Week 11: #2 Sac State at Portland State

The Vikes played SJST close. But got destroyed by both MT, Weber and Idaho.

On paper our Hornets should win. But games aren’t played on paper.

The Hornets need to avoid a let down from having won the past 3 games against ranked opponents and not take Portland State lightly.

IMO getting off to a fast start and dampening the Vikes hopes early would be a huge thing to accomplish.

Thankfully no rain predicted for Friday evening. However it's supposed to be about 35° at kickoff and get colder from there throughout the game. Cold and damp...brrrrr!!!

I do not see a let down. Coaches too prepared and team is more focused. Under prior regimes, yes. I do think PSU plays better at home but lopsided losses to the 3 teams we recently beat, I think we roll 41-14.

I watched the SJSU game. PSU should have won but some untimely/boneheaded turnovers and awful game management (a staple for them under Barnum) cost them the FBS upset. That said, I consider PSU a "best of the rest" type of team. They beat the "lesser" competition but get rolled by the top teams. Their defense isn't good and their offense is pretty meh. We should roll to a comfortable win in this one.

Week 11 - #2 Sac State at Portland State

The 2nd ranked Hornets (9-0, 6-0 BSC) head to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Portland State Vikings (4-5, 3-3 BSC). The Viks find themselves looking to continue a 2 game winning streak and solidify themselves as a “best of the rest” program in the BSC. PSU had a tough schedule to start the season and should have opened up with an FBS win at San Jose State, but fell 17-21 due to untimely turnovers. The last few weeks include a win in the Dam Cup at Eastern Washington, 38-35, and a win at home against a hapless Northern Colorado, 35-21.

Offensively, the Vikings operate a run-pass option offense out of the Pistol formation and shotgun. PSU also likes to spread it out in a 5 wide receiver set to stretch a defense. Quarterback Dante Chachere (135/220, 1778 yds, 18 TD, 7 INT, 95 car, 464 yds, 6) is a lanky yet athletic player who is their spark on offense. He has the ability to make plays with both his arm and legs as this offense has a very balanced attack. Chachere is the leading rusher, but running backs Jobi Malary (40 car, 244 yds, 1 TD) and Jaylnee McGee (53 car, 220 yds) help out on the ground. The primary targets in the passing game are Beau Kelly (38 rec, 565 yds, 4 TD), Nate Bennett (38 rec, 413 yds), and Mataio Talalemotu (19 rec, 405 yds, 8 TD), all of whom are capable playmakers with Kelly being the down the field threat. The PSU offensive line has some good size but struggles to protect the quarterback.

Offensive Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 24.8 (7th BSC)
  • Total Offense: 371.4 ypg (162.8 rushing ypg / 208.7 passing ypg) (7th/11th BSC)
  • Turnovers: 8/6 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 21/31 - 19/2 (TD/FG)

The Viking defense flexes between a 5-2 and a 4-3. This unit has struggled mightily in the passing game but is a middle of the road run defense. The Viks do have 20 sacks on the year so they are capable of getting after the quarterback. Free safety Broderick Harrell (50 tkl, 3 TFL) leads the defense in tackles while defensive tackle EJ Ane (38 tkl, 8 TFL, 6 sac) leads the team in sacks.

Defensive Team Stats
  • Points allowed per game: 34.8 (8th BSC)
  • Total Defense: 457.9 ypg (174.8 rushing ypg / 283.1 passing ypg) (7th/11th BSC)
  • Turnovers Forced: 8/2 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone: 32/40 - 31/1 (TD/FG)

The PSU special teams don't really stand out. Their return game doesn’t have any big returns and kicker Gianni Smith (4/5 FG, 29/30 PAT) hasn’t attempted many field goals on the season.

Hornet Team Stats
  • Points scored per game: 42.8 (1st BSC)
  • Points allowed per game: 22.4 (4th BSC)
  • Total Offense: 490.6 ypg (258.9 rushing ypg / 231.73 passing ypg) (2nd/7th BSC)
  • Total Defense: 368.1 ypg (117.7 rushing ypg / 250.4 passing ypg) (2nd/9th BSC)
  • Turnovers: 10/5 (INT/Fum)
  • Turnovers Forced: 8/6 (INT/Fum)
  • Redzone Offense: 43/49 - 36/7 (TD/FG)
  • Redzone Defense: 24/28 - 19/5 (TD/FG)

The Viks are looking to continue their strong finish to the season by playing spoiler in this one. They do catch the Hornets coming off of a short week following an emotional and physical road game at Ogden. For as scrappy as this PSU team is, unfortunately for them the Hornets are the better team across the board. The Hornets should win this so long as they show up and take care of business. I have the Hornets with a comfortable win at Hillsboro Stadium.

Stingers Up!

The Hornets road record under Coach Taylor and staff — especially against FCS opponents — certainly supports this take. They always seem to have the players ready to play.

However this current season is uncharted territory. And the Hornets are now becoming the hunted. Getting every opponents full attention and best shot.

While I tend to share your optimism, there’s also a smaller part of me expecting a shoe to finally drop.
Hopefully that never happens.

This season sure has been a joy to watch.

Surprised Nelsen isnt Honorary Captain for the UCFE game.

As for the PSU game, we gotta come out gunning and not stop. No turnovers.
PSU came back in their last game from being down alot, gotta make adjustments at halftime and as PSU changes schemes.

Definately a trap game, but if they are focused and execute, it should be ours on paper.

The Asher O'Hara interview is real good in this one.

I can't believe we made it to 10 posts on this thread before some felt compelled to say "definitely a trap game"

But, if no one says trap game, then maybe it really is a trap game and we could lose. So GCM is really just saying it to ensure the W.

Now I get it...its like when Urban criticizes the way the coaching staff calls/manages a game and thinks by posting it here it will change the outcome of the next game.

I regret to inform you that the mid-30s forecast did not hold, that 43° at kickoff and 41° at the end seems to be the current model. Wanted to see how well those making the trip would look being bundled… or not.

I suspect a few years from now, we might get a story from a disgruntled PSU athletic department employee about how things got botched to cause this game to be played Friday, especially when the local HS playoff games are also Friday night (the other “main tenant” is on the road). I’m laying a bet on the city of Hillsboro and staffing issues being a factor. Or maybe PSU missed a rent payment.

Back to the game, I’m pretty certain there is a wrinkle PSU can unleash to make things interesting. I’m not telling, naturally.

Maybe they're bringing in Ryan Coogler for that game?

Thought about that, might be busy with Black Panther sequel releasing today?

Since you glean and add so much value to this place, I felt it necessary to put the cookies on the bottom shelf for fools like you. You know, equality.
