Week 10 - Sac State vs Weber State

The 6th ranked Hornets (6-2, 4-0 BSC) host the 3rd ranked Weber State (6-2, 4-0 BSC) Wildcats in a heavyweight matchup that will give the winner an inside track to the Big Sky Conference title. Both of these teams have yet to lose an FCS game this season. WSU is coming into Hornet Stadium on a 5 game win streak and are fresh off a 36-20 drubbing of those people on the wrong side of the Causeway.

Weber State runs multiple single back formations. They are a run first offense that looks to ground and pound behind their big OL with a gadget play mixed in every so often. WSU’s offense is currently ranked 85th/12th in FCS/BSC: 30.0 ppg (46th/7th), 350.5 ypg, 183.0 rush ypg (33rd/4th), 167.5 pass ypg (103rd/12th). WSU has played 2 QBs this season with Jake Constantine (51/80, 867 yds, 3 TD, 4 INT, 145 car, 412 yds, 7 TD) starting the last 2 games and putting up better numbers on the year. The Wildcats have 2 RBs that are big and like to pound away. Josh Davis (107 car, 690 yds, 8 TD) and Kevin Smith (90 car, 406 yds, 2 TD) are both capable of carrying the load for this offense. WR Devon Cooley (35 rec, 431 yds, 2 TD) is the top target for the QBs, but 4 others have 17 or more receptions on the year so this offense spreads the ball around when it goes airborne.

Weber State’s stout 4-3 defense is the backbone of this team and thrives on forcing turnovers (+12 TO margin on the year, 12 fum/8 INT). The DL is big and physical and completely dominated a week ago. The Wildcats are currently ranked 27th/1st in FCS/BSC: 20.4 ppg (17th/2nd), 347.4 ypg, 116.8 rush ypg (22nd/3rd), 230.6 pass ypg (71st/2nd). SS Preston Smith (46 tkl, 2.5 TFL, 1 INT) and MLB Noah Vaea (41 tkl, 4 TFL) leads the defense in tackles. 3 DL (Williams, Rodriguez, Tarlas) have 4.5 or more sacks on the year.

WSU has the best kicker in the BSC in Trey Tuttle (15/17 FG, 25/26 PAT) who is virtually automatic and has a long of 52 on the year. Their net punting numbers (41.2 ypp, 2nd BSC) are atop the BSC and if WR/KR Rashid Shaheed is healthy, they’ll have a dangerous weapon in the return game.

This week's matchup has a lot of interesting similarities. Both teams play an aggressive style of defense that likes to get after the QB (Hornets have 32 sacks on the year, WSU a distant 2nd with 23). And neither offense gives up many sacks (Hornet have allowed 8, WSU 11). The key area to watch will be who defends the redzone better. On the year, WSU’s offense is atop the BSC in redzone scoring efficiency (26/28, 19 TD/7 FG), and the Hornets are atop the BSC in defensive redzone efficiency (17/27, 12 TD/5 FG). Something has got to give, the question is by whom.

This game should be a doozy. I’m going with this hot Hornet team to jump on the scoreboard early and get Weber away from their ground and pound gameplan.

Stingers Up!

Good summary SD. Only thing that I would add is that Weber has a third back who has been seeing a lot of action lately as well in Kris Jackson. He's big and strong and they like to use him near the goal line. Kind of a three headed monster now with these three backs. Each has had 100 yard games this season. You'll see them rotate them all game to keep them fresh.

Never thought we'd see the day when these two schools had a top ten matchup. Both programs have come a long way. For Sac St it's come really fast. Hope they remain strong for years to come. We always want a strong conference.

Sorry that your entire state seems to be on fire. Utah is sending several trucks and firefighters to help. How's the air quality looking for Saturday?

Sacramento air quality will be great for the game. AQI is solidly in the “good” range. All models show wind event pushing smoke south west, away from sac. 77 and sunny!

How has the quality of your home game streams been so far this year?

There should be a lot of eyes on this game. Game of the week and it is the latest kickoff on Saturday.

NOT GOOD!

Well, if you're watching on the local CW31, you should be okay.
I'm you're streaming from Pluto/WatchBigSky... :kisswink: lol

I'd say we'll get around 9,500-11,000 fans for this Weber game. Hoping it's closer to the latter. This is uncharted territory for the program so I'm holding expectations low and not hoping for a homecoming/Causeway turnout which is around 15,000+ consistently

Most the fires are in Southern CA. A long way away.

There are two notable fires in NorCal. Both 'around' 50-60 miles away (as a crow flies) from Hornet Stadium. One to the East, one to the West.

I'm less than 20mi from Hornet Stadium (to the North East) and the air is fine. It's pretty windy with only a slight smoke haze on the horizon. Nothing serious.

We'll see how the week progresses.

I'm not a fan of running out of ace back formations. Perhaps I'm a bit too old school for today's game, but that's true of many areas of my life, so I'm sort of used to it. Just give me a nice vanilla I formation, which I can change up with Z motion or aligning the Z directly in the slot, or by shifting the FB behind the guard in a strong or weak I concept. The nice thing about that is not only do I get the selection of FB dive, TB iso, and toss sweep, but I ALSO get the "look" of triple option, even if I predetermine the FB fake. All you get out of an ace set is a speed option....

I hear ya. I actually grew up running a version of the Wing-T offense. That was the first offense I learned as a player then taught as a coach.

But being a fan of both the Ohio State and Sac State football programs, I also appreciate the intricacies and value of the modern day spread.

Here's a nice video breakdown of a spread running concept by Urban Meyer and Gerry DiNardo. It's worth a watch if you're into learning about concepts:

This one is cool too, as is details how the RPO was 'accidentally' stumbled upon by a missed assignment by a WR:

I've been thinking about this game a lot and reading the press, watching some Weber film. They believe they're going to be able to run the ball effectively against us. Pride cometh before the fall!

After watching our D (especially the DL) hold their own against bigger, faster, deeper lineups @Arizona State and @Fresno State, I think Weber might be in for a big surprise. Their passing game does not worry me in the least. If this game were in snowy, cold conditions in Ogden, I think Weber would be the big favorite. But, Andy Thompson has been calling aggressive, smart plays all year long, and I don't expect that to change. If we can sellout and stuff the run on the early downs, Obinna will feast on 3rd and long against this OL, which is so clearly built to bully teams in the run game. Weber won't be able to score enough points to top the Hornets in Sacramento.

The unbelievable, never-thought-possible season turns it up to 11 with another white-hot Hornet victory.

I didnt see Choates in the CP game, is he out?

Choates was a captain, and dressed for the CP game. He was available to play "in an emergency" but was obviously not needed. My guess is he's dinged up, and they probably rested him in hopes that he would be healthy enough to play Weber, we'll see. he's listed on the depth chart for this week:

Defensive Tackle
95 Dariyn Choates (6-3, 270, Sr.) or
56 Dylan Petti (6-3, 305, So.)

Who is they? Nobody on the Weber board has indicated that this will be anything more than a dogfight. Not one poster has said that we believe we will be able to run the ball effectively. There is nothing but respect for the Sac St program this year. Don't stir the pot with made up BS.

Personally, I think it will be a very good game and the team that can exert their will on both sides of the line will probably win. Not sure which team it will be, both teams are very stout on defense and less stout on the offensive side of the ball.

Damn dude, I never referenced the WSU message board. There seems to be a consensus among a variety of outlets (Big Sky Podcast, Craig Haley, AGS, Colter/Nuanez) that Weber believes they can and will move the ball on the ground against SAC. They have every right to - but if it doesn't work, will Hill continue to pound the rock? Or take his chances with Constantine airing it out? That will be fun to watch.

Certainly hope you’re right. Every matchup is different. Just because they limited ASU and Fresno until Mike Alstott came in and wore them down doesn’t mean WSU can’t have success.

I honestly didn’t realize Choates was out last week. IDK how, because he’s such an impactful player that I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me I didn’t hear his name called at all.

The Hornets are gonna need him this Saturday. I hope he’s good to go and makes a positive impact.

You're still just making stuff up. I follow all of these outlets and I haven't heard anyone say this.
