that is developed (aka RS So or Jr) but they do have the advantage of having competed against generally better talent at the school they are now transferring from IMO.

Number of players varies by position. You also have to select 2021 or 2022. https://247sports.com/Season/2022-Football/TransferPortal/?positionkey=61

Ojoh makes a big 3rd down tackle against Bama... Looks like he has gotten his man size.. Will never understand his choice but hope he shines on national TV today.

Would love to pick up a LB/DE type to add to the defensive talent. A lot of unknowns with the LB's for next season.

Chris Ojoh is back in the portal after NMSU HC is fired. I'd have a serious discussion with him if I was Eastern (not knowing all the factors of why he left in the first place)

Laiatu Latu - big LB just hit the portal from UW

Danny Lockhart - USC mid level LB with 4 to play... the kind of guy Eag's usually recruit.

Correct me if I'm wrong--- we're in a new NCAA world now--- but you get one "free" transfer, right? If you do it twice, you still have to sit a year, correct? So that might bode well, because coming back to Eastern would still be a drop-down (in affiliation only, I mean we're talking about New Mexico State), so he wouldn't need to sit a year here, but would sit a year moving to a bigger school.

FWIW, my hunch is Ojoh wanted a bigger school and likely wouldn't be interested in coming back. I don't think he left on bad terms, though.

Wasn't sure about "how he left". It would be good if he could transfer back and play right away. He's a mercenary now so assume the biggest team with the most visibility probably makes sense to him and he held his own in those games against Bama and UK. Some of this may be strictly academic focus too. Not sure if he'd completed a degree and the graduate program just wasn't the fit he needed. No idea. Had to be a thrill to get out there and measure yourself against teams like Bama. He had 13 tackles and a FF against Bama... As long as there were no issues, I'd have him back in a heart beat though. :thumb:

Just saw that Jerry Kill was going to be the new coach at NMSU... That guy can coach some defense. Know he had had some serious health issues. He was born in Cheney..... KS.

Jerry Kill is a dead man walking...been gurneyed off during a game like 5-6 times for siezers beat kidney cancer and survived being best buddies with Gary Patterson(ex TCU coach). Outlive us all probably (or me at least).

He sure did struggle there for awhile. I had a viscerally negative reaction to the Percy picture from The Green Mile... Most would cross the street to break his neck. Malkovich says it best...

I realize this is tongue-in-cheek, but not a big fan of "dead man walking." (Obviously tempered by you saying hell outlive us all... lol) The guy has a legit medical condition that was tough to diagnose, and he had his diagnosis messed up several times and got recommended treatments that were ineffective. The cancer issue was totally separate. Bottom line is he's a great coach with a medical issue. Honestly, he's MUCH better than anyone else that would even be slightly interested in New Mexico State. That was as big of a home run hire as a school like that could make.

Don't know what's going on at UNLV but they had 3 LB's go to the portal recently. This one appears to be the cream of that crop.

edit** This guy has been offered by Texas & Michigan St. and is a physical animal like we've never seen on the Red. He entered the portal after collecting 119 tackles, 11.5 TFL, 6.5 sacks and 2 FF in 2021.
