Weber State @ San Diego State Aug 31

Looking like U-dub not having any trouble with EWU, but UNI gave then ranked Iowa State everything they could handle, losing in 3OT.

I’d love to see a win vs an FBS team. They are hard to come by, and I’m still not sold on the offense making strides.

SDSU 20 WSU 13

Hoping I am on wrong and the Wildcats can start off with a statement win!

Go Wildcats!

Our best chance for points is our defense and special teams again. SDSU has a good defense, but the offense looks like last year...same crappy scheme handicapping the talent on offense. It was a missed opportunity not to get a new O coordinator in after last season.

Well, that performance didn't fill me with optimism for the season. The D seemed pretty good but I'm not convinced SDSU's O offered too much of a challenge, especially with a new offensive scheme. I think the D will improve and be fine but it sure looks like they're going to have to be the crutch for another fairly weak O. Too bad for Shaheed, nice run back and very well could have been a game-winning play.

Upcoming opponents and total yardages:
CP - beat San Diego 52-34 at home; put up 607 yards total O with about 36% passing, gave up 535 with about 78% passing.

Nevada - beat Purdue 34-31 at home; put up 404 yards total O with about 73% passing, gave up 519 with about 82% passing.

UNI - lost at Iowa St. 29-26 in 3 OTs; put up 262 yards total O with about 88% passing, gave up 463 with about 60% passing.

Don't know if this says anything but Weber's secondary may be getting tested more and will certainly need to get more than 35 yards rushing to compete.

One questionable holding call away from winning the game, no thanks to a pathetic showing by the offense. Feels a lot like last season. Got to hand it to the defensive backfield. That was the biggest concern for me going in and I thought they played really well.

Tough loss. One play away from a win.

Defense - A minus
I think we looked pretty good on defense against an offense that was not very good. New starters seemed to play well. DB's had some very tight coverage most of the night. Not many missed tackles. Several tough stops on 3rd or 4th and short. One fumble recovered on the failed field goal attempt.

Offense - D minus
SDSU has a pretty stout defense, but our play calling was terrible. Several missed blocks which destroyed key plays. 4 or 5 false starts all on the same player (Justin Malone) is ridiculous. We were in poor field position all night which also hurt the offense. Outside of one interception late we had good ball security, albeit in a terribly conservative offense.

Special Teams - C plus
A couple good/great returns and a muffed punt. We were out punted tonight and that really pinned us back in poor field position. Rashid Shaheed got robbed of a great return. Josh Davis had a good return to the 40. Not much else to grade.

Injuries
Rashid seemed to be on the trainers table a few times during the night. Josh took a few big hits. Mostly an injury free night.

Time to fix the offense and keep dialing up the defense. Cal Poly looked improved against San Diego.

Did Tyler Downs play? The box score shows that Atagi started. I had to stream on my phone so it was difficult to see.

I was at the game but no changes were announced to the starting line up. He does not appear to have played per the participation reports. I just reviewed some of the game footage and Atagi did start.

Not sure if Downs was injured before the game. I heard after the game that Marque Collins also sat out with a minor injury. But it is difficult to know much as Weber doesn't discuss injuries or update rosters or depth charts.

It was definitely frustrating watching our offense. They definitely didn't perform the greatest, but one thing we've all got to remember is that SDSU is coached by Rocky Long. That dude has an amazing defensive mind, and he has a lot of starters on the side of the ball back from a top 30 defensive team. Yes, I really worry about the play calling; especially since we were moving the ball through the air, but...I don't understand the obsession with running the ball. Sometimes, you've just got to scrap the game plan and do something else.

Love Coach Hill, in every aspect. You never doubt his desire to win but he goes about it the right way. Another WSU coach could take note.

"...every game is important. I want to win every game."

I ended up with really good, club level, seats and could see the play quite clearly. Our O line simply could not hold a block on any of their D line or linebackers. Passing was quite iffy, due to having no time to throw. Running plays seemed to never get past that line. Our D was also dominating. When SDSU strung enough plays together to get into FG range, it was because their O line got away with a little holding, and that allowed their runner to get into our secondary. That game could just as easily been 0 - 0. They called holding on Shaheed's return, but no replay was shown on their VB. I didn't see any hold or bad block. They threw the flag way, way, way behind the play. They didn't throw it until he was already breaking away. I'm not saying that it was totally made up, but it sure looked suspicious. Oh well, we got paid, and their fans are now calling for Rocky's head.
