Troy Taylor and Jason Garrett Finalists for Stanford Job

Many are speculating this is Taylor’s job and an announcement will be made whenever our playoff run ends.

Hard to be mad at this - just hope our staff isn’t completely gutted and we can keep some continuity with personnel, staff, etc. No offense to our players, but transferring IN to Stanford is a tall task - hopefully that keeps Skattebo from running for 300 yards on us in the opener @Stanford next season.

Wonderful distraction for the team as we head into our quarterfinal game tomorrow.

As far as what Stanford does, no brainer decision on this choice.

If true, it's clear that Coach Taylor isn't the old school type (of his generation) to never consider joining a heated rival.

I mean, as a guy that has stated many times over that money isn't a motivating factor and things like living in SAC and working with his friends in a situation he likes being very important to him AND also heavily considering that he's a CAL Bears all-time great -- I am a bit surprised he's considering this direction.

Don't get me wrong, if accepting the Stanford job = BLISS to him (to use his own word) more power to him. Do what makes you happy.

I'm just surprised, that's all.

I figured he'd hang around until either the CAL job eventually opened up again or possibly accept some other non-Stanford PAC-12 or West Coast-based gig at some point (if he did indeed leave). Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Stanford is a great academic school with deep pockets. I get that. But, again, with money not being a factor and his connection to CAL and that academic requirements (for recruiting) at Stanford are likely even stricter than CAL -- I'm surprised.

I know Jim Harbaugh and David Shaw both did well there for a spell, but the odds aren't great to duplicate and keep it going. I think Harbaugh got out before he eventually would have hit a downturn and Shaw did experience regression.

I guess we'll see when/if it happens.

As far as Sac State's future goes, is it possible Kris Richardson transitions from Assistant HC to HC with much of the staff remaining in place (like the transition at Folsom when TT left) or do you think most the staff including Richardson leave with Taylor?

I could see both scenarios, as Taylor would have aided his friend in landing his own HC gig at a D1 program. I kinda figured that was the idea behind the Assistant HC role in the first place.

If Richardson is indeed inline to succeed Taylor, the BIG question is how much of the staff will head to Palo Alto and how many will stay put.

Lastly, the worst part of all this is possibly losing our 3 star QB recruit and other committed recruits mere weeks before official signing day. Hopefully the Hornets continue to win and make it past December 21st.

He gone.
From a fans perspective, this sucks royally. It will gut the coaching staff as I am sure he will bring some of them with him. Right at the time for recruiting and we play Stanford first game next year. How ironic to get his first win against his old team.

Would be nice to find a coach, like SDSU Stiegelmeier or Sam Houston's K.C. Keeler, who wants to build something long-term and not just as a quick stepping stone.

You cant fault the guy, but did it really benefit the program having him here only to rip everything out on the way down the road? All the momentum on building the program, just flew west or is retiring.

He would be leaving the program in a better place than anyone has ever left any other program, damn near. I can’t think of any other coach at any level to inherit an 0-8 conference record and flip it to a 23-1 conference record (could easily be 24-0 w/o a Kevin Thomson injury).

For what it’s worth, Keeler was out looking for jobs this off-season…

Also, if we can keep either Richardson or Thompson as HC, and Fresques possibly as OC with playcalling duties, that would be a win.

We’ll see what happens, but no matter what, 2019-present will probably never be topped, even if Taylor stayed.

Was thinking the exact same thing, but plenty of time to speculate once the other shoe finally drops. The dooming needs to stop and that was a ridiculous take, GCM. These years under Taylor have been the best ever for Hornet football.

Looks like it will be Troy. Great for him - never thought a Sac State coach would ever jump to a P5, let alone stanford. He’s that special though.

Agreed. I think most of us were hoping Taylor was that kind of guy.

Bob Ladouceur turned down offers from Bill Walsh to go to Stanford in order to remain at De La Salle and build something more special — which he certainly did. He accomplished a lot more at that HS than any college coach that was just another link in a long chain started by someone else.

I don’t pretend to know Troy Taylor’s long terms goals and aspirations, but if money and prestige really weren’t factors then he’s leaving a situation that was not only more challenging but could eventually be more rewarding.

Building a program up from scratch into something much much bigger >>>>>>> than being the next link in a long chain for a program that has a low ceiling in terms of competing for championships.

Much thanks to Garrett for keeping quiet until the Hornets season is over and/or an official announcement is made. Douchebag.

It will be very interesting to see how the team responds tonight with all of this coaching news swirling around. Hopefully they can stay focused on the task ahead. So far this season, they have been able to not worry about anything other than the game they are playing. They had every opportunity at Portland to look ahead, or use the short week as an excuse and still came out and dominated. I think this week will be the same.

I’m weirdly not worried about this impacting them. I could even see Taylor being honest with the team if he thought it would help them play better. Everyone at the end of the day still looking to put their best foot forward on tape, whether you’re a coach with a new audience, thinking of transferring, or a senior possibly facing the last game of your life.

#StingersUp and dominate the Word Birds.

Wow. Disappointing if this ends being the case but hard to fault him for such a big opportunity. He's been such a transformational presence for Hornet football. The next chapter will be interesting to see how it unfolds. Keeping my fingers crossed until the seemingly inevitable becomes official.

Until then, cheers to hopefully a 2nd playoff win tonight!

An email went out to key boosters today, Taylor will be announced after our game this weekend, and introduced on the Farm next week.

No word on whether he will see the playoff run through or not if we win tonight.

It’s one thing for coaches to opt to leave. But to do all this during a playoff run when the season is still going on?

Not just in this situation, but I’ve never understood why these things can’t wait until the end of the season. Stanford’s season is OVER. And while recruiting is a big deal — do the Stanford’s, ASU’s, and UW’s of the world want their coaches leaving before their seasons are over and they are about to play some big playoff games??

There should be a rule — written or unwritten — that no coaching moves are permitted to occur until the season is over. It’d be good for all schools/programs and better for the game.

The fact that the player portal opens while the season is ongoing is utterly ridiculous too. A moratorium should be in place until AFTER January 8th and 9th for all announcements and transactions.

This $#/t is ridiculous.

Seriously, did everyone actually think this day would never come? Everyone has a price. This is the business of coaching in the D1 game and it is what it is.

Everyone stop dooming, take a breath, gear up and sit back and enjoy the program that Taylor has built for us over these past 4 years. Plenty of time to comment and speculate once the official announcement is made.

I believe best case scenario is an in house hire that will allow for a seamless transition. Any delay in announcing should have a significant impact on recruiting. Lots of potential long term impacts to a 'lost' incoming class.

Agreed. I was trying to hold off on speculation until after the announcement but we have a championship caliber coaching staff, depending on who Taylor takes with him, we need not go far to find a replacement. This happening now also means our proven leadership in Nelsen and Orr will be making the call, and they've hit homerun after homerun with coaching hires. I get the desire to want to keep Taylor here forever, but that was never going to happen.

We've got a quarterfinal playoff game tonight. Let's enjoy every minute of it and hope this ride continues for another week. No need for dooming.

It's still not official yet. Let's wait until after tonight. It's a whole lot harder for a coach to leave in the middle of the playoffs than it is to leave before a bowl game....

As a moderator championing “free speech” and just recently acknowledging that this is a place for know-it-alls to express opinions and vent — you should be the last person to discourage any type of discourse.

Hornets fan have a right to be discouraged and upset. After decades of suckitude some people were drawn back in the past few years and had built up a lot of hope. Taylor — and likely a lot more staff — leaving is naturally going to cause a lot of grief and insecurity. Let the people express it.

While I’ve expressed many of my thoughts about Coach Taylor’s decision, I will also say that I’ll be much less concerned IF Richardson and Fresques both remain to the take over the Hornets program.

If only one of Richardson and Fresques remains, I’ll still be somewhat optimistic. But if both those guys leave with Taylor and Orr is back to square one hiring a new coach that’ll bring their own system needing their own type of players — I’ll definitely be pessimistic about the future. Just being honest.
