UNLV **Dropping WSU Football?**

the best solution would to be to have an administration and athletic department sign off on playing 5 BCS away games every year, plus 8 conf games, yes that 13 games year,(to rake in dough) and embark on a 10 year plan to be FBS eligible, which would include huge fundraising program for stadium reno. If Ogden High can do(embark on 100 million fundraising program) it for historic reno why couldn't Weber State U pull it off. Maybe not the 5 bcs games, but if Idaho, Boise St., and Nevada Reno did it 15 years ago why can't WSU put together a comprehensive 10 year plan/goal to put themselves in position to be a FBS eligible school. The greater Ogden area combined with North/South Davis counties would latch on to and support a fbs football team. WSU DOES NOT have to be mired in mediocrity forever. This would also help properly finance basketball and every other athletic team at Weber and the University as a whole.

FYI genius, the NCAA sets a limit on how many games a team can play every year. FCS football is not allowed 13 regular season games.

Read the whole post and you'll quickly realize I was being sarcastic. Sheeesh. Did you take yours meds today?

First, I suspect UNLV will win this game (I hope I am wrong). They are very good this year and they are playing at home. I would love a 2 for 1 deal with a team like UNLV or other similar team from the region.

As for dropping football to save basketball, this is akin to cutting off your nose to spite your face. It would bring too high of a cost. For example, I attended graduate school at a university that did not have football (at any level). They had a men's soccer team that was actually very good and consistently a contender for a national championship (NCAA soccer, Division 1). They tried to drum up support and interest for the homecoming game - A SOCCER GAME. The whole time I was a student there, there was absolutely zero interest in their very good soccer team, D1 basketball program, and their other sports. I can't tell you how lame it was to think of homecoming as a soccer game. It was plain un-American.
Weber has a richer history with basketball, but football is a major draw for students, community, and the university community. The football team averaged 7-8 k this year, but 3 years ago, it was 3-4 k. In another few years, it will grow.
Go football and basketball!

Dream on village idiot, that land is owned by IHC and still has a fairly new building that is still in use. Not only that, but a new stadium would be cost prohibitive; whereas adding capacity would be very feasible. Sheesh, what a moron.

You're the one who wants to drop football, and you want to know if I took my meds? Child Please!! (See Chad Ocho Cinco to catch the meaning)
Congrats though WeberSki, you are now officially the BIGGEST JACK A$$ on here.
DAMN what a MORON!!

@purplepus&AJdipsh*t:
The FCS is lame at best you bitches. The point of my posts is to bring to light The Administrations need to have a plan to put ourselves in position in the next decade to move to FBS with Montana when they do. If they don't have a plan to progress the program they should just drop it, but better yet put a comprehensive plan together, and put somebody dynamic in charge. If Nevada and Idaho can have FBS programs so can Weber State. We deserve it, Ogden deserves it. Weber will end up with the land at the old hospital site eventually. IHC has absolutely no plans for it. WSU will prefer to expand campus over there as it is the only other place to grow with enrollment.

WeberSki, you have no idea what you have. To say that Weber State football is glorified high school football when the football team lost by 7 to a bowl team and by 1 to Colorado State is a stretch. You obviously have no idea of the talent that comes through here. Jamie Martin, Paul McQuistan, Pat McQuistan, Dave Hale, J.D. Folsom, and soon-to-be Josh Morris and Toone ring a bell? No disrespect to the basketball team but how many people from our basketball team are in the pros right now? There is no difference between a mid-major classification in basketball and FCS label in football. It's people like you that drag the program down and label it as inferior which keeps the program from moving to the FBS rank. You're probably one of those people sporting BYU stuff in my classes.

@ bigskychamps07:Jamie Martin like 20 years ago right. I went to those games as a kid they played Marshall in the playoffs, and Martin use to hit Dave Hall and Jon Fuller both from Weber High for huge bombs down the field. Eddie Gill, Lance Allred haven't played in the NBA have they. Weber's huge upset wins over Michigan St. and Harold's show over North Carolina captured the Nation and almost wins over Georgetown and Florida brought more notoriety to WSU than WSU losing to Marshall (nowFBS) or losing to Montana, or beating Cal Poly (most people in America have never heard of Cal Poly, and their a FCS powerhouse) or getting spanked by William&Mary(38-0) ever would. We wouldn't beat Utah once in football in 100 tries, but we spanked them at the Dee last week didn't we. Now that's good for Weber State University. I was in Fiji and met a guy at our resort who had lived back east, he knew all about Weber State because of our win over North Carolina all I did was mention I was from Ogden, Ut. To show you how much people care about FCS football all you had to do was watch the playoff selection show on ESPNews. What a joke.

Once again I said no disrespect to our basketball program but we don't have anyone playing in the pros right now. My point was that you called Weber State football a "glorified high school team". Just because our football team doesn't have the history that our basketball team has doesn't make it worthless and insignificant. Our football team just needs their significant win just like the North Carolina game. We've come close Hawaii, Wyoming, and Colorado State. I'd think you would have to agree that in the past 3 years the football team has been as successful as the basketball team if not more successful. It takes time to develop a program that has been mediocre .500 team for the past 10 years. In basketball, I was pumped to see Weber State beat Utah but it was the first time since 2000. Lets also face the fact that Utah has talent but is not a very good team this year. The football team has only played Utah once in the past 20 years and we lost by 16, to a Utah team that beat Alabama in a BCS bowl. Could have been a different story if last years' team met up with a bad Utah team.

obviously it's a dream you dingaling Are you sure your not a USU Aggie, cause you sure sound like one purplepus.
We wouldn't even need to add capacity, but it would be nice and we would need the extra seats once we went FBS because it would be packed.

Idaho Kibbie Dome 18,000
BSU Bronco stadium 32,000
SJSU 30,000
USU Romney stadium 25,000
Nevada Mackay stadium 30,000
La Tech 30,000
NMSU 30,000
FSU 41,000
10 years ago BSU spent 10 million to raise capacity from 22,600 to 30,000 and build a plaza and gallery they have since reno again to 32,000. It would probably easily cost 15 million today to add 8,000-10,000 seats and other improvements.

Utah is pretty damn good bud, before we played thay had just beat #20 ranked Illinois a big ten power and Utah beat Michigan tonight by 16 a few weeks ago Michigan was in the top 15. We scored a couple of touchdowns in the 4th at Rice Eccles in garbage time last year to make the score look a hell of a lot closer than the game really was. I do agree the football program has made huge strides the last couple of years which has renewed my hope of bigger and better.

a couple fo td's in garbage time? we lost 37-21 to the #2 FBS team in the nation, if we are a "glorified high school team" shouldn't utah's 10th string be able to destroy us?

btw, higgins and oregon st's qb's were the only 2 in 13 games utah played where the opposing qb threw for over 300 yards. No, byu, tcu and alabama didn't do that.

Utah had no excuse to let us score at any point in the game if they were as good as we were told.

how do we have players going pro if we are a joke?

Pat McQuistan - Offensive Lineman selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2006 NFL Draft
Paul McQuistan - Offensive Lineman selected by the Oakland Raiders in the 3rd round of the 2006 NFL Draft
David Hale - Offensive Lineman selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the 4th round of the 2007 NFL Draft
JD Folsom - Linebacker selected by the Miamai Dolphins in the 2008 NFL Draft
Marcus Mailei - Fullback signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2008

who's next?

There's nothing wrong with having an FCS football team unless your a closet byu or utah fan. what is so great about going to a bowl game? more than 50% of fbs teams go to bowls. that would be like 175 teams making hte ncaa tourney dude.

Ive been to just about every football and basketball game in the last 10 years. ive been to both ncaa tourney first rd games and the nit game.

i can honestly say i had as much fun going to fball games in 2008 as i ever did in any of the conference title years in basketball. our road trip win at nau last yr was as much fun as our tourney games in 2003 and 2007. i never would have believed that to be true until 2008 football shocked us.

the fact that weberski thinks we need to move up to the wac tells you he understands we have a very good football team. any talk of wsu moving to fbs prior to coach mac was never heard of and would have been a laugh.

just come to some games. you might actually like it, if you want more peopel there and more tailgaters maybe you should try it out yourself. i had a great time tailgating at 4 of the 5 home games. personally i dont really care what other people are doing, im totally fine with tailgating with out "everyone" else there too.

dont be worried about what byu and utah think because usu is fbs and they could careless about hte aggies.

The best thing a fan can do is support the program. buy season tickets and go to the games.

There is nothing wrong with having a FCS football program. Ya, if you like mediocrity I guess. FCS is so awesome I think there was like 100 fans at the last two home games combined, and you get to get spanked by powerhouses like William&Mary or SFA.

How do you get that I am an aggie fan? Just because I am being realistic? Then you turn around and say "We wouldn't even need to add capacity"? Huh? I appologize for calling you a moron, but the reaction you are having when someone calls your "idea" into question, is the same reaction some of us have when you say that we should eliminate football. All that being said, sure it is fun to dream, and I would gladly support going to FBS, but that is not going to happen without extended success at the FCS level.

Weberski, if u want us to go FBS u have to go to all the games and support the program. it will not or will never happen with your type of attitude. the first thing wsu would need to go fbs would be big attendance, facilities and everything else is already good enuf for the wac.

maybe u shoulda started a thread called "how/what can we do to go fbs?" instead of....we suck / fcs sux / we should drop football.

Hey weberski, I am going to go ahead and defend PURPLECAT not purplepus... Hands down he is one of the most die hard fans on this forum. I dare say that he is more loyal and die hard than yourself. There is no way he is a Aggie fan We loyal fans take offense to that kind of statement. His blood runs deep in purpl and with pride. Purplecat and myself were at that NAU game together cheering during that blizzard that you were too weak to attend. If you didn't go to that game becuase of the conditions (you weberski) you have no right starting talk about dropping the program. Your not a die hard weber state fan if you didn't go to that game. And Purplecat knows his facts, I would listen to his posts.

This whole argumet is idiotic. The best thing about it is that it proves that passionate Weber State fans do exsist.

First off, Weber is never going to drop football, PERIOD! However, and unfortunately, the administration isn't so keen on the idea of moving to the FBS ranks. Such a move would take a lot of money and a hell of a lot more fan support. The facilities are great. You could easily add 4-5K more seats at Stewart. Nevertheless, if Weber were to drop the football program, the athletic department would lose more money every year than what they would gain. NEED I HAVE TO SAY THIS AGAIN?!? Please posters don't be like CATCAT, read... THE FOOTBALL PROGRAM MAKES MONEY. It doesn't make money they way we would like, ticket sales, among other traditional means, but by playing FBS teams. Also, because of the football program, the athletic department garners more boosters, donations and sponsors than if it was only a one dimensional department, that is dependent upon only one money making program (totally dependent upon Mens Basketball). Without football the department would lose a shiz load of cash every year. Also, the community would become even less interested in Weber State, which would hurt the departments wallet. Granted, the Basketball program is the schools anchor, and the only other program that makes substantial monies for the department, but it needs the football program to help build fan support, student loyalty, alumni interests, and community sponsorship/support. Its better to have two money making sports rather than just one. Also, its a traditional sport that is extremely popular. I would love nothing more than to see Weber get into the WAC or SUNBELT (the belt is worse than the Sky), but its not going to happen. We need imagination, innovation, and leadership dedicated to following a well established plan. Maybe Bovee is the man for the job, I hope so. If not we need to keep hoping.

No matter, like all of you, I would love nothing more than to see any plan from the athletic department. Even one so infintesimal showing how the septic tanks in the stadium are emptied. Heavens, thats at least a start. Maybe they could build on that one ingenious idea. Go Wildcats!!
