Vik FB Tradition: The Viking Walk (image upgrade time)

First of all, does the Vik Walk remain with us and is it indeed making its way into Football Tradition? This is a great publicity tour de force for each and every home game. Now I believe it is time for an image upgrade by focusing in on what it really is and how it is best thought of by both the team, coaches, team and coaching alumni and the perception of Portland public opinion.

What is this bit of emerging Tradition? Does it not serve to render a power surge before the game? Is itnot more than a healthy team constitutional before the game? What is it in addition to being a physical reveal of Portland's growth-team in college football to downtown Portland before the game, a reality-check, some fun self-advertising.

What would be an even better feeling and more accurate name for this? What kind of synonyms are there for "Walk."? How about the following names?

1. The Vik Hike & Lumber

2. The Vik Stride & Strut

3. The Vik Tromp & Trample

4. The Vik Power Walk & Swagger

One of these names probably fits the bill best. Let's have some serious fun with this idea. We can build a Tradition here that is all ours and unique in the college football world. We don't need to copy anybody else. We can generate our own basis for greatness.

broadway- you are right. what started out as a great concept by the athletic dept. is in need of help.
i had envisioned the entire team accompanied by the rally squad and a pep band (or at least the drum section)
walking in mass to the stadium and along the way turning not a few heads and gaining some notority for the
team

Did you see any of the walks? i saw a couple of them as they passed by the tailgate lot. here are some
observations and suggestions.

1. the team appeared to be in street clothes, as far as i could tell. i realize that they can't walk in full
uniform, but they should all be in at least matching jerseys so the public knows who they are.

2. i didn't see any rally members or pep music at all. without some sort of music or beat the whole thing
risks falling flat
3. they weren't "in mass" at all,but walked a few at a time. it took 15-20minutes for them all to arrive
4. this event has huge potential, but as it is now, i vote for VIKING STRAGGLE

What better advertising could there be than to have the team traverse downtown en masse and in their game uniforms? They needn't wear cleats during the walk. If this is not being organized properly, then I smell a rat. This would generate a lot of excitement in any downtown and is totally organic and homegrown. Might there be thwarters of progress (opposition) within the organization? If so, they need to be ferreted out and expeled.

The team needs to be seen by the general public in all its regalia and glory.

One of the key bottom lines is to promote Community Loyalty and to do everything to stamp out influence opposing it. Loyalty cannot be forced, but it can be inspired and attracted. Disloyalty can suggested and its influence can manifest itself in various ways. To me, the Oregonian newpaper, for example, promotes disloyalty against Portland State. Ugly apparel has the same effect of leaving warm hearts feeling cold. Where is the fashion sense?

We have a battle on our hands to promote it, to have it stay, to build up its social reality and to have it grow. Opposition to building loyalty at PSU needs to be exposed and dealt with a strong arm. I believe I know some of key staff personnel at PSU that are nothing more than snakes-in-the-grass and it would be wise to get rid of them immediately -- either that or they are blithering incompetents that need to be replaced on that basis. Why not audit the staff personnel from the bottom up? Authentic loyalty invites scrutiny, whereas it sets fraudulent hearts atremble.

See?

Absolutely. The players should be wearing their jerseys and walking as a huge group en masse. The football team did the Viking Walk for what? A single season? I thought it was a very good idea, but they weren't doing it right. So, oughtn't we get it going right? Seems like it would be a great tradition so long it is done in a spirited and not dispirited fashion like Illinois is doing.

They seem like they would enjoy it very much. A bit of stardom and recognition before the game. I wonder if Coach Barnum would like to institute this and make it a stable piece of Viking Tradition. Again, what better advertising for the fact that there is a college football team right here than to go out walking in downtown Portland and encounter a huge one on their way to a game?

I hope they make the right version a part of Barney Ball. Everyone can ride the bus after the game when they've worked. Vik Walk, Viking Walk, Viking Game Day Walk, call it what you will. It can help relax the team prior to a game. After all, there are the new uniforms to show to the Portland strollers, up close and more personal. Work a little PR while you're at it.

Howdy.

They did the Vik walk a couple times last year with the mascot leading the way banging on the drum to the Urban Tailgate starting about an hour before kickoff. Football team leaves 2-3 hours prior to kickoff.

This should be done before every home game. We ought not be so flakey when it comes to tradition.

Obviously, we don't seem to care what other
Conference schools think . This should be our greatest clue that we need to go where we do care about what the other membership thinks. We ought to go Left Coast affiliation.
  :o
