UIW

My grades for the game:

Offense: C
QB: C
RBs: C+
WRs: C
Line: B- (Mainly because they didn't give up and sacks).

Defense: B
Line: B
LBs: B
DBs: C

Special Teams: B-
Punting: C
Kicking: B
Coverage: C+

All in all, not a terrible performance but not enough big plays and scoring opportunities generated by the offense. Inconsistent play in the passing game and not enough push generated by O Line to get a serious rushing game going.

Probably the biggest surprise in this game was that after the 1st quarter, the defense looked like they can at least play competently. The line looks decent to me and the LBs seem to be an upgrade from what we saw last year. Secondary play was very inconsistent and missed some reads that led to big plays.

Special teams were ok minus inconsistent punting. Two punted out of bounds but then a couple of boomers, one of which was downed inside the oppositions 5 yard line.

On offense, the biggest standout to me was Yetts catching passes out of the backfield and running those couple of big options plays for TD's.

On defense, Jackson had a couple of big plays out of the DE position and had a good game from what I saw, as did most of the D line.

Not sure what, if any, changes need to be made on offense. We weren't penalized much and minus the fumble which cost us a chance to win the game, we didn't really make a ton of mental mistakes that I saw.

I can agree with most of this. UIW was obviously a better team but I thought the defense did their part and frankly exceeded my expectations for a season opener. Not having Wells in the secondary was noticeable. Maybe there's some hope for that group?

As far as the offense goes, I really don't know what can be done. Branch is a big target that needs to figure out how to use his size to his advantage. Of course the QB needs to get him the ball. I don't think Miles Williams had a single catch-not sure where he was. This isn't an exceedingly talented receiver group. Didn't think the line played badly but as you mentioned they didn't generate much space when we ran the ball.

It's about what I expected, TBH. I don't think we played poorly, but also don't think UIW is all that great, either. The Southland is historically overrated in my opinion, but going down there and playing in that heat couldn't have been easy either.

Well stated. The defense obviously made some adjustments and for the most part shut them down second half. It's hard to be angry about the way they played. I share your concerns about the offense: just doesn't seem like there's many playmakers to get the ball to, minus Yetts who I thought played well.

All valid points.
