Weber State (11-3) at Portland State (7-8)
GAME NOTES: Appearing as one of the teams to beat in the Big Sky Conference this season, the Weber State Wildcats take their perfect 3-0 league mark on the road tonight to challenge the Portland State Vikings at the Stott Center.

Weber State, the only team in the conference with double-digit wins overall entering the weekend, joins Montana as the only team in the Big Sky yet to lose a league bout. On Thursday night, the Wildcats took care of business against Eastern Washington in Cheney in a 76-69 victory. The win was the third in as many conference outings and ran WSU's overall win streak to five in a row.

As for the Vikings, a team which is a perfect 5-0 at home so far in 2011-12, they too were in action two nights ago and managed to work their way into the win column with a commanding 82-62 victory over Northern Arizona. The win snapped a four-game slide by PSU and was just the second triumph in the last eight games for a team that began the campaign 5-2.

With respect to the all-time series between these two schools on the hardwood, the Wildcats own a 27-11 advantage, although PSU has gone 10-8 at home over the years. The teams split their two matchups last season.

Damian Lillard scored a game-high 30 points as he guided Weber State to a seven-point win over the Eastern Washington Eagles in Big Sky Conference play at Reese Court two nights ago. Lillard, who has now scored at least 30 points four times this season and has led the team in scoring in all but two games, made good on 7-of-17 shots from the floor and all but one of his 13 free-throw chances. Scott Bamforth accounted for 19 points and Kyle Tresnak 13 and seven rebounds for the visitors. The Wildcats, who outscored the hosts at the charity stripe by a 23-12 margin, picked up the victory despite turning the ball over 22 times. The nation's leading scorer with 25.5 ppg, Lillard has been doing it all for the Wildcats from shooting 46.1 percent from three-point range and 90.4 percent at the free-throw line, to clearing almost six rebounds per game and handing out a team-best 49 assists. Bamforth, the only other player to have led the Wildcats in scoring this season, accounts for another 15.2 ppg which means between the two they are generating more than half the unit's 79.5 ppg.

Portland State turned the ball over 20 times against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Thursday night, but that mattered little as the hosts shot a staggering 62.0 percent from the field, including 69.6 percent in the second half, as the Vikings captured the easy 20-point victory. Except for Nate Lozeau, who missed all three of his field goal attempts and was held scoreless, every starter for PSU scored in double figures, beginning with Charles Odum with 18 points, to go along with five assists. Chehales Tapscott posted 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Lateef McMullan and Michael Harthun with 12 points apiece in the dominating effort. Odum has been the leading scorer in each of the last four games and as such he is also pacing the team overall in 2011-12 with his 17.7 ppg, although his mere 24.5 percent shooting from three-point range could stand some attention at practice. Tapscott (13.5 ppg) checks in with 9.1 rpg which has helped boost the Vikings on the glass and give the team a rebounding advantage over more than four per game entering the weekend.

With Lillard on their side, not to mention Bamforth, the Wildcats are going to be a tough to beat this season and even though PSU has yet to lose at home, there is good reason to think that first defeat could take place tonight.

I believe PSU will press @ full court against Weber tonight wreaking all sorts of havoc. I think it's been 3 years since WSU won at Stott C. Should be a good game......

I think Bullinger is out for them tonight.

Keys to us winning are limiting turnovers and shooting the three ball over the zone that we'll probably see.

So I probably shouldn't be all pissed off about this one, but dang we really played well tonight.

Lillard + Bamforth + Officials = PSU loss

I try not to bitch about the officiating, because the Big Sky officials are terrible, so it pretty much all works out in the end. However, the outcome of tonight's game was affected by the officials and the Big Sky should be embarrassed. Twice a Weber State player called a timeout when he did not have clear possession of the ball. I think one, if not both, resulted in WSU baskets. That was just the tip of the iceberg on the officiating in the second half.

Anyways...

Lillard was unreal in the first half and it seemed to be summed up by that three at the end of the first half, which should also be attributed to bad coaching by us. Wait until eight seconds, force a bad shot, then give the other team some time to get a shot off. Bad. Hats off to Lillard who I think played the entire game. Please go pro. ;-)

I hope that center for them is ok. That knee injury seemed really bad. Hate to see a kid go down like that, but good to see him make it to the bench for the second half.

Good strides in the turnover department for us tonight. Only eight to their six. After Thursday's ugly game, I didn't expect us to keep it under double digits.

Some thoughts:

- It would be nice to see Harthun get more of a killer instinct. There was a couple passes that he got where he had a bit of space and could have taken the three point shot. He's pretty long, and if he just looks to shoot he can get a good shot off. Four shots tonight and you have to shoot to score.

- Tapscott. Beast. Backbone of team.

- We out rebounded WSU tonight, but not when it counted at the end.

- I'm not sure if WSU will be going to the tourney this year. They are a solid team, but the bulk of their offensive production comes from Lillard and Bamforth. Those guys played a combined 74 minutes tonight. A college season is a marathon. It's going to be tough for those two as the season wears on.

- Odum needs to dish the ball more.

We have 2 starters out who will be back the next week or 2. Lillard, and Bamforth have had to carry us. Otis & Bullinger will be huge for us coming back.

I don't really care about bad officiating when it goes both ways. The officiating in this game was horribly called against us. I saw a blocking foul called on Tapscott when his arms were straight up (which is never called a foul), and then later in the game their defense did the same thing and no whistle. There's just no excuse for such one sided officiating.

Also, Lillard is a legit talent. We needed to do a MUCH better job on blanketing him throughout the game. Having our 5'8" PG guard him through most of the game was a mistake, IMO.

I think PSU out played Weber, we lost the game due to the officials.

Weber State total fouls- 20
Portland State total fouls- 20

Weber State freethrows- 20-25
Portland State Freethrows- 21-28

You lost because of your inability to stop either Bamforth or Lillard, or making only 1 basket in the last 3:04 minutes, your inability to play defense, and shooting a 34.6 percent in the second half, (while your opponent shoots 44.8 percent), missing 7 freethrows, going 0-5 for 3's in the second half, letting Weber have 13 second chance points to your 6, and 18 points off turnovers to your 8, being up 15 points with 2:28 left in the first half to going into halftime with only a 7 point lead, and getting outscored by 14 in the second half.

The refs had nothing to do with it, by the looks of things, they were pretty even.

I think Weber showed that they are the class of the Big Sky Saturday night. The Vikings played one of the best first halves I can remember in the last 10 years at the Stott and Weber managed to stick around, stay cool and pounce when opportunity struck. I would be surprised if they drop more than two Big Sky games barring more injuries.

That said, there is no question the referees did a terrible job in the second half, helping a WSU team that needed no help to get back into the game. There were even a couple of calls that had WSU players chuckling. Previous posters have noted some of the specifics. Just because things look balanced on the score sheet doesn't mean they were. If you have watched any Big Sky basketball you know how inconsistent refs are from half to half and the disappointing tendency to try and "make up" for blown calls in one half with calls in the other.

Still, many teams fail to take advantage of the windows opened by refs. Weber did not, and they deserve credit for that.

I know the Big Sky Schools shouldn't expect much but it is still perplexing why the refs can't be better. I don't expect world class quality but a little consistency shouldn't be a stretch.
