UVU

Well…..I thought I had adequately adjusted my expectations for this season after the CSU game, but I guess I have some more work to do. I am pragmatic and rarely over-optimistic, but I did not think this was a rebuilding season. Even if I lower my expectations more, there will never be sufficient excuses to lose to UVU. We continue to solidify our destiny as a good mid-major program. For a minute, it looked like we were changing gears, but we are not.

Well said. I feel 100% the same. I didn't underestimate the talent being lost with Bam & Mook, but apparently did not realize just how much leadership and toughness they added to this team.

Well think of our schedule last yr. We had lots of games and time to see what we have on the court. We just had 12 days off and now we have another 6!! Two games in 18 days is ridiculous. I doubt we gel by conference time. I think we will be lucky to make it to the tourney. :ohno:
I just hope no one dies when we play ranked UCLA

I'm at a loss for words. Weren't we suppose to be better this year with all the guys we had returning? We SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the worst Weber State team since Cravens last year as coach. I hope they figure it out, but I'm not holding my breath. I don't want to blame the bad scheduling, because that bull crap. We just flat out stink. I wish I could figure out exactly why? Maybe Mook and Bamforth were everything to this team. We cant rebound worth crap. We cant shoot. Our bigs are playing awful. Our offense is just painful to watch. We run 2 plays. 1. Pass the ball inside to Tress or Bolomboy and everyone else just stand around and watch them throw up a prayer and 2. Give the ball to Berry and everyone else just stand there and let him drive it in there and throw up a prayer. That's pretty much it. We have only 3 more OOC games left. UCLA will beat the living crap out of us and 2 home games against teams my church ball team could probably beat. We are not going to be ready for conference. I have watched most of the Big Sky teams play a little here and there and right now I would put us in the lower half easy. It pains me to say, but unless we figure it out we will be lucky to get 5th place in conference. I hope I'm wrong. :wall:

Playing ever 10 days is really affecting our team. But no matter, UVU is a BAD team. Weber gave up 18 offensive rebounds, were really weak on defense at times, and finally offensively were really easy to guard. Hell, how could we not be, when three out of the five players on the floor are standing around trying to figure things out.

One bright spot is that Royce only continues to get better. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. But, it seems like everyone else has gotten worse. Bolomboy looks like a lost deer and takes 25mins to figure out how to play defense. I almost started calling him Bambi, because he was getting pushed around so easily last night by UVU. His offense is improving though, and I know he will figure things out. Tres had his WTF game last night; just like last year in San Jose. He didn't show up and Weber losses a close game. What the hell was with his last FGA?? He has a wide open dunk and airballs a layup??? 1-10...WEBER NEEDS BIG TRES TO SHOW UP EVERY NIGHT!! He was playing against guys who were far less talented, slower, and smaller. I did like his swats on Ben last night though.

One really ugly spot last night, Waaaayy to many stupid TOs, and not enough assists. Yes, Weber has a lot of youth on the team, but there are guys who have been with the program for some time. Berry, Tres, Rich, to name three and they are three of our starters. Our guys look lost and leaderless. I really can't wait till Hajek can play. At least we will get some toughness on the floor and guy who isn't afraid to lead.

WEBER DOESN'T LOSE TO UVU!!!

RAHE has yet to win a game, other than against SUU, on an opposing in-state teams floor. I'm sick of the "we are getting better for conference" excuse. Beat the instate teams. I'm not saying get rid of Rahe, I'm a huge fan of coach and I know we are where we are because of him, but I just wish he would take these instate games a little more seriously. I hate UVU and hate knowing that we lost to them. No matter how good Weber ends up, we will all know...WE LOST TO UVU.

Tough lost! Seems that the team is in a funk. Scheduling, weather and lack of team play all seem to be an issue. Conference title is still possible, but doesn't look probable. Probably should've not been so understanding when we looked so badl after the exhibition game. So what's next? Do we play targeting next year and get our youth ready?

I got a feeling that this year is only going to get worse. Expected Tresnak to really dominate. Is his ankle still an issue? Is Joel a basketball player or an awesome athlete?

It's going to be a long season. We're going to need a great recruiting season!

@tal: I think you're spot-on with your post, and I especially share in the frustration with the seemingly never-ending "we are getting better for conference" approach or "excuse." I'm really hungry for Weber to be competitive OOC and in-state and thought they had the talent to begin upping their game this season.

As for the continual talk of the schedule (or lack there of), I agree it's been horrible and it's very tough to gel as a team without more games. However, there are plenty of things that can benefit from practice time and Weber has had plenty of that. Just a few of the things that shouldn't be affected by a lack of games is defensive intensity and hustle, rebound positioning and aggressiveness, not looking lost offensively and being able to competently run any number of offensive sets, FTs (which were decent last night,) and FG% (sure, there will be off nights and better defensive teams but you can practice shooting and even simulate hands in your face without playing games.) Some things are just basketball, despite the level or situation and you just need to use your talent and go play the game (see Hoosiers when Coach Dale measures the height of the rim at the Field House.)

I am not going to throw in the towel quite so fast. Something is seriously wrong chemistry wise. Last year our team had great chemistry. This year there is a lot of guys hanging their heads. I was called out for saying that we have a leadership problem. Well folks, we still have a leadership problem and a crappy schedule.

I'm really glad you touched on this, because I am starting to notice a disturbing trend with Berry. While I admire his aggressive nature and willingness to attack the basket and draw fouls, it seems like every game, he's getting a little more out of control. Trying TOO hard to draw fouls and create contact, rather than focusing on taking good shots or looking for the open man. Not to mention his eagerness to take a lot of cheap threes. I suppose I'd have more room to complain if he was shooting an awful percentage, but it's still frustrating to watch and probably one reason why our assist totals are in the gutter. :twocents:

i have no opinion until we can play two games in the same month. this schedule has been really bad so far. obviously there isn't much worse than losing to uvu but i wil just hope and assume they wil make the needed changes by conf play.

remember in 2009 when daviin davis came on here and was trippin on the fans when the team had lost 3 of its last 4, then conf play started shortly after and they went 15-1 and had top 25 votes on the last day of the regular season. i think its the the schedule is a big part of our prob at this point. baskeball is a sport of rhythm and flow.

I agree with the fact that berry is becoming some sort of a ball hog. It doesnt help when we run P offensive set everytime down the floor. We arent very creative with our offensive play calling. But the last play where berry turned it over and we had to foul, he should have passed it as jordan was wide open at the top of the key. For a last play of the game not very creative. Disappointing

I disagree, Berry is the best player, he has a green light. That play was set up for him to drive to the basket, he was hammered. The ref's swallowed their whistles after they had been calling those plays fouls all night. As for the play calling, when your big's can't hold onto the ball like they did against UVU it kills a lot of plays. The team will be fine, yes it sucks but regroup.

The first half we looked dazed and confused. Got to get more games in!

Im ok with berry shooting. Thas fine and I do agree he is the best all around player. But there was no play set up, No screens no ball work just a crossover and dribble to his right into three guys in the middle of the lane. You wont get that call at the end of a game when you go into a pack like that and try and draw a foul, especially on the road.
And yes as for our bigs, Joel passed well and found some open guys out of the post, but Tres, good lord that was the worst game I have ever seen him play and that missed layup at the end was plain embarrassing. :wall:

I'll agree with that. I haven't reviewed the numbers but it sure seems like our bigs have been utterly outplayed in every game.
BYU - wash, Tres played well
CSU - outplayed, Tres hurt
USU - outplayed
UVU - outplayed

Our "strength" hasn't been there yet.

I wasn't necessarily implying that he's being a ball hog, just that he seems to be forcing a lot of his shots. It works well for him when WSU is in transition, running the floor. He almost always gets to the line in those situations. But sometimes, it does seem like he would be better served to slow down a bit and run the offense. One piece of silver lining we can take from the UVU game was the free-throw shooting. 78 percent is a HUGE improvement from that awful performance at the line against San Jose State. :-|

Sorry ball hog is not the right word. that is more play ground stuff. It seems to me he looks for his shot first before passing and setting up the offense, which if he is on, thats great. He hovers right around the 40% mark which isnt bad by any means, I just think his shots could be a little easier if he didnt have to create. But he has been practicing his foul shots. 10-11, pretty damn good.

I has got too be the fact that they are doubling tres in the post. He is trying to shoot over two guys and it isnt working. He needs to pass to the open man when the double come, like joel started doing which lead to 2 3s and tres missed lay up. Then they will be forced to lay off and tres can go to work. This team seems to force alot and i think that will smooth itself over as the games start to sstring together.

I think that a lot of the issues are from the lack of games on our schedule, and that we have a few guys playing hurt. Tres hasn't been quite right since CSU, and that is a huge issue for our inside game. He can't really sit out, because Hajek is injured too. Fulton can't pick up more than what he can do, since he isn't anywhere near 100%...and then we have a bunch of young guys. Bolomboy will be fine. He is a young guy and he is a new starter. Last year, he was kinda an afterthought. Mook was the guy at the 4 and he was very good. We are seeing how much we miss Mook right now, but Bolomboy will get better. He had a really great second half against UVU, and will only get better. I now think the St. Katherine game is great. Keep the guys playing. Give some of our guys a rest and lets some of the guys on the bench get some more mins. I don't think we see Hajek till maybe UCLA, but most likely Northern New Mexico.

We seem to be missing Bamforth and Otis more than I thought we would. We have the athletes. They just are not playing with the same confidence as those two were. Some of that may be related to how the schedule has played out. Maybe lining up a few patsies, early in the season, isn't such a bad idea after all. Maybe we shouldn't be criticizing a weaker OOC schedule so much. We need more games and a better blend/ordering of games. :coffee:
