Week 10 - Sac State vs Weber State

This is a good ole fashioned butt whippin. First time I've seen this team look beat at the line of scrimmage all year, including ASU and FSU. Weber is legit good.

Hopefully this team grows. First real adversity all year, let's see if this is a different Hornets program. No excuses, next man up.

P.S. We gotta gambler at HC. Most of the time it works out. The fourth down at midfield did not. Really put Weber in control.

Game's over, man. Weber dropped Thompson.

What? Over? Did you say 'over'? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!...

It ain't over now, 'cause when the goin' gets tough, the Hornets get goin'. Who's with me? Let's go!

Wait, who's the backup?

Weber is doing good, we get the ball coming out of half. Dunivway is the back up, we might be ok.

Lmao I mean, no PI, player slide with the ball, but if things aren’t rolling your way, you’re screwed anyway

So disappointed...

This Jake kid looks uninspired. You have an opportunity to take over a high ranking team and you’re out there playing with a poor demeanor. How can you be a QB and look like you have no urgency and desire to play the game. This is when a good coach out the young player in the position to instill confidence

The stars are aligned with Weber tonight. Good for them.

Two INT’s on plays they were beat. The INT toward the end of the half Marshall Martin was open and had a TD if the ball wasn’t badly overthrown. Then the DB celebrates like he made a great play when, in fact, he and his teammates were beat. Irritates me when players don’t know their place. You aren’t great and shouldn’t be flexing when the opponent hands something to you.

Same thing with Parker Clayton not being able to secure the ball after hitting the ground. Defense was beat again, but the Safety coming in late has the ball handed to him on a platter. Again, not a great play by the opponent but rather fluke luck.

Whatever.

Weber may indeed be a better team. IDK. But lucky plays like those when the defense is beat doesn’t prove it.

I do believe Weber came in with a better scheme defensively. For sure. Taylor’s offense moved the ball, but two self inflicted turnovers cost them a TD for their offense and led to another Weber score. 14 point swing in a 6 point game.

Weber has done a good job running it. Credit to them for that. But the coverage schemes on certain downs and distances have been Sac State’s own doing and downfall. They made it way too easy. I’m not saying the players aren’t accountable too. But I didn’t see the Hornets defensive coach put his players in good positions to be successful on those two big plays. That’s on the coaches IMO.

So let’s say Thomson is out for a extensive period. Season is over then? Back up QB is not gonna step up? If the kid is not even trying to be competent, then what the he*l are we gonna do? Coach gotta put the kid in position for him to succeed!

Rest him and hope we can win two more to become playoff eligible so he has a chance to play round 1?

And there’s another missed TD on another inaccurate throw. That’s two now. Pierre Williams has 6 with an accurate throw. And Dunniway got the throw off before the hit by the defense.

Plays have been there on offense. Just not making them.

The plays deciding this game so far are 2 poorly schemed defensive coverages on 3rd and 16 and 2nd and 11 and the overthrown pass in the end zone just before half and the Parker Clayton fluke INT.

Otherwise this could be a dogfight right now.

You’re so brave! Heaven forbid a long-sufferening hornet fans chirp on the team’s message board.

:notworthy:

No hard feelings. You have a decent team. Enjoy the ride. Playoff football is a very different experience, hopefully Sac St gets a shot at hosting a game.

Mighty brave and keyboard warrior-ish to chime in once the outcome was decided. None of them were here running it before or during the game.

It’s easy to front run once the game is over. I’m quite certain none of them besides SWeberCat02 would be posting messages here if the Hornets had won it. So I’ll ignore each and every one of them now. I ain’t reading or responding to it. I see a WSU handle, I skip it. Ain’t got time for those that run their mouth after the fact. They can talk to the hand :tothehand:

Moving on to the game, I know what I know and saw what I saw. It was just one of those games where the stars aligned for one side over the other with regard to the bounce of the ball and errant throws. Good for WSU.

It even happened on the onside kick. Weber State player on his back finds the ball in his lap after a Hornet player has it but loses possession upon hitting the ground. That BS happened twice tonight and both were possession swings.

Anyone with a set of eyes could see that Hornets had two TD’s they left out on the field. Both because of overthrows by the QB. Neither had anything to with what WSU did defensively. So no credit to them for inaccuracy of the QB, who has to make those throws. I see those same throws made routinely in HS.

Also no credit to WSU for the ridiculous coverages on the Hornets part. On 3rd and 16, it is inexcusable to not play 2 safeties over the top and leave your corner with no help to allow an easy three step drop go route. Daron Bland was even staring at the QB suggesting it was zone yet he apparently had man to man with no deep safety in sight.

Just inexcusable scheme there. Can’t have a player beat by 5 yards with no help on a 3rd and long situation like that. Can’t happen. No excuses for Andy Thompson on that one.

That’s really the only thing that pissed me off. It’s one thing to get beat playing the right way. But to make inexcusable decisions that don’t put your players in the right position is beyond maddening. I even detailed the 2nd and 11 ‘off’ coverage on a 7 man blitz earlier in the thread. Same applies to that play as above. Those two plays ended up resulting in 14 points.

Then add another 7 with the fluke INT to start the 3rd quarter and the 2 TD negating overthrows by Dunniway and it’s easy to see how this game unfolds differently. Perhaps WSU still finds a way to win, but it would have been a game.

In that regard I give full credit to Jay Hill and his staff for not making the same scheme/coverage gaffes the Hornets staff made. They were well coached and largely in the best positions possible.

Lastly, just like how Montana is back in the thick of things with the Hornets loss tonight — even though it looked gloomy for their fans after losing in SAC 2 weeks ago — I believe the Hornets are likely to be back in it in 2 weeks too.

I can see Montana beating WSU at home on 11/16. Unlike Sac State, they won’t make the same tactical errors with coverages in long yardage situations and I don’t believe WSU can beat them throwing it underneath. If Dalton Sneed is back for that game, I really like the Griz to win it. If not, Cam Humphrey looked great today so perhaps they’ll still have a decent shot at it.

The Hornets just need to take care of business against NAU, Idaho and Davis. But even if they lose one of those games and lose out on a share of the Conference title, they can still earn a playoff birth with 2 out of three.

Let’s hope Thomson is ok or that Coach Taylor can work some magic with Dunniway.

36-17 Hornet loss. Congrats to Weber, they played a great game on both sides of the ball. Hornet OL got dominated up front. The Hornet passing game wasn't on point prior to Thomson going out, and it needed to be against an opponent like Weber. The Hornet DL held their own (Obinna couldn't be blocked), DBs got burned and they gave up too many 3rd down conversions in key situations.

It going to be tough getting another win if Thomson doesn't come back (my guess is a concussion). Dunniway was thrust into a tough situation, but he was horribly inaccurate.

I didn't like Taylor passing on the FG in the early 4th quarter. Dunniway and the offense finally showed signs of life and going for 4th and 9 when a FG would have cut it to a 16 point lead was questionable. Add to it that the defense was stuffing Webers ultra-conservative play calling and the Hornets would have had the ball down 16 with 8 minutes to go and a little momentum. Hated the QB sweep on the 4th and short on the ensuing drive as well.

We'll get to see what this team is really made of now that they face some adversity. Plenty left to still play for.

Stingers Up!

I think we will need to win 2 of the final 3 to make the playoffs. Won't be easy, but this team can do it if they clean things up.

Yeah nothing Weber did was because of skill, coaching, play calling or forcing Sac mistakes. It was all luck........

PLEASE.

One of the biggest facets of winning football games is taking advantage of opportunities. Which Weber did.

Sac is still a good team that just got beat by a better team. Stop being a sore loser.

Agreed that WSU’s defensive line largely won the battle against the Hornets o-line. The Hornets moved the ball well enough until Thomson’s injury, but the Cats kept getting enough pressure to disrupt Thomson or hit him as he was delivering it. Also, Sac State had some success running it early on, but Weber’s defense stopped them from then on.

Agree that the Hornets d-line faired ok too.

But with regard to the DB’s getting burned in key situations, I still firmly contend coaching is mostly to blame for that. Go back and watch the two plays I outlined in particular. Based upon what the defensive front 7 did in each instance, they essentially had their coverages backward. What they did coverage wise on the 2nd and 11 is what they should have done on the 3rd and 16 and vice versa.

Daron Bland was hung out to dry on the 3rd and 16 and the coverage was too soft on the 2nd and 11 considering both linebackers blitzed (7 rushers in total) and there was no underneath coverage. Gotta have tighter coverage to defend the quick underneath throw. The opposite was true on the 3rd and 16 because they didn’t bring 7 on the rush.

I’ve seen little problem with Andy Thompson’s defense calls and schemes up until this game. He had been really good. But tonight was different IMO.
