UNC vs. Cal Poly

Well what does everyone think for this week? I am going to have to go with the Mustangs. Looks like they have a solid team although I will admit the Western Washington score is throwing me a bit. I'm going to give some love to the bears though as I think Cal Poly might be overlooking us a bit (they have UC Davis next week). I predict our first non-blowout loss of the season. Can we somehow manage more than 14 points? Cal Poly 24 - UNC 17.
 
If Coach Downing can coach the "disrespect" line, and the "their overlooking us" line, then we could stand a chance. You make a good point in that if we could keep it close, it would be a moral victory. While I would rather just see a win, I'll take a loss if we can build some confidence from it. That being said (and the fact that I've been drinking already) UNC 28 - Cal Poly 21. And before you ask, I'm not taking any "action".
 
I think we will drop this game for sure :( I just hope we can post a respectable score. At this point I like Ursa would take a 'moral victory' in not getting the crap kicked out of us... But it is a real possiablity, Cal Poly is good.
 
Cal Poly has had an up and down season. They beat the crap out of Weber but lost to a bad Tx St game and almost lost to a D2 team. If it's the team that killed Weber, we will struggle but if it's the Cal Poly team that struggled against Tx St and W. Oregon, we might be ok.
 
Beardown - that is exactly right. Tough to read the Cal Poly team. I am just thinking positive this week so went with the close score hoping we were getting the Wester Washington version of the mustangs.
 
These Bears need to decide if they love the game as much as they said they did when they were recruited. I think a major ingredient missing is HEART. Open up a can of whoopass and play some smashmouth football!!

21-0 second qt. This is going to get ugly. First, we need a qb. Floopy George is horrible so is Domi-pick. I would put Schrenk in or maybe take the redshirt off of Orms. We aren't going to win a game with any of these qbs. Pathetic.

Our defense is the worst I've ever seen. EVER. Detie needs to be fired as well. Fire them all.
 
Here's my take. Honestly, I was prepared to be 0-5 at this point in the season. I thought we'd be 1-4, but knew 0-5 was a very real possibility. The Hawaii, NAU, and Cal Poly games were about what I expected to see. The San Diego and Chadron games were the only ones that turned out significantly worse than I expected, although I think I underestimated USD. Honestly, our schedule is a big part of the problem. Whoever scheduled this nonconference slate was nuts. An FBS team, a very good D2 that by many accounts would contend for the Big Sky this year, and 2 ranked FCS teams, with all but one on the road, are you kidding me? Our schedule from here on gets easier. Weber State, despite today's performance at Montana, is not a good football team. Neither is Idaho State. Montana State is down and Sacramento State has looked bad in some of its games, but good in others. Montana will kill us, and EWU will probably look similar to these last two games. I have no idea about the Portland State game, but we will probably lose by 20 or 30-ish. We're still not a good team, but at least the toughest part of the schedule is over. I think we can still eek out a win this year, maybe two, and we'll be more experienced next year.
 
Wow. I don't even know where to start. A few random thoughts:
1. gobears - I hope you are right about the future schedule lightening up. Personally I am not to sure about that. CSC and USD were two games that we should have won. The fact that we did not even compete in them is worrisome. In back to back weeks WSU has played MSU and UM very tough - that does not bode well for us. ISU was in the MSU game until the end, they also have blown out a team this year and the fact that we play them there concerns me. Sac State just beat NAU who smashed us. UM and MSU both look to be pretty good. I don't see any easy games out there.
2. Beardown you are absolutely right about the D. They gave up 621 yards this week. The first four weeks they gave up 577, 479, 560 and 507 yards, respectively. Only holding one team under 500 yards is more than alarming. Keep in mind too that these were all blowouts so it could have been much worse on the stats here.
3. 182, 214, 333, 328, and 380. That is the weekly output for the offense. In all honesty, it looks like things are starting to get a little better here as the system is in place. A whole lot of work to do, but perhaps a ray of hope? My take is that when you score 21 or more points you should be in the game. This only happened once so far, but I hope it is a sign of things to come.
4. I thought the Bears had a chance to keep the game respectable. They did not. In the past two years we have suffered 11 (out of 16 games so far) blowout losses (20 points or more). In the two years prior to that we only had 3 blowout losses (out of a possible 22). Granted there were a few easier games, but there were still plenty of games with the likes of Montana, NDSU, etc. In 2004 we were 2-9 (wins over NDSU and SUU) and in 2005 we were 4-7 (1AA wins over SE La and Sam Houston State and throttling of the D2's on the schedule). I'm starting to think that the cupboard was not as "bare" as we were led to believe and that the current issue of no upperclassmen is a reflection on the gutting of the old recruits and running them off more than they couldn't play. The excuse is wearing thin with me personally. Personally, I am certain had the old staff remained we would not be sitting here at 1-16 over the last two years. Are we better off or worse off?
 
I agree with uncfootballrules that we wouldn't be sitting at 1-16 over the last two years if the old staff had stayed but I still think it was a good move to get rid of them because being better than this staff isn't really setting the mark very high. As much as I want to get rid of this staff I think they have to get at least one more year so we can see what they can do when their recruits are juniors and seniors.

One thing that has really bothered me is the fact that so many upperclassmen left. I have been under the impression that they just weren't talented enough to play here but I have a hard time buying that. It seems like Downing just isn't a motivator and the guys are refusing to play hard for him and some would rather quit the sport than play for him. I know he sure hasn't struck me as the second coming of Joe Glenn. Time will tell if these coaches are as intolerable as I fear they might be. If all these young guys end up quitting then Downing has to go.
 
Does your chance change if the unthinkable happens - no wins this year? I hope that it doesn't but what if it does. Does a coach who is 1-21 get another year? I would say no way. If the old coaches (and I would remind everyone that Dalton is a legend in the program) get canned for 6-16 with less scholarships, less funding, etc. than you are going to have a hard time convincing me this staff gets another year. If the old staff had to go, then this one certainly does save for a miracle ending to the season.

I have seen zero improvement in the program over the past two years. The young excuse does not work with me any more. Should have recruited some Juco's if that was the case. Also, if we were getting stud recruits we should be seeing some flashes of brilliance. We are not seeing that. Why should we believe that a kid who could not make plays as a freshman or sophomore is going to be an all american his junior year?
 
you make good points uncfootballrules and I really don't know what to think. I think if we go totally defeated this year and they are all blowouts then maybe fire downing. I still think Bob Stitts would have been the best hire but since we have downing, I think he deserves a legitimate amount of time. The question is what is a legitimate amount of time? I truly don't know.
 
I think if the team was still losing but showing signs of progress is would be easier to be patient. But let's face it, this team is worse than last year. I know Downing has a 3 year contract and I fully expect him to be back next year (because we don't have the money to buy him out and pay someone else even more) and maybe that is fair but wow, show me something please, a glimmer, a sign... anything, that there is any hope. So far this season I've seen nothing, at least last year we had a couple close games.

I agree. However, I have seen some improvement with each game from the offense. On the other hand the defense seems to get worse every game.

We just have so many young players and I am not using that as an excuse but it's a reality.

I would have loved to have Stitts. I think he would have been really able to do something with more resources and not having to be handstrung recruiting only engineers. Of course the coach of the Johnstown 5 yr old girls flag football team looks good now. :x

You said it all right there, he has another year on his deal and there is no money to buy him out. Can you imagine the scholarly types uproar if he was bought out why the Athletic department still has a loan out to the University. Holy cow. I think boosters usually have to cough up the money to buy out the coach. Shall I pass the hat around.? :lol: :lol:
