Week 1 - UTAH STATE

Not seeing anything to get excited about, unfortunately. Lines getting worked, D-ends are non-existent, return backs can't get a hold of the ball and get going, Clark throwing behind receivers in the flats (still!), some questionable play call, and injury. This is getting ugly, just slower than last time. I was sure hoping for more fight.

"Wildcats out of sync right now" (announcer on streaming from collegeinsider -2nd Qtr), couple of drops on punt receiving, minus yards on offense...unfortunately not a good showing so far by Weber St...21-0 USU.

....and right on cue, the defense gets a couple of stops and the offense has a quality drive but chokes the opportunity away. I don't know what's more frustrating, Clark missing wide open receivers or receivers dropping catchable balls.

I'll ask my boy when he gets home, but for others who went to the game, did Clark slightly under/behind throw Garrett in the 2nd? It looked catchable on TV but it also looked like he had to turn back more than he should have, being wide open.

Disastrous first quarter and red-zone possessions aside, we're only down 15 at the break. Very fortunate, and still in it.

Same issues as last season. Bad in the red zone and dropped passes. What the hell is McKay Murphy in there trying to catch passes? And the special teams has been downright awful. BUT, lucky to only be down 15.

Right, but I'm encouraged by the defense's play so far. First game of the season, gave up some long runs early, and have since looked formidable.

Is this Mountain West broadcast crew not aware that we are located an hour away with only a 300-feet elevation difference? They talk about WSU adjusting to the elevation, like they think we play thousands of miles away.

Glad that's over, 25 pts less of a beating than the meeting before...not expected. Disappointing first game, the Aggies dominated in several ways. Wildcats have lots to work on but at least the competition goes down a level to the FCS season ahead. Work out the kinks, Wildcats. :-(

Left the game at the start of the 4th quarter thank God! Overall impression is that the team still lacks toughness, speed, skill, and heart. Other then that though we're pretty good!! Honestly though the offense moved the ball but had critical errors, Clark still has the touch of Edward Scissorhands, and the defense couldn't stop a blind team!! I hope this game is an anomaly but I'm afraid for what's to come unfortunately, and we better hope injuries don't get too bad because our backups are total scrubs!!

My word! Just finished watching the 1st Quarter of the SUU@uu game and what a difference comparing BSC teams. SUU looks like they've been practicing and know how to play the game. They most certainly look more skilled at most positions on both sides of the ball. They look confident and sure of themselves. They look like athletes.

Why does Weber look so different? Why were countless Wildcats laying on the turf at a rate of about one every 3-5 plays? Why did Weber not only look so slow but not in positions to help with the lack of speed? I shouldn't be concerned about Weber after one game in Logan but I am.

Wow, could not stop the run at all, especially around the ends. Difference in speed really showed in a big way. Very disappointing game.

For the record since you want the exact stats: Cam did start and play in all 11 games last year on every offensive series. He was the X receiver in the offense and was definetly to go to receiver for the wildcats and no one would argue with that. The fact is he only had 2 TD's last year and only average 13.2 yards per catch as the X receiver. The wildcats had TE's 240 pounds that averaged more yards per catch. 1 of his TD's and his only long catch of the season for 68 yards was a result of a totally blown coverage against the bisons up in North Dakota and he was able to run untouched all the way into the end zone. So yes when your X receiver plays every game and can only get you 2 tugs the whole season there is a few questions that has to be answered in regards to YAC's. There were also other receivers that played the whole season and had 1 or less TD's as well. Yes lots of catch's as well as lots of drops. Let's face it at the college and pro level its not if you can catch as a receiver, that is a given. It's about what can you do with the ball after you catch. The receiving area is a major opportunity to improve at in the upcoming season but it looks like the same cast of characters.

So no dropped ball stats and no YAC stats?

How about we just wait and see how this season plays out? Either we will have a passing attack and be a more well rounded team with playoff aspirations or we won't.

Not a surprise, but after game 1 we still appear to have no passing attack. Jadrian needs to go.

Great start to the season. :ohno:

Im not gonna give up on this team, but that was embarrassing, glad I decided not to go.

Final Post Game Wrap up:

Positives:
New Tight end transfer out of San Jose State 87# for WSU is the real deal!
Punter 47# monster punting job. Hitting 50 and 60 yard punts into a 30 mph wind
Offensive line, just keeps getting better every year, outstanding across the board.
Running backs 26 and 13 picking up on the positive from last year
Play calling from the box was was a bit improved from LY. Even innovative at times and refreshing
New pre-game and travel gear from a adidas a major step up from last year.
New Maverick stadium was incredible
Costa Vida concessions was a nice touch
USU fans the nicest people but very late arriving

Negatives:
Clarks first hitch and go long pass was the worst Duck I have seen since the Canadian Migration
Clark proved again that he has not learned to read a defense and just continues to stare receivers down until the clear out which is always the kiss of death.
5 Dropped passes and counting, Yes 5! At this rate we will end up having more drops for the season than LY
Dropped pass by 26 on a perfect throw by Clark in the end zone
Dropped or Fumble what ever you want to call it by 6# on the 25 going. Major Momentum Killer
NO YACS!. Cam 1# is WSU Wideout burner and he is averaging 4 yards a catch, Now that is a deep threat.
Defense had way to many injuries and starters not playing so I will make no comments but containment was pathetic
WEBER STATE FAN BASE-PATHETIC!! less than an hour drive for the season opener and besides the Band of WSU it was basically no show. Coach Hill's wife with cancer was able to show up at least some fans could show up.
Half time adjustments by the coaching staff of WSU--NONE-This is the difference between good and great coaching staffs.
Strangest weather for a game I have ever been to. Heat, Sun, Clouds, Wind, Rain you name it

Yes the negatives are bigger than the positives. WSU could of made it a one TD game going into half time but the same mistakes of dropped passes and absolutely no deep threat from last year continue to haunt them.

This old timer is packing up the Winnebago and headed to South Dakota.

We agree on a couple things. Clark was horrible. He threw that first (and only) deep ball to Cam and it was 20 yards behind and 50 yards high. Lucky it wasn't picked off. Then the throw in the end zone when we played jumbo set was also high and wide. The audible on 3 and long to a bubblescreen which he then threw poorly kinda summed up the night for Jadrian.

While I saw a few drops, they weren't great throws. The throw to Garrett which he juggled 3 times was behind him by a couple steps. He still should have caught it, but it was not a perfect throw.

YAC- agreed there was very little. But the routes and the offense didn't allow for much. We primarily targeted tight ends and backs in the flats and they did well, but you won't get YAC with those routes/receivers. Zero touch and seldom were receivers hit in stride. So play calling and/or QB talent to blame as much or more than receivers.

TRIPPES
Oh yea, WSU has got to stop putting the likes of FULL BACKS 41#, 35# and meat TE's like 33# in wide out and trippes formation, it's embarrassing. Does anyone really think they are a deep threat by putting them wide to the outside. I was on the sidelines and could hear the DBs from USU laughing at WSU in their wide out meat Trippes formation, it's really a bad joke that never worked last year and we are going right back to it. Stop the the INSANITY, please. Full backs belong lined up behind the Center and QB.
