Weber State @ NAU

Flagstaff has always been tough…it took Hill some time to get a win there. How do the Wildcats come out of a bye week? Notice Montana had no trouble beating Northern Colorado in Greeley. NAU will be more motivated and Weber State has really nothing left to play for. I expect Lumberjacks to win by at least 14.

Why expect anything other than a close, infuriating loss?
I agree. Our team has been inconsistent and very young over the past few years. Our defense has not been up to what we have come to expect. We used to just shut other teams down. Lately, we can't stop anybody. I'm hoping they get that figured out in the recruiting and development process.

I think they just have to clean it up a little.....

Play that epitomizes this season is NAU was content to go into halftime and ran a should be easy to stop QB keeper…it went 20 yards so they ended up at a shot at a FG…luckily missed.

I’d never stay as a backup QB under Mental. Munoz fumbled away the Northern Colorado game and today threw two quick picks…not even one series does a backup come in. Munoz has two completions…and two picks at the half. Sometimes you need to sit a QB to help him sort out mistakes or realize he needs to keep earning the job.

AD won’t fire Mental. He’s got another year.
I think you almost have to give a new coach a minimum of three years. However, if coach Mental doesn't get it turned around by next year, then I would think it is time to start looking at alternatives. I like coach Mental, but he will certainly be on the hot seat next year.

Most times, I’d agree with you, but Mental inherited a good program and is getting worse as time goes on. Not sure you want to waste another year in hopes he gets better. Struggles with red zone offense, total breakdowns for segments of a game, and poor decisions are still the same as at the beginning of the season and it’s November.

I’m sure Jody Sears would have liked a third year. He might be the only coach applying if Mental gets another year…last search showed how little interest there was in the job.

The program was declining before Mental took it over and then they lost some really good players to BYU. Mental was tasked with a rebuilding situation. It doesn't seem to have turned in the right direction in year two of that process, but I still stand by giving him his full three years. If it doesn't start off so good next year, then we need to start looking at the future beyond this staff.

I understand all of the concern over what has happened this year with one senior on offense, four on defense and two on special teams. I just think it is prudent to give this coaching staff and team a fair chance to get it right.

The situation with Sears was totally different.

Mental should be fired along with the lazy athletic director but neither will be because the University couldn't care less about sports. Mental is not a head coach no fire or enthusiasm and there is no accountability whatsoever Munoz can throw six picks and Mental wouldn't take him out. I will say I love our running backs our offense would be horrible without Bankston and Godley they run like beasts. I pray they return next season but I wouldn't be surprised if they transfer I hope not I love seeing them run. We just need a fresh start with a new coaching staff they should try and get Eric Kjar he is a great coach and his son is on the team he knows how to win and his teams have great discipline.

Oldrunner how was the Sears situation different he took over in a worse situation than what Mental has. He is just a bad coach I saw him laughing and smiling with the players late in the fourth quarter that is a terrible sign to me. Munoz is also regressing every week he looked terrible today and he continues to make bad decisions with no consequences that to me is a big problem.

As I recall, Sears was made the interim coach when our head coach quit before doing any coaching. They weren't happy with who they got in their search, so they kept him on for another year. Sears struggled to get the respect of his players and we hired Hill. Hill's first two years were not good at all, I think he only had two wins in each of those years. Hill's third year showed remarkable improvement and he went on to be a very good coach.

I'm not saying that Mental is going to turn out like Hill. All I am saying is that he, his staff, and the team deserve another year to see if they can get it right. If they do, Great. If they don't, do another search and try to get someone who can turn it around.

Oldrunner Mental took over a good but not great team and I know he doesn't have the respect of his players. The only players that have been productive are Jay Hill's players. Mental has been at the program 3 years and the offense has gotten worse every year under him that is my point. Munoz is getting worse every game and he has no confidence along with making horrible decisions that is bad coaching. Unfortunately college football now is different from before you can't wait around 4 years players will leave and I see a mass exioudus this off-season unless we make a coaching change.

Hill took over a dumpster fire, even though his first two seasons weren’t good…)how could they be?) the discipline and culture improved immediately. They actually played NDSU very tough at home and made it a competitive game. You could see the improvements working as time went on. Mental inherited a playoff team…sure program was declining but still a playoff team. If Mental like almost any coach on earth would have pulled Weisser out sooner in his first year…say like the 40 point homecoming drubbing to Montana State, they may have made the playoffs. In year two, Mental has given and I mean given wins to McNeese, Lamar, and Northern Colorado.

It is getting worse as time goes on. NAU was fired up for the game while Weber State looked like they were waiting for a bus on the sideline. Munoz threw two quick picks and no sit down for at least a series. Mental is not a head coach type…no discipline, no firing up his team, etc.

One more year and Sears will be the only application submitted when the job comes open…but then again, AD will just probably promote someone on the staff.

If Crompton or University cared about athletics, Mental would be gone at end of the year…but they don’t. Mental goes 6-5 in year 3, he’ll probably get a 3 year extension.

WAIT..."the program was declining?" HOW? Weber won 10 games? The three games the Cats lost were to MSU twice and Sacramento State. Two of those losses were because of, uh...errant long snaps. Weber was 6 bad snaps away from an undefeated season and a completely different playoff picture. THAT IS NOT A PROGRAM IN DECLINE!!!!!! We did not lose a lot from that team and then won 6 games the following season, along with a complete shellacking by MSU at home. It has only been two seasons and it is VERY clear to me, Mikey is struggling as HC. To me, he doesn't exhibit the personality or even the professionalism necessary to lead a DI program.

ALSO...HILL had the absolutely most competitive 2 win team in the history of the conference in his first season. EVERY game the Cats were it in. His second season was our first winning season since Mac and one or two plays away from going to the playoffs. TWO YEARS after taking over Coach Hill had a winning team and one on the verge of the playoffs.

MENTAL TOOK OVER A TEAM THAT WAS A CONFERENCE CONTENDER. HILL TOOK OVER A TEAM THAT WAS A DUMPSTER FIRE. NO COMPARISON.

Yeah, Old’s comment about Jay Hill’s first two years not being good at all is revisionist history. There was very little talent on those teams but you could see immediately how much tougher and smarter those teams played compared to the Sears years. It was night and day, even if it didn’t show up in the standings immediately.

Mental hasn’t given anything to feel optimistic about. We’re trending sharply downwards. With our schedule and the Big Sky having a down year there is no excuse to miss the playoffs this year, but we won’t even sniff .500. Hell, I’d be surprised if we beat the Bungles this week.

I don’t need to see another year of this, I’ve seen plenty to know Mental isn’t the right guy.

What's WSU's length of contract with HC Mental? Does anyone even know publicly? Used to be that coach's hires were published with a years term. Not aware that this nor the salary was provided when they named Mental. Is it now private in-house info.? What's the point of saying he should go now or will they extend his contract without knowing the terms? It's pretty clear that Weber can't afford (or will not pay) a buyout! Wishful thinking aside...
