Troubling news just keeps coming

Gist of this story: Coach gets popped twice by one of his players, kid ejected, team abandons game due to lack of players, coach resigns.

There’s two other high schools in Portland that are also barely making numbers in the sport. These stories are well known by now.

This is Portland State’s base, core, whatever you want to call it. Within the city limits, you have active boosters at Lincoln and barely anyone who cares past that.

Out on the west side, it’s Nike country and they make the trip south on Saturdays. They’re the ones who pay $100+ a pop while hardly thinking about it. There’s still support for football out there... and the Blazers, and the Timbers. Washington County is ridiculously more diverse than when I was going to school, BTW.

I say this because Portland State obviously needs a new fan base for football. I don’t see a place from which it originates. Of course, even if there is such a place, the school has to have resources to “recruit” it. Do you see that happening?

No @pounder, I don't. The general public, our city officials, Merritt Paulson, the administration at PSU, and our student body all appear to have little interest in keeping Viking football alive. It is sad that a once proud program looks to be going the way of baseball and wrestling.

That's a sad situation at Madison. Jackson was my wrestling and football coach for a year in middle school. Super nice guy.

Each school in the conference seems to have their own little area where they can rely on getting recruits except for Sacramento and Portland, where it seems everyone jumps in to "steal" them. Seattle seems to be another hotbed for Big Sky recruits as well. I know Weber was pretty upset when we nabbed Kuresa (although I don't think the Wildcats would have played him at QB). What you are saying could potentially be a conference problem, not just a PSU problem. Maybe what we could do is aim for the smaller school standouts (4A and below perhaps).

Parents reflect on the pressure and desire they feel to enroll their boys in tackle football, despite the risk of brain injury: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/21/reader-center/youth-football-head-injuries-cte.html

Ken Goe of OLive posted a couple more links to head injuries in football in his Issues and Answers segment.

I thought I'd post them before Alan does so he can start on this week's rant early. :D
