I hope all of you just saw what I just did: a wonderful segment on Mike, including comments from Downing, and his inclusion on the Allstate Good Works Team. Mike was the focus of the feature, which told the story about how our student-athletes got involved with the bone marrow registry.

I'll keep my eyes open to see if I can track it down online, in case anyone missed it. Scott, will the school get a copy of that?

For those of you who won't click on the link. It's not long but very touching:

Last fall, in honor of former NC football player Sam Safken, who passed away from leukemia, the Northern Colorado football team volunteered to participate in the National Marrow Donor Program. Samples were gathered from each of the players and listed on a computerized registry. Defensive back Mike Van Portfliet was later notified that his sample matched an anonymous 26-year-old female patient in need of a transplant. Van Portfliet agreed to participate in an experimental donation procedure and spent five hours in the hospital connected to an Apheresis machine. Van Portfliet later said, “I love to call myself a living testament to what happens when you just get involved and care.”

Thanks for posting this Troy.
