UNLV Game Thread

That was a crazy game. My heart dropped out of my chest when they missed the field goal.

Damn. This one stings. We had it. I must admit though we look improved in every aspect of the game...except the kicker.

And the head coach... A real coach would take the talent on this team and would have called a much better game against what seemed to be an out of rhythm, deflated, and tired UNLV...

Not sure if this game should leave me cautiously optimistic for our upcoming games as they looked much better than I thought they would and responded well after going behind early or if this is just more of the same, missed field goals and poor clock management at then end (why not let them score on us with a minute left?).

I guess it remains to be seen but there is something in this game that has me excited for the next few (especially the televised Montana game).

And another note, I really missed Troy calling the game but the two in the radio booth today did really well. My internet was down (we had a bad storm) so all I had was my iphone tunein radio feed for the first 3 quarters. And too bad BigSkyTV isn't as good as the stream we had tonight.

I honestly think they should have gone on 4th and short. We were pushing them around at the end and a suspect kicker. Go for the first and try again- worst case scenario they are back on the 4 with a D that had been playing lights out.

I am also pleasantly surprised on the turnout on this board for the game. It was like a ghost town on here this time last year... I am enjoying the posts and the commentary from the fans, it's pretty cool to see the Roar slowly being restored...

I thought it was a good opportunity to get a kicker who has been amazing in practice a huge confidence boost by having him kick a chip shot go ahead field goal in a FBS stadium. It really could have set him up for the season. Unfortunately, it may have done the opposite.

And against an offense we already got a safety against. I am positive if they would have went for it on 4th down and didn't get it, their QB would have been quaking in his boots trying to avoid another safety. I think they should have went for it also.

At the least they should have taken a delay to set up a better angle for the kicker to try and make it easier on him. I feel like it was handled poorly.

Gentlemen, we're debating reason to not kick a 23 yarder to win a game...

Well not win the game but still if we're debating reasons to not take a 23 yarder that's bad.

On the plus side, how fantastic was our defense? We have DB's that can hang on to the ball, guys that can get to the QB. They were really fun to watch.

Even if we had a competent kicker I still would have gone for it. We are playing and FCS school, I would tell the team to get that first down and seal it so they would have to score a Touchdown to win, but that's just me- I would rather go down swinging to take down a "Goliath" if you will. I want to see a team that can go for the throat and take a risk especially if they have the other team on the run.

That's a tough call. Sort of a damned if you do and damned if you don't type thing. He should have made the kick. That being said, you win as a team and lose as a team. You could go back to that one series in the 4th when we had a good drive going and then went 30 yards backwards because of penalties - players not focused.

I saw a lot of good things out there from both sides of the ball. I thought play calling was decent. I would have liked to see Rubs run it a little more, but that's just me.

I'm hoping we destroy Houston Baptist, who lost to McMurry tonight 26-17.

In years past it felt like we as a fanbase would have high hopes in the preseason only for it to be drained after week 1. This may be the first time I remember actually being MORE optimistic AFTER week 1.

We'll find out in a couple weeks if the proverbial "corner" has been turned. But this team looked like nothing I've ever seen before. Winning many of the battles on the line of scrimmage and just overall competing. They faced adversity within the game and they just kept fighting back. How many times in the past have we seen this team completely fall apart right after something went against them? That is probably what stands out the most to me tonight.

To look forward, it's Houston Baptist next week. Apparently this is really only their 2nd year of football, they lost to DII McMurry tonight, so hopefully the first win can be had there in a business like manner. I think it is the three weeks after that game when we will probably know where this team is. A gauntlet stretch where it is @ 8th ranked Northern Iowa, at 4th-ranked Montana and hosting 25th-ranked (and probably underrated) Northern Arizona. We're gonna find out some things soon. Tonight was actually some fun though.

Biggest improvement I saw in tonight's game was the secondary. They pretty much handled two very good receivers and had four picks.

As great as they played and as encouraged we all are , it's still too bad we cant make a field goal when we really need to ! All in all this was really a step forward. Go Bears

Maybe I'm a glass half full kind of person, although I have certainly been know to voice my displeasure with the state of the team at times, but after going to the game and watching the team fight until the clock hit zero I am pretty high on the possibilities for this season.

This team has fight in them. They are developing an attitude on both sides of the ball, not just the defense. Yes, the defense is going to be really, really good and maybe the O-Line could have blocked a little better. But considering it was their 1st game of the year and they were playing an FBS team who had already played a game and had to be fired up to make some sort of statement after their embarrassment in Arizona , I thought they performed more than admirably. Rubes played an outstanding game for his first start. I6 of 21 in his first start is impressive.

Were there some mistakes made by the coaches and the kids? Of course there were. Some of it was just the 1st game jitters and some of it was poor game management. I agree that they should have taken a delay penalty on the kick and given the kicker a better angle. I also believe they should have let UNLV score on 2nd and goal with 1:04 left. Had they done that, we would have had a minute or so to drive down the field and tie the game up. Instead they let them run more of the clock off. The interception was a spectacular play, but left us with a nearly impossible shot to win the game.

You can blame the kicker all you want, but there were plenty of other mistakes and missed opportunities that contributed to that loss. I can only imagine the pressure he was feeling being a true freshman, playing his first game and being put in the position to win it for the team. I happen to believe this kid is the real deal and will give him the benefit of the doubt for now. I just hope this game didn't kill his psyche or confidence.

One final thought- AWESOME turnout by the Alumni, parents and fans.  That was a really fun crowd to be a part of. Only wish it could be like that at every road game.

Go Bears!
