UNC and Colorado recruiting

Interesting article in the Greeley Tribune yesterday about how some Colorado high school coaches felt Downing and staff didn't do a good enough job recruiting CO kids. Some disagree and praise Downing.

the article keeps talking about all the Colorado kids that Glenn got, that's missing the point. Those were DII players, there are a lot more DII players in Colorado than DI players. There are some around here that think those DII championship teams would have have won the D1A national championship. My point is, there are only so many D1A and D1AA players in the state. We're not in the RMAC anymore so we need to get the best players we can, no matter where we find them.

The only reason we need to go out of state is to get better hogs. We've been bad on the lines ever since we made the jump to D1. We can go compete with NDSU and SDSU for those midwestern small-town farm boys. Check out their rosters and you'll find kids from towns like 1,000 population. No reason why they would chose NDSU and SDSU over UNC. Go get them coaches!

Absolutely what I thought...."_some_ local HS coaches had their feelings hurt because their players aren't D1AA material". One of the dumber articles I've read on the whole situation so far.

ASIDE: I'm starting to think that Peterson's CSU recruiting experience might be one of the more positive things any of the potential candidates bring to the negotiating table. Anyone else think that?

I think the article is on point. If you know anything about HS football in this state, there's definitely some talent in this state, as well as some hidden gems. I think that should a top priority for the next coach, is to keep some of that talent here. We shouldn't be losing guys to Montana, EWU, North and South Dakota. There's nothing wrong with going out of state and getting guys. This staff acted like they were CU and thought they had to go to cali and so forth for talent. Which in my opinion is harder to do. That was the knock on UNC's old baseball coach, HS coaches felt like that he didn't go after CO talent hard enough, when there's really good baseball talent here.

Yeah, I like Peterson and I could see him as head coach. He did well with the offense this year and from what I understand has some awesome recruiting connections.

I like Peterson also. Watched him in fall practices and liked how he handled the players. He needs to get out and recruit some big ol farm boys. We have resources and we just need someone to tweak a few things around here!

Not sure about the love for Peterson. What exactly in his resume would make you want to go that way? NO HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE - just a long tenure as basically a position coach at second tier D1 schools. Didn't we just see how that experiment ended?

As for his "offensive genius", take a look at the stats and they don't prove out (Big Sky stats for UNC == 7th in scoring offense, 8th in total offense, 8th in rushing, 6th in passing). We need to cut everyone from the current regime loose and start fresh.

Thank you. It's time to start fresh. Nothing scares me more than people mentioning how "great a recruiter" a guy is, or the "ties" he has. I heard that crapola with the last guy we had in here. We need a guy that's going to come in and take charge right away. No talk about changing the direction of the program, just a guy that says," I want to win...right away!"

As someone who has coached high school and college football in the state of Colorado, I think it is unbelievable the Colorado high school coaches have such a high standard of the football they bring to the table. Colorado football is not in the top 1/3 of the states when in comes to football recruiting including at the FCS level. All I ask, is that you or a high school coach you know look at the University of Montana's Football roster. Tell me where there players are coming from and tell me why they are on a different level then UNC. It doesn't take much, but they need to bring someone in who can evaluate talent and compete. I don't care about coaching salaries or scholarships, the UNC program should be better with or without 75% of their roster coming from Colorado. To be successful 50% comes from home (CO) the other 50% comes from whereever it takes to be successful.

Montana recruits from their state. They're incredibly under-rated coming out of high school and they develop while at Montana. Look at that Marc Mariani kid they had. He was a WALK ON at Montana. No scholarship offers at FCS. Now he's a Pro Bowl player in the NFL.

That's why we need Earnest Collins. He seems to have that eye for talent. He's the one who recruited Vince to UNC. I'm just thinking Hinrichs is going to screw this up and hire jack ass Stitt or O'boyle.

No, I know this. UNC needs to recruit out of state. That's another reason I don't think Logan would be a good choice. He isn't a name outside of the CO.
