Weber @ Montana, Tuesday Night

The whole atmosphere, surounding this game, reminds me of the Bruce Collins, Michael Richardson era. I seem to remember this same senario playing out in Bruce's senior year. That year Bruce completely outplayed Michael and we beat UM on their home floor. Mark Matos skipped around the floor, at the end, with his fist in the air. The Montana crowd had to be restrained from attacking him. They hated it and we all loved it.

Will history repeat itself? I think that it just might happen.

should be a big crowd.

griz had 5,003 for hawaii and 7,003 for the bobcats last saturday. their capacity i believe is 7,000 so they had a sellout.

Actually, a large crowd is in our favor. We are used to it, they are not. I hope it is a sellout. That would be awsome!!!

Lets get it on

  GO WILDCATS

I believe UM is gonna try a white out the Wildcats night, how nice of Montana to fill thier arena with one of our colors :-D

That is very Bengals of the Grizz to do.

It's going to be interesting. I wish this game wasn't being played on a Tuesday night. I would definitely be up there in Missoula if it wasn't. Oh well...I'm really worried about the refs assigned to this game. I'm hoping that Casas, the old man, and the bowling ball are all sent to other venues. I would be alright with Bob, Buzz Cut, and Fernando the Bull Fighter (even though he kinda screwed over USU, at the Y, last year, when he called Wesley for a Tech in the closing moments of a close game). KEEP CURRY IN IDAHO and as far away from this game as humanly possible.

I'm thinking that Weber will have a surprise or two up their sleeves for Montana.

PG: Cherry vs. Lillard...Advantage CATS. Cherry is the second best PG in the league.

SG: Jamaar vs. Bamforth...Slight advantage CATS. Bamforth has more experience than Jamaar and is a lot quicker than some realize. He is faster out of the two. Also, he is far more consistent from the Arch and at creating his own shot. I'm not trashing Jamarr. He is a hell of a good player, and is a solid 2nd teamer this season. He is a better rebounder than Bamforth. Passing, he might have the edge too, but Bamforth isn't bad at rebounding or passing and they both play solid defense. A huge difference between the two is that Bamforth can QB the team and run the offense. Another bonus that Jamaar isn't quite as solid on yet. Only one reason why he is a 2nd teamer, Bamforth is the 1st teamers.

SF: Steward vs. Bull...Advantage Grizz. I hate to do this, even though Bull has gotten better, he still isn't at 100% and probably won't be for the rest of the season. Yes, he has had solid moments since his injury, but he isn't consistent. Against UNCO last week for one, Bull was starting to look like himself. One tough SOB who can hit big shots and change momentum. As stated, he is still tough as nails and probably the most physical player on the floor at any given time, hard to do since Mahoney is often on the floor at the same time. However, one HUGE reason why the Grizz have been consistent and good this year is Art Steward. Cherry, Selvig, and Jamaar get most of the attention, but I think Steward is the true game changer. He has all the components needed in a SF. He has speed, can create, has an outside and inside game, and plays solid defense. He isn't as good of a rebounder as Bull, but offensively, he is extremely important and has the ability to really open up and spread out opposing defenses with his abilities. Also, he plays far better at home than on the road. Yet, if Tinkle tries to have Steward guard Lillard again, he will be on the bench early. He isn't quick enough. That was a huge mistake by Tinkle. I think Rahe should start three guards again. That causes huge problems for the Grizz. They aren't quick enough.

PF: Selvig vs. Mahoney...Slight Advantage Grizz (because they are at home). Selvig is a finesse player, while Mahoney is a bruiser. Selvig hates going up against Mahone. Mahoney is physical and guards him expertly. These two don't have any animosity towards one another off the court, but when they hit the hardwood it is a war. Sometimes, it seems like Selvig is running for his life, but Selvig can do it all if he is feeling it. If Mahoney can knock him off his game, it could be a long night for the Grizz. They depend sooo much on the intangibles that Selvig provides. Spreading the defense for one and his excellent passing abilities. But toughness isn't something he is known for, and toughness could be the difference especially on the boards. In Ogden Selvig wouldn't go for rebounds when Mook was in the game. I really think he was scared of Mook. Too bad he isn't available. However, Mahoney is a great rebouder and solid defender. Those are Mahones strong suits. Also, bad for the Grizz, Mahoney knows how to guard Selvig. He knows how to limit Selvigs game. Nevertheless, like Steward, Selvig plays far better at home than on the road.

C: Ward vs. Tres....Advantage Draw. This comes down to whoever wants it more. Tres is quickly becoming a dominant big, but Ward shots a high percentage and is one tough SOB. Tres, as much as I like him, needs to hit the boards harder. I like his effort and he is getting better at rebounding, but he isn't there yet. Offensively and defensively, he has the ability to totally own Ward. Ward, though, is one physical guy.

Bench...Advantage WEBER. This could be the difference maker. Wheels, Rich, Fulton, bring a lot more in terms of athleticism, offensive consistency, toughness, and speed than what UM has to offer. Mook and Hajek would be great additions, but they aren't going to be there so...The key, keep our bigs out of foul trouble and on the floor. But if Weber has to go small, that might not be in UM's favor. Too much speed has doomed UM in other games. USF???

selvig is a good player but mahoney might not be guarding him all that much if selvig hides out around the 3pt line which is fine with me. when we played the griz in ogden we outscored them in the paint 28-16. if we dont have foul trouble issues with our bigs we can keep dishing it to the paint and not have to shoot as many 3's.

also in that last game our biggest lead in the game was up by 23 on the griz. we need to hold on to these leads if we can get them in missoula.

as for the bench, in our last matchup, we out scored their bench 19-0 in the first half then they out scored our bend 15-0 in the sec half.

we need to slow down cherry and handle the ball against him so he doens't get easy steals. last time, selvig had 7 pts and 4 rebounds. if we can hold him to that again we should have a great chance to win. trez only played 21 min vs griz due to foul trouble. he had 12 & 6 n shot 6-9 FG. so we need him to be in the game.

most important on the to do list in missoula: get to the free-throw line. we are the #1 free-throw shooting team in the nation! in the last matchup we hit 18-22 but only had 7 attempts in the 2nd half.

I'm always nervous about Big Sky officials, but is it wrong of me to think we are gonna get totally screwed in this one? Just a bad feeling in my stomach. Strange things happen to the zebras in Missoula...

Huh. Everyone esle in the conference says that about Ogden. Wonder why that is.....?

If anything, UM gets screwed by officiating (see: 2011 BSC Championship game; hell, even the impartial ESPN guys -- who rarely comment on officiating -- said 4 times during the broadcast how one-sided the officiating was).

My thoughts are that if the Griz get a few calls here and there it (1) will be no different than any home game in college basketball, and (2) might actually be a little payback for the ass reaming they got last year.

I agree on the subject of the BIg Sky Championship game last year, that was murder what those refs did.

Good points on the match-ups. These are my thoughts (which are similar to yours):
Guards: Advantage Weber
Lillard & Bamforth No need to elaborate on Dame – Bam is money when his shot is going (which it does for big games).
Lillard averages 25 points a game, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 turnovers per game.
Bamforth averages 15 ppg, 4 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2 turnovers.
Cherry averages 16 points, 4 rebound, 3 assists, and 3 turnovers per game.
Jamar averages 13 ppg, 5.5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 turnovers.

Center = Push/slight advantage for Montana.
Tresnak has improved a lot over the year and can create a shot around the basket. Selvig can shoot the 3 and plays solid D and rebounds well.
Tresnak averages 10 ppg, 4 rebounds, and 1 turnover
Selvig averages 10 ppg, 4 rebounds, and 1 turnover

Forwards: Advantage Weber
Bullinger & Mahoney = Advantage Weber because the Bull is close to being back to first team Big Sky form and Mahoney the guy who does tons of little things to give you an edge. While these two don’t score as much as Montana’s players, they provide rebounding, defense, and hustle.
Bullinger averages 6 ppg, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 turnover. Gives toughness and rebounding edge.
Mahoney averages 4 ppg, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1 block, and 1000’s of hustle plays that don’t show up on the stat sheet.
Steward averages 9.5 ppg, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1.5 turnovers.
Ward averages 10 ppg, 4 rebounds, half an assist and 1 turnover

Bench = Major advantage Weber
Richardson, Fulton, Wheelwright v Stockton
Weber is much deeper. Stockton is good, but I would take Richardson or Wheelwright over Stockton. Fulton adds a nice shooting touch from outside and depth. He is coming on really strong the last few games.

Coaching = Push. Both are great coaches, but Tinkle may have a slight edge as he has won the big game two years ago.

Everett I like your posts and yes, the refs totally screwed over the Grizz last year, but as a close observer of football, the Grizz should never complain about refs. You guys always get the advantage on the gridiron.

Montana Favored by 4.5 to 5.5 points, depending on the line you follow:

Yep. When it was Dame's time to take over and be the star, he was content to be a role player. Story of his career in big games. Just maddening to watch.

Barring the results of next week's tourney, is it now safe to say that Randy simply can't win the big ones? I hate to and don't want to believe it, but almost every opportunity he's had to separate himself from that stigma, the Wildcats choke it away.

I disagree... Montana has the definite advantage here... Rahe recruits well, Montana coach gets more out of his players and had his kids playing inspired defense.

I don't believe at all it was Dame's mindset here... I think it was his coach's ability to inspire, get him and the team prepared and up for this game.

Oh well, we get a second shot at beating them on their floor this year!

Griz deserve to host with Weber scoring 45 points in an entire game.

That was a joke of a game for weber. What was their Fg%? Cherry had a heck of a game though he definitely played with a chip on his shoulder.

Not entirely the refs fault, but any time weber looked to be making a run the stripes seemed to make sure to stop it.

We better be shooting better in the tourny or Lillard may not make it to the big dance
