UC Davis

Well the guys did it. And they answered some of my questions.
1. half pads did work, at least for Rubes he looked way more mobile then he has in a while. And he had to be the o-line is still a problem.

2. speaking of the o-line I know why that young man isn't starting. He isn't ready missed several blocks and you could see the RBs trying to stay away from his side/hole. Not that the rest of them were much better. and before anybody says it yes we did look better as the game went on. That was only because we were the team that got to wear down a defense for a change not because we played better.

3. the RB situation is going to be just like the QB situation was last year,Loyalty to a senior. This year it may at least cost Boyer his job.

4. The redshirt they burned was a waste of time he only plays TE in the heavy package. Ironic that he isn't a TE or heavy they have at least three other players that could do that I would be on fire pissed off if that was my son.

In closing I am very glad for our young men that they won. I don't think even a sweep of the bottom feeders of the Big Sky should save Collins's job though. At the very least he should be given an ultimatum the whole offensive staff or you and the whole staff.

I for one, am very proud of the Bears and the character they displayed Saturday night. They played so much better than they had in the past couple of weeks. Rubes looked like a different guy than the previous weekend. His confidence is back, and with that, follows the confidence of the entire offensive unit. The oline protected him much better, so he wasn't taking those nasty hits that he has taken in the previous weeks. For the first time all season (that I can remember), he was appreciative of the oline in his post-game comments. Rubes, Holland, Graham, and Cartigena all rushed the ball effectively as well. On defense, though battered by the injury bug, our guys stepped up and got the job done when they had to. Hats off to Kerr for getting those young guys ready to play. Go Bears!!!

Burning the kids red shirt was ridiculous, they could have easily used one of the other linemen that are eligible this year and saved the kids RS.

Feel bad for the kid, only gets two to zero plays a game and seems to always jump or hold... really isn't ready yet.

In reality they have 2 to 3 other big tight ends they could use one being Monson (who I think has been hurt most of the season), Backes (Who has been underutilized seems to get plays here and there, Remember seeing his High school film and the kid is a damn good blocker), and Rhodes who played a lot this weekend mostly to block (Huge body, would be good for GL and power packages, GREAT blocker)

Overall a great team win, was worried for a second towards the end there but the interception sealed it up.

Who has burned their redshirt?

I believe he is referring to Zach Wilkinson #97 out of Canada. They burned his red shirt early in the season when Monson was 1st out with injury and Backes was out for a couple weeks as well. Has not played more than a couple plays in a game and I believe there have been a few where he did not get a snap. Really a crappy deal for him and very poor player management by the coaches.

Completely agree with BigBearFan76 and HelpOurBears regarding the TEs. The players and the position as a whole is completely under utilized on this team. Which is particularly perplexing because based on last season, Spring camp and Fall camp I expected it to be a big piece of the game plan and potentially a strength of the team.

Vander Velde has very good hands, decent speed, tall and athletic, but rarely sees the ball this season. He is a good, but not outstanding, blocker. Missed a big block that got Rubes crushed this week. Should have a lot more targets and catches.

Monson has been out since the UNI game with a shoulder injury. Returned this last week, but did not see him play any. Very good blocker, average receiver. Not a lot of speed or athleticism. Be interesting to see if they utilize him some more the final two games.

Backes is big, athletic and fast (fastest TE if I recall the Quad-a-thon results correctly) He is a strong blocker and is also a very good receiver with speed , but he has been used sporadically this season. Rarely dropped a ball in the practices I watched and has consistently blocked well when playing this fall. Has missed a couple blocks like any young guy would. Just needs more game experience. Have seen him wide open a few times, but for whatever reason the QB has not seen him or thrown to him.

Rhodes is a big and strong TE who has been moved around a lot this year. Played a couple games as FB. He has had some impressive blocks and even made a couple of catches. He's aggressive, but overall I haven't been impressed with him. Misses as many blocks as he makes (especially noticeable in this game) and is not nearly as athletic or as fast as I hoped. With his size, lack of speed and athletic ability I think he is better suited as a guard or fullback.

Finally there is Samad Hinds - A tall, fast and athletic WR they have been running as a TE some. Not sure if they are going to permanently try to convert him or not. Seems to primarily play in passing situations and has a couple of nice catches this season. He is an excellent receiver, but a seriously poor blocker. Particularly if you watch him try to take on a DE or LB. I have seen him pick up a couple of nice down field blocks on DBs.

But like I said, the position is completely under untilized. Boyer has too much love for the 4 wide spread and not enough sense to take advantage of the mismatches he could create with the 2 TE sets.

If we look at TE and O-line the former being explained very well just before this post. we have two of the most important positions on the field. Both protect the QB and make the running game flow. These two positions will have no depth of any kind. At least not with any experience. We have only used 6 linemen this year. If you look at almost any D1 program in a rebuilding stage none of them only go with one set. You cant get kids experience by watching a game instead of playing. Also there is to much nonsense going on. As for the heavy TE on short yardage I actually was referring to #52 who practiced there almost all of spring and most of fall. This group of linemen did cut down the sacks but they gave up 6 tfls to on of the worst defenses in the Big Sky. And Rubes did a great job getting out of trouble on his own a lot. The RBs also seem to be afraid to go inside and push a lot of plays outside. There are 17 linemen on the roster, now understanding you need 5 for the scout team that leaves 12 that should be getting playing time. Collins seem to be confidant that he is going nowhere so don't you think its time we get the TEs and O-line some work. It isn't like having two or three linemen go down in one game has never happened. What do we do then have our one backup play three positions. These two positions are truly the only positions on this team that we will go into next year with no experience on their depth.

On a more positive note, congrats to Rubes for garnering the Big Sky offensive player of the week. He's very much deserving of this award. His leadership and toughness proved to be the difference in the game. Congrats, Sean!!!

Rubes is our guy and needs to be treated at as such. This team has weapons, and when the ball is in their hands, the Bears stand a much better chance at getting a W. Sean "Put the Team on Your Back" Rubes and Dimitri Stimphil are the best players on this team, hands down and I challenge anyone to tell me otherwise. Those two players need to have the ball in their hands all game long. When Greg Peterson (OC in 2012) was putting the ball in Jace Davis' hands in 2012 (the Top WR in the conference that year) all game long he was a player that every opposing was worried about, which opened up all kinds of opportunities for the Bears on offense (the most productive year in DI history for UNC). The bears are lucky enough to have a QB-WR duo on our hands that we need to be taking advantage. Sure the Oline is struggling put with Dimitri's quickness and Rubes game savy there is no reason why DIMITRI STIMPHIL can't be the most dominant receiver in the Big Sky. Whether is be on the bubble screen making people miss, or on the deep ball, Stimphil is the biggest offensive threat on this team and needs the ball 20+ times a game. Deep ball, short passes, fly screens, or set up screens.... I DON"T CARE!! PUT THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF OUR BEST PLAYERS!!!!!!

I agree with the guy above, college football, and even more so college football on this level is all about playmakers and if you have a guy or two that can bust a big play that's usually the difference.
