The Southland Conference plans to play a full football schedule, following state guidelines in Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas. The SLC will not make any mandates to override what the states or universities determine.
McNeese President Daryl Burckel has said that in Cowboy Stadium ("The Hole"), there may be one side for those who wish to observe social distancing and the other side for those who don't choose to do so.
At this point in time, none of the Cowboys football games have been rescheduled or cancelled, unlike some of our conference mates who had games scheduled with Power Five conferences or SWAC schools. However, some of the other sports such as soccer and volleyball have been impacted. I am praying that your Bears will travel safely to and from Lake Charles and the Southwest Louisiana area in September.
Like the Bears, McNeese has a new football coach, Frank Wilson, who most recently was head coach at UTSA, but has also been an assistant with LSU's Ed Orgeron. (Sidenote: Ed Orgeron's son, Cody Orgeron, is a senior and McNeese's starting quarterback.) Coach Wilson will be McNeese's third head coach in three years! This is an unusual situation for McNeese. Head Coach Guidry was released at the end of the 2018 season. Sterlin Gilbert was hired and coached for one season (2019) before deciding to rejoin Coach Babers at Syracuse. McNeese is on probation this year and is not eligible for the FCS playoffs (thanks to the practices of Coach Guidry.)
Most Cowboy fans are thrilled to have Coach Wilson. He is well thought of and is an excellent recruiter. He hired Ronnie Letson (most recently an assistant at Colorado State) as his offensive coordinator.
