I don't even know what to say about these near wins any more.
I know exactly what to say: A loss is a loss is a loss is a loss. There are no moral victories here, no points for showing up, no honors for close calls, and no accolades for individual performances. (Happy for Saffron, but would rather have a W.) You gotta bring the A game to beat Montana because, as we all know, the refs give them everything.
1. How many times are the db’s going to get burned? They are playing every down for the big play, ignoring the fundamentals. They play the game looking for a pick-6. Just cover someone! I am a little surprised at how horrific the DB play was this year considering the experience level. I am going to say it: the DB play was simply embarrassing. If these coaches had an ounce of sense, they would be coaching fundamentals week in and week out.
2. You also have to know, coming into this game, that we are not getting away with anything. Montana late hits, holds, commits PI on every play, and they get away with it. The team has to be prepared for it. The PI call on Odiase was a joke; the "targeting" on Hannum was also spurrious. Instead of Montana being at their own 40, those two penalties put them at the Sac 10 yard line.
3. Sperbeck should be paid a salary of $10,000 per win. Instead of making $210,000 per year, he'd be earning about $50k, which is about right for his performance. He has a proven track record of not winning close games, and his teams are generally undisciplined. "You are what your record says you are" Marshall. Not what you think it should be because you almost beat the #12 team in the country.
4. Looking forward, I apply Occam’s razor to my prediction of the rest of the year: do not assume the DB’s will play well, do not assume the coaching will improve (or any real change will be made), do not assume these stupid, senseless penalties will abate. This team is going to go 1-2, finish 5-7 with a close loss to UC Dungpile and Cal Poly (two teams we should destroy), and Sperbeck is coming back next year. Yeah, it sucks, because next year we probably pull out a big win, and go 5-7 again, but that is the fun of being a Sac State Football fan. You get the comedic value of a full implosion complemented by absurd officiating almost every weekend between September and November. How can you beat that?
