UNBELIEVABLE

What a joke. I guess barely winning and benching your starters to lose games results in a new five year deal. This AD is a joke of a leader for the athletic department and the coach just received confirmation that his brand of losing is acceptable. Shame on you UNC.

As a past player, and one who played under Collins. I hate this decision and I don't know If I can go back to watch a game with him at the helm. A lot of my buddies who played under him feel similar. This is beyond me....

Interesting. I hope he is able to surround himself with a better staff. I hope he gets to be a better recruiter.

Wow!
I have previously posted that "I'm out", and must admit that my loyalty to our program outweighed my disdain for much of what has transpired......and that disdain had little to do with wins and losses. It would be dishonest to say"I'm out".....I realize that it's not in my fiber......I wish I could. I've also come to realize that I cannot begin to wrap my feeble (masters degree educated) mind around the thought processes behind the decisions made by the people that we trust to advance our university toward prominence in all areas. I fail understand the current definition of integrity in the UNC dictionary. Things have become sad. ....just sad
And yes. ...I am a Bear for Life...

UNC made a big mistake in this decision. After 5 more years of 5 or fewer wins, fewer and fewer fans in the stands and no interest in the program they will wonder what happened. This looks like a decision a NAIA program would make where the students don't care about the wins or losses of their athletic department and have no interest in any of their schools' athletic programs. Many of the coaches in these schools have their jobs for life, win or lose. Maybe this is the new direction of UNC. A future member of some NAIA conference.

Wow, just wow. It's not like they needed to do this to keep him going to another program. I just don't get it.

As I have stated Ad nauseum, wins and losses are snapshots of of overall program health. Not simply the football program, but an overall reflection of our institution. The words of recent players are too often disregarded on this board, please. ...now there is some eminent proof that no respect is given previous warriors.........I pray they filo this board with posts, experiences, and opinions.

Most don't understand why there is an extension, but I'll continue to support the program for the kids. Most are probably good kids who want to win. I'll renew my season tickets for the players.

In a weird way, I understand the extension. It rewards Collins the academic successes of the team. But don't forget that he can still be let go at any time. Personally, I think Collins is getting better. I know many of you don't want to hear that, but I think it is true. Collins' biggest challenge at this point is upgrading and managing his staff.
Collins has improved his staff but unfortunately I believe that he still has two glaring weak links in Boyer and Hayden.
Boyer's biggest downfall is that the players can't trust him or stand him, and that won't change any time soon. Experience wise, I would venture to say that he is probably the least experienced OC at the FCS level.
RB coach Hayden is probably the only RB coach in the FCS who never played college ball. That is probably why he doesn't have the balls (or knowledge) to know what RB to play at any given time. Give Reicke and Davis a couple of years and they will be sitting on the bench, replaced by the next group of younger players.
Lets hope that the consistent coaching by Jones, Armour, Davison, Grable, Gordon, Blevins and Wikre will overcome the ineptness of Boyer and Hayden.
I'll bet you thought I forgot Cummings and Butler. Well, I have saved the best for last. Cummings turned an awful special teams into one of the best in the nation. Its a reflection of the passion he brings to the team 24/7. It's a wonder that he wasn't hired away. Kudos to Collins for this hire. And not only did Collins hire a great S&C coach in Butler (look at his success at SUU) but at the same time, Butler replaced one of the biggest weak links in Dinky.
We can only hope that Boyer gets hired away by some clueless AD and take his buddy Hayden with him.

There are ex players on this board will disagree w/ your view on coach Boyer.

Typical response "Beardown". Anytime a poster is critical of Boyer, you challenge their information, defend Boyer, and then bash poster. Based on your continued responses you are either a close friend, family member, or Boyer himself. Your affiliation doesn't matter. What you need to do his pull your head out. The players don't trust or like Boyer. "how do I know this you ask". well is very obvious when you talk to the players. Boyer doesn't have the leadership skills, integrity, or maturity to be successful. Last season he moved every offensive skill starter to second string. This is unheard of at this level, it's something you would expect from a Pop Warner coach playing his favorites.

Thanks Bear Fan. I thought that I was being an optimist when I made the post. In any case, I will continue to believe that Collins is slowly becoming a better head coach and that his inability to replace the weak links on his staff is his biggest challenge. Last year I stated that Dinky and Boyer were the weak links. If he plans to field a consistent team, he will need to take care of the Boyer situation. Interestingly, I think that Boyer and Dinky have the same major coaching fault, that is, they coach the players from a vicarious position. In other words, they subconsciously allow their own athletic career or lives, to dictate how they coach. Dinky was an overweight S&C coach who didn't practice what he preach. Having the kids be in the weight room during the off-season for EARLY morning workouts was really a way for him to express who is boss, when he wasn't even the boss of his own physical shape. As for Boyer, first time I met him was in 2011, his first year as an FCS coach, and one of the first things out of his mouth was that there was not one single person on the roster that could play at a D1 school. As soon as he walked away, my buddy and I commented that he sounded very condescending and arrogant. Not a good first impression. We conjectured that maybe he said that because HE couldn't make it at CSU. And his solution to those feelings was not to let it go, but rather to belittle the players and make sure that he dazzles them with the jargon of the day, Tempo, out-scheme and all that other bullshit. Boyer should learn and embrace Coach Wooden's Pyramid of Success. That will allow him to understand that it is not about him, rather it is about RELATIONSHIPS. Building them, maintaining them, and asking for assistance from them.

Student athletes attend UNC for very few years, however, they represent their university and program for decades.
At this point, my issue has little to do with an annual assessment based on a staff's growth. Looking at the big picture, I have to ask "what is the cost? ". The experience that today's players (tomorrow's alumni) carry with them matters. The university leadership will be long gone....what is the long term cost of their decisions?
