UND game

Since both teams match up with the same strengths. The win just might come down to special teams play and turnovers.

Well, they don't seem too enamored to be playing in Hillsboro.

At least they'll be close to a great restaurant. There's one just down the road in Beaverton.

But what if they're running late and don't have time for a sit down meal?

Oh wait, they'll be fine:

Hey, Nodak, by rights you guys should be the Vikings! I have no idea why Massey et all has us with an edge. This is a classic 50/50 shot.

Yes a lot of Norskies in North Dakota. lol

all games between PSU VS UND has been won by the home team. Should be a good match up. I think low scoring as well.

Appreciate you coming in here with some friendly banter from the other side. Keeps things pretty lively here.

I really think we have the edge here. Looking at each of our three wins, I think it is pretty clear...

FBS wins---Washington State vs Wyoming---Cougars have not lost a game since PSU beat them, while the Cowboys have not won. Also, Wazzu won the head to head. Edge-PSU

Big Sky wins---Idaho State vs UC-Davis---As the Bengals fall, PSU win is becoming less attractive. Still, a road win (by 20) in a tough place to play. UND's win over UC-Davis at home by 7 points. Edge-PSU.

The other win---Western Oregon vs Drake---A full scholly DII team at home against a no-scholly FBS team at home. UND had Drake down until a fierce rally late in the fourth got them within 3. PSU kept WOU down the whole game. Edge-PSU.

Also the game is at PSU's home away from home. Smart money on PSU.

I agree the edge goes to the Vikings. We have many young and inexperienced players. They improve every week. This week they will need to make a big step to win. I do think our rush defense will prove better. Also our OLine is getting better so our rushing should be pretty good. Passing and pass defense could be our weakness. One thing is for sure both teams will need this win for any chance of playoff hopes. The season well only get tougher for both teams.

A little bit from our side. From Steve Brandon of the Trib (Portland Tribune for our new ND fans).

In the 12 hours I spent in Grand Forks, hey, hockey tickets are good to have and Red Pepper ain't bad.

You are or were in Grand Forks? and Why?!

WOW am I pumped for this game!! It is just wonderful that both of our programs have such a meaningful game... period. It's an interesting game in respect to how each program would like to keep progressing to get the band wagon going. Both of our programs have a chance to change how we are viewed by the rest of the conference.

Some questions:
- Can your quarterback through the ball with any accuracy? I hear he is a runner. But would like to learn more about his passing ability. Anyone have a link to his Juco film?
- Have you guys run any trick plays yet, and if not, will your coach implement them?
- How did you guys get so much better - was it new players or coaching or what?
- How much of last years team is back? Are there a lot of new starters?

I was at the game last year and remember seeing some explosive players for Portland.

Sorry for all the questions... JUST PUMPED.

Kuresa is a gamer. He has yet to really show passing skills to the level that I think Barnum would like to see, but he is smart. Our turnovers have reduced dramatically over last year and a lot of that has to do with the guy handling the ball.

Yes there was a fake FG last game. Barnum is not afraid to mix it up a little, but I believe that this year we'll see less of it because he is trying to instill a sense of tough minded grind it out football and that kind of is juxtaposed to trickery in my mind. Just my opinion.

On Defense there are quite a few guys returning. I believe their scheme is better this year. Not so much gambling. On Offense there are quite a few newer faces mixed in with more experience. New center for example. I believe that the success can be traced back to the change in coaches. Though Barnum has been with the program, I think we are seeing how much of what he did was because Burton was the head coach. The players love Barnum. He's honest with them (something Burton wasn't) and they are responding. There are some pretty good character guys (it seems) on this team that have grown into leaders on the field. I think it's paying off for them. The players can see the changes, they see the changes bringing them success, so they are in all the way now.

Hey GG nice insight.
"There are some pretty good character guys (it seems) on this team that have grown into leaders on the field. I think it's paying off for them."
Probably nails it. Burton did recruit well. Gotta give him that.

Same players for the most part, playing much more focused and confident. A much better defensive scheme IMHO as well.

Burton could recruit, no question. He could never make the talent gel, however. The last couple years I'd been hearing around the conference that on paper, PSU was as tough as anyone. But during the game, especially late in games, not so much.

If this game is as close as I think it will be, I think we will learn a lot this Saturday about the mental make-up of the coaching staff. If we don't see panic on the sideline, it will be a huge departure over the past couple of seasons.

How many times did we have penalties in the past because the wrong people were on the field? How many times did the play clock run down to zero because of confusion about what to do. How about coaches fighting with each other on the sideline (Burton V. Hill) How many times did they come out in the second half and you wondered what happened to the team that headed into the locker room 15 minutes prior.

Win or lose, if this team shows maturity on the field. If you feel like you are never out of the game. If you feel like someone.....anyone is in charge, the team will have turned a corner.

The delay of game penalties coming out of a timeout were especially maddening.
