Volleyball 2012

Wow! I thought sure ISU would beat EWU! It's now tied up at the top, with the match Saturday for the whole tamale. It's nice to know ISU has the same problems we've had on the road. Mitchell did a terrific job last night against WSU - she hit .800. I don't think it will be that easy against ISU. But it would sure be nice to have the tournament on our home turf next year!

We did it!! ISU went down in flames tonight, 1-3. We win the conference, and host the tournament next year. Now for THIS year's tournament. With us and ISU receiving a bye, it could well end up PSU vs. ISU in the tournament final, a rematch. Tonight Cheyne Corrado, playing little this year, came through with 14 kills. She replaced Wheeleer, who played only one set - sick? Injured? Very good play from Ellis, Schlatter, and Kasi. Looks like we're peaking at just the right time. Go Viks!

The day after. I noticed in the team picture taken after the match that Wheeler is on crutches. Wheeler's been our best hitter all season long. To have her go out in the last match, with the tournament coming up, is a bummer. Corrado came in to replace her and in the ensuing 3 1/2 sets hit 14 kills at .290. A worthy replacement! And Corrado's a sophomore.

Volleyball's all about the team. Last night we had four players with 8 kills or more - two at 16 and 14. ISU had two with 8 or more, one at 16. That's teamwork, sharing the ball, placing it where it does the most good. But never mind the kills, though they're fun to watch. Note the digs. They had 69; we had 79. Keeping the ball in play, patiently waiting for the other team to make a mistake. Sooner or later they do. We hit .212; they hit .133. We lead the conference in holding teams below their usual hitting percentage. ISU normally hits .248, second in conference; last night they hit .133. That's defense!

Can we take the tournament without Wheeler? It's a challenge. But last night suggests that Corrado will slide successfully into her slot. My bet's on PSU taking the tournament.

Did we exhaust ourselves with the ISU match? UNC certainly took us to the cleaners in the tournament. Look on the bright side; the tournament will be at PSU next season, and we'll be coming back with the team nearly intact and a year more experienced. We'll miss Ellis and Kristinikova - we'll see Miyashiro and Kawashima, our red shirt freshmen, play for the first time. It's going to be a good year. Go Vikings!
