Week 10: Hornets vs. Montana

The BS TV feel will be the Hornets feed, not the HD Max Media broadcast. Were we playing in Missoula, it'd be the other way around. Too bad a local carrier won't pick up the game in Cali though...

thanks for the info. on the feed.

Would love a local cable channel to pick up Sac State, Davis and Cal Poly.

I scratch my head each Saturday morning waking up to watch the CAA broadcast of the day on Comcast Sports Net here in the SF Bay Area. i wonder why I am watching New Hamphire, Vilanova and Richmond instead of Sac State, Cal Poly or Davis which would be of much more interest to west coast football fans and the hundreds of thousands of alumni of Calif. Big Sky Schools. Hope this will change down the road. Hopefully the Big Sky commissioner and his office will someday realize the potential of Big Sky football here in the largest state in America and biggest media markets in the BSC.

The SacBee is reporting that Kellerman will be starting against UM and that Ezekiel Graham and Demetrius Warren will back him up. However, the two-deep on HornetSports.com shows Jordan Robinson as the starter with Kellerman backing him up... lol :ohno:

I called this an upset special earlier in the week and I'm sticking by it in true SH fashion... No matter what happens, I always enjoy playing UM; let's go SAC!!!

SAC 42
UM 38 F

In my dreamland the Hornets are tied 21-21 at the half, then go up 35-21 only to have UM storm back and go up 38-35 with 1:30 left in the game. The Hornets get the ball, drive the length of the field and Safron scrambles in for the winning TD from an empty set on the goalline. Hornets Win 42-38.

G. Safron: 20-30 for 271 yds and 2TD/2INT, 40 yards rushing, TD.

B. Kellerman: 8 rushes, 28 yards, TD
E. Graham: 9 rushes, 54 yards, TD
D. Warren: 4 rushes, 22 yards

D. Carter 6 rec, 83 yds
S. Harrison 2 rec, 30 yds
M. Norrise 7 rec, 111 yds, TD
E. Graham 3 rec 31 yds
C. Broadnax 1 rec, 12 yds
D. Maciel 1 rec, 4 yds, TD

The unicorn award goes to M. Norrise for a Punt return TD!

Also, am I missing something or is there no SAC/UM preview in the Bee this week? All I see is an article on Dano Graves and the UCD/CP game this weekend... LAME!!!

yes.

Sounds like the Sac State radio feed is fnally fixed

But the big sky tv feed which apears to be th Max media Montana feed is not working well. Pictue stalls an no audio.

This is possibly 24-7 at the half, but stupid turnovers have us tied at 17 at the half... Let's see who can make the right adjustments and take this game!

What a game, I'm exhausted and I can't imagine how the players feel...couple thoughts:

-Turnovers were the difference, as usual. Graham's fumble was big because Sac was marching in for aTD on the opening drive, the other two led to quick Montana TD's.

-I take back everything I have ever said about Safron. Dude is the toughest SOB to play the position. I don't know how he was walking after the first hit that laid him out, his head hit the ground so hard, and the second was a straight gut shot. Guy carried the team on his shoulders.

-Everytime the coaches go conservative offensively it costs them. Before the half with 4 minutes to go they tried to run the ball and kill the clock and ended up punting to Montana, who scored right away. I give credit because instead of doing the same exact thing with a minute left, they went back to being aggressive and scored a TD before the half. But then in OT it seemed like they went right back to being conservative.

-I was sitting on the goal line for Montana's TD on 4th down late in the 4th quarter and don't think he got in.

-I was soooo happy when they decided to go for two at the end of regulation. Thought the defense was done. But the play clock nearly ran out and Sperbeck called timeout and changed his mind. Wish they went for the win. Goes back to what I've been saying about the lack of a killer instinct.

-The margin of error against top teams is so small, Sac has to stop shooting itself in the foot.

So proud of another good Hornet team that cannot get over the hump. Sac State takes top 20 teams to the wire and comes up short. The players must be so frustrated.

Loved the Max media feed today on bigsky.rtv as it was the best picture and views of the field , play and stadium ever on big sky tv. Almost like it was a home broadtc as Max zmeida was all over the Sac State brand and even played Sac State promos. Hopefully the Sac State athletic dept. is working on a broadcast like this as the normal bsc tv. feed is super poor.

More thoughts on this game from me later, but Safron, oh Safron. I take back all my negative comments. The guy is a warrior and carried this team. Well done kid...

Hornetsports Recap: http://www.hornetsports.com/sports/fball/2013-14/releases/20131102i80zyv

First thing is first before I start railing on this team: Safron is a total gamer. He put this team on his back and carried them today and we would have lost by 4 TD’s if he doesn’t go out there and just throw it down all afternoon. Battled through some late hits/cheap shots and still carried this team. Absolute stud.

Also a hats off to Cornish for stepping up. He got the PK duties and nailed all the PATs and the FG in OT. Good job.

Now onto the negatives. Turnovers were the difference. I will say that McDade fumble should have never happened. Refs missed a blatant late hit on Safron (along with a few others) that should have given the Hornets a 1st down. Doubtful that McDade does anything other than hand off in that situation (UM scored on a long run the next play). Refs had a hand in this game but the Hornets overcame. UM was bailed out by a phantom PI in the endzone on two separate drives. Tough breaks but again Safron led this team back, biggest issue regarding the refs was their indifference to protect Safron from the late hits.

Kick coverage was horrendous. Not sure why the Hornets kept kicking it deep when they were going to give up returns to the 35+ every time. A squib or pooch will accomplish the same thing.

Defense was nonexistent. I expected this, but dear God our secondary is just awful. If Sperbeck makes it to next season I think he needs to replace the entire defensive coaching staff (again). Our DBs were just clueless all game long (again), an absolute embarrassment (again).

Coaching blows it yet again. As mentioned that conservative play calling at the end of the 1st half gave UM a free TD. Not sure why Sperbeck keeps making this mistake but it’s been obvious since week 3 that this offense does nothing unless its foot is on the pedal all game long. I was hoping for Sperbeck to go for 2 at the end of the game; saw he stupidly took out Norrise and Carter and went with a jumbo set for the 2pt conversion and was glad they kicked the PAT instead. Then the Hornets go to conservative play calling in OT and knew the game was lost once we kicked the FG. Same stupid decisions time and time again by this coaching staff.

So this loss mathematically eliminates us from the post season, and any shot at a split BSC Championship is gone as well. So the predicament I am in (and maybe others as well) is do we cheer for wins? If losing out means Sperbeck is sent packing is that a bad thing? IMO worst case is the Hornets go 2-1 the rest of the way (6-6, 5-3 BSC) and Sperbeck is brought back (or given another extension) for yet another season of “almost beat the top teams”. What say ye?

SD: I understand your frustration and even share it to some degree. I also see a difference between cheering for losses to get the coach canned and a coach playing for losses to get the #1 draft pick. But I think the ethics there are the same: it's not cool. Staff and players have to play for the win, and fans have to root for the win (and, in our case, hope the AD sees through the coaching brain freeze and blow him out).

I know this starts getting into areas we've already gone over ad infinitum, but I don't think you can just say you want a change without defining what that change should be. You've done a good job of that in other threads, though, as have the rest of us. I'm not a fan of the mid-season blowout, but we can't sit around on it, either. To be fair to the team AND to the staff, we have to drop the axe within a week or so after the last game. It would be unfair to the staff in the highest degree to do it during December, particularly during the week before Christmas. It would be unfair to the team to do it after New Years, because the ensuing search takes time that ought to be spent installing the new system during the spring semester coaching classes, preparing for Spring Ball. So, while I have my preferences (which are already well known in these parts, so I won't bore you to tears by mentioning them again), we HAVE to drop the axe within a week after the season ends, conduct a thorough search, make a selection, and have the new staff in place in time to welcome the team back for spring semester.
