We can see what they're doing. The question is: Why is it being allowed to persist? What's the holdup?

Fear that escaping mediocrity would cost some people their jobs? ... and some key personnel are blocking it? If so, they need to be identified and given their release. If a quality program were to emerge, then we (at long last) would have professionals managing it and not amateurs and hobbyists.

Is the problem political coziness in mediocrity? This is Oregon's greatest economic problem. Cronies who get together and underfill job performance. Sure, they're dedicated. Dedicated to PERS and their own retirement!! They're being narcissistic, however. They need to be removed by those above them in the organizational chart.

I believe a reorganization is in order: Hire June Jones as Head Coach and allow him to install his own OC. If he's interested, retain Jaime Hill as DC. Focus Nigel Burton as Head of Recruiting and Special Teams, giving him the title of Associate Head Coach so he doesn't lose his coaching senority.

Then I think we may have something on which to bank. Right now, the program simply does not fly. Losing big to Cal Poly was disgraceful.

What is the holdup on our becoming a team of legitimacy? Why the constant delay tactics and blither-blather?

Is the timing not right? Year after year the same ole crappola. Do us all a favor and get your ship together

Half your game plan is reliant on one player that you play half the time? It's pretty obvious that the Vikings miss DJ Adams. With him in the lineup last season, he made the Vikings mufti-demensional. Without a solid running game, you can't open up the passing game. I mentioned it half jokingly before, but if they really want to shake things up, I'd put KM and Penn in the game at the same time, side by side. Talk about wildcat, you wouldn't know who they would snap the ball to, if they were passing, running, option. It might be crazy, but it would beat what we have going now.

It is quite certain that Michigan head coach Brady Hoke will be released during or after this season. His OC is Big Al Borges.

The likelihood is that Big Al will not be retained by Michigan, so good opportunity for the Vikings.

Wish List coaching staff:

......................... Head Coach: June Jones
OC: Al Borges DC: Jaime Hill
..................... Special Teams Coordinator & Head of Recruiting: Nigel Burton

Something that was pointed out to me in Boise... once you lay out the general schemes and patterns (and, eventually, plays) for both the offense and defense, there might be things you hold back until later in the season, but generally, you're set. It certainly cannot be changed in a week and there's only a quarter of a chance it can be changed with a bye week. When it comes to college, you've got the players you have.

Does anyone else think PSU blew its wad (if not financially, perhaps in terms of "tolerance of conditions") on Jerry Glanville? I don't want to address Broadway's dreamscape except to say that PSU brought in David Hersh BECAUSE of the past, and that's getting PSU nowhere.

I agree. Pokey Allen is not going to ride his donkey down Burnside any time soon, no matter how much the city wants it. It is time to move on.

Walsh had this program to where it was competing at the top of the conference and we should have been in the playoffs in 2006 (we had the resume, we didn't have anyone to lobby for us). Had Walsh stayed for 2007, we would have been contending again (we entered 2007 ranked #13 in the preseason poll). But Glanville came in (cheap) and changed the defense. Davis came in (cheap) and changed the offense. We didn't have the athletes then to handle a sudden change on both sides, particularly going from Walsh's "boring" ball control offense to the "exciting" run and shoot. Thus started our downward slide that we really have not got out of yet. Glanville left with the worse won-lost percentage in the history of PSU football (.273, tied with Ron Stratton).

Walsh won but wasn't "showy". Glanville was showy but did not win. Now we have Burton who doesn't seem to be either. How would Jones do, I don't know. This I do know, this weekend the Ducks play Thursday and the Beavers play right before us. Our game is here in town and is also broadcast across the NW via Root. If the product is good, if we play good football, people will want to come back. If the product stinks, like against Western or Cal Poly, no one will want to come out again, regardless of the efforts of Hersh. This is the best opportunity we have to move forward.

Great post. I think one thing that has also been missing is the lack of an effective AD who knows football. Teri Mariani hired Jerry Glanville and Torre Chisholm hired Nigel Burton. Terri was a softball coach who was filling in for AD. Torre's background was from a non-football school. It will be a challenge to hire an effective football coach without an effective and visionary AD. I think a more effective AD would never have hired Burton.

News flash: Al Borges was out at Michigan last year.

Even better. Has he yet landed anywhere? Is he coaching now? Excellent time to enter into communication with him, and Coach Jones while we're at it.

What may satisfy Nigel Burton is to give him the title "Associate Head Coach" to learn from an experience head coach under Jones. Right now, from his record, he does not yet merit another head coaching job. Bringing in a seasoned mentor like June Jones would reinstate his viability in the marketplace, if the Viks do indeed become winners.

Do you mean effective in football or effective in general? Not challenging your point, but I'm curious how a more effective (let's say football effective in this case) AD would have fared on the hire. I recall Pfulgrad taking his name out, and a couple of others not really having much of an interest. I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall to see if that was due to the impression of our AD, or if it was based on the state/status/word of our football program. In other words, would a more football effective AD have made a different hire, and would that hire have performed better 4+ years in...
