Week 12 - Sac State at Cal Poly

You people get too hung up on the past and what other programs are doing. They have a senior laden roster with the best RB in FCS. We're going at it with a redshirt freshman quarterback because our projected senior starting quarterback quit. Anyone expecting no fall off and no mistakes with Conklin at the helm is not living in reality.

Bobby had a sub-par game plan today. I get that we have a lot of 2nd and 3rd string players starting on the offensive line, but the running game still needs to be utilized, if anything to keep the defense honest.
I don’t want this season to become our future.

You lack confidence to make changes.

FUCD has new coach and he kicked Azz first year!

Our coaches are experienced with our roster and our SUCCESS!

You must enjoy being a bottom dweller. This implosion shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Week to Week I haven’t seen improvement.

I only hear from you each week. It’s okay, it’s expected, no need for change, have patience.

Starting to think you are OC Bobby F in here trying to save your own job with a ghost name in team chat. Are you related to him or something? 😂

What’s the deal?

This season was toast the second KB quit on this program. Anyone retaining the lofty expectations with an offense that was thrust upon a freshman quarterback is not rooted in reality.

Conklin makes mistakes, it's going to happen. He will learn from it and move on. And yes, a loss to Wulff is embarrassing, no other way around that.
Season was toast when Bobby was our OC year 2.

Bobby didn’t manage his QB’s very well.

Bobby didn’t prepare his other QB’s knowing BOTH how fragile KB is and also that he’s not a team player and might throw tantrum and run away,

All goes back to the person in charge of the offensive resources and play calling, The players talents are the ASSETS.

So this staff put all their eggs in the basket of an up and down QB who is made of glass.... and they are then shocked when it doesn't work out? Again, that's ON THE COACHING STAFF.
What program doesn't put all the eggs in their returning senior quarterback basket?

Are you friends of the family or something? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here.
No, just a long time fan that seen us burn through a lot of subpar quarterbacks in the D1 era to know we finally got a special talent on our roster. Going into this week, Conklin was in the top 3 in a lot of passing categories in the BSC, to see the checkers players on this board not able to understand the talent and potential we have in Conklin is mindboggling. Even more ludicrous when some of the checkers players are ok with him leaving the team. The fact that some folks are willing to change direction from a redshirt quarterback that is trending upwards for an complete unknown in the portal leaves me perplexed.

Conklin is damn good. The coaches are putting all their eggs in that basket. I do not fault them for doing so. Andy and Bobby have next year to figure it out. If they can't turn it around, the reset button needs to be smashed by Orr. It's not a hard or questionable stance to take.

Sorry… but you must always prepare for the unexpected.

Injuries, Transfer Portal, or Tantrum run away on your team,

A team always needs quality back up QB’s. You know that’s true too.
Walk me through how the coaches could have prepared for their returning senior quarterback from quitting after week 2?

Copy and paste of my post on the "coaches should have been ready" from the other thread. Seriously, someone walk me through how the coaches could have "been prepared" for KB quitting.:

I'm not sure how it's on the coaches for not having a plan to replace their quitter starting senior quarterback on the fly other than going with the redshirt freshman who was being groomed to take over anyways.

In what world would a talented and desirable transfer quarterback want to come to a program where a true freshman got significant reps the season prior and is the obvious heir apparent? Even if the coaches pre-emptively bounced KB in the offseason, you think players would want to come to a program whose coaches bounced their senior quarterback that just led them to a post season win? Do you people understand that only a non-serious program would pull such a ridiculous move? You think KB and his crew wouldn't blast such a move all over SM and knee cap any chances of landing serious recruits/transfers?

You people need to get with the times and start thinking things through before posting utter nonsense. Nothing anyone has posted about this situation has considered the ramifications free agency has on the situation. It's all just emotional knee jerk reactions to placate a desire to win games that are already over.

I said this before and I'll say this again, yes it sucks that KB quit on this team and put the program in this situation, but all this really did was speed up the Conklin timeline by a season. Did people seriously think because Conklin would have gotten another season of spot starts and limited reps behind KB that it would be enough for him to tear through the '25 schedule? If anything this season is a boon for Conklin considering he gets to throw to two very experienced and talented receivers in Gipson and Grover and kickstart his development. I just hope Conklin sticks around because no doubt he'll get some offers this offseason, but he certainly won't be here if Coach Fresques is axed.

You people need to stop dooming. Yes the losing sucks, yes the coaches are accountable for the sub par results this season, yes there should be some changes to the staff, no Andy and Bobby shouldn't get fired. If these coaches can keep Conklin and surround him with talent then this Hornet offense will be very exciting to watch for years to come.

I’d let Coach AT make changes himself to his staff.

Based upon the type of changes he’d make he’d either gain or lose my confidence in his choices.

The X Factor to save HC is he better start showing success Recruiting. He needs depth across his team.

If a great coach suddenly became available like Tro Taylor getting Fired as an unexpected yet upgrade in a HC then I’d make the move and offer AT back his DC role unless he’d rather resign in that scenario.

If you are in touch w your players. You see personalities that are a nice tell.

If you see his ability to easily get injured. Make plays taking big contact hits rather than sliding.

If you see a QB being divisive and stubborn to coaching I’d see red flags,

Same on how they deal w fans. Social media etc.
Team Player or Selfish Player! Bad temper?
Mentor to younger players? Or a conceited jerk?

Coaches should know these traits on every player.

However no team should have only 1 RS freshman QB ready to be backup, we recruited others but appears none of them were able to play better than Conklin.

Totally understandable. Conklin is a solid QB but he’s a freshman and needs more development from a solid QB coach.

Maybe our OC genius could have run 2 QB system w Conklin and maybe the 3rd string QB who was a good scrambler in red zone situations?

I’m not an OC or. QB Coach but these things are common sense in business too.

Yes. CFB is a business. Coaches manage talent. And they need WINS

I'm with SD. There's no way anyone could have foreseen KB turning into a coward. The coaching staff has done a very poor job, and there have been injuries. There will be changes, but we don't know how that will pan out yet. Next year will be better....

Ok, heading KB off of the quitting pass means bouncing him in the offseason. How does any quality quarterback recruit/transfer take a program seriously when you bounce your returning senior starting quarterback coming into the season off of a postseason win?

I would hope Bobby was instructing KB to not take unnecessary hits, but we all know that wasn't his style. KB was all about hero ball at the expense of his body.

See above. I suppose the argument could be that KB should have never been brought here to begin with. Valid argument, of course we that means we probably don't make and win a playoff game in '23, and need I remind you people about all the dooming that was going on because we didn't keep the undefeated regular season winning streak going. You people are even more on-tilt now because you can't come to terms with the situation we find ourselves in. You people are just going to have to get over it and move on. We're rolling with Conklin, deal with it.

Maybe KB had no intentions in buying into the 2 QB system, hence why we didn't see it last season? If any of the JC QBs are noteworthy, we would probably have seen them worked in by now. Maybe that happens this offseason, we'll just have to wait and see.

Agree the coaches have to manage the roster and ultimately it's their responsibility. But I'll never be convinced that axing Andy and Bobby puts us in a better position to return to success in '25...because rebounding for '25 was all that matters as of a few losses ago.

23-26 Hornet loss. Hornets had a lackluster showing at the central coast and head home with an embarrassing loss to finish in the basement of the BSC for the season.

Hornets had a head scratching game plan as Coach Fresques opened up with a run heavy approach and completely abandoned the running game after the opening quarter. Carson Conklin (33/51, 308 yds, 2 TD) had a solid showing through the air, unfortunately 2 costly fumbles were the difference in this game. Jared Gipson (11 rec, 133 yds) had an impactful game and Anderson Grover (7 rec, 63 yds, 1 TD) made an acrobatic catch in the 3rd quarter. Running game was quiet as Elijah Tau-Tolliver (13 car, 33 yds, 5 rec, 29 yds) had a limited impact on this game. Up front, the offensive line struggled on the ground game and in pass protection as well. Conklin faced quite a bit of pressure all game, especially when late when the Hornets were only dialing up pass plays.

As expected on the defensive side, the Hornets got carved up. The Hornet secondary continued to give up chunk plays and aside from an early stint in the 2nd half, the defensive line did not pose much of a challenge for the Cal Poly offensive line. Once again the Hornet linebackers struggled with contain on the edges. The Hornets had their struggles with the open field tackling as well.

Hornet special teams had a solid game with the kick return game having some big returns and did well covering punts and kickoffs. Zach Scheiner (3/3 FG, 2/2 PAT) was perfect on the day with a long of 48 yards.

Here are my takeaways from the game:
  • Hornets came out pretty flat in the opening of the game. There was some fire to open the 2nd half, but it was short lived.
  • Awful offensive game plan by Coach Fresques. Some running plays need to be mixed in, even in a heavy pass attack. Allowing a defense to pin back their ears every play, especially with a banged up offensive line, does not put the offense in a favorable position. A lot of the run plays that were called took too long to develop. More north and south running plays were needed today.
  • Conklin made good decisions in the air and took what the defense gave him. He struggled with the deep ball and continues to take bad care of the ball when running/evading pressure. He took some shots in this one and showed some toughness.
  • Offensive line struggled to keep a clean pocket. Some bad whiffs on blitz assignments combined with just getting beat up front allowed a lot of pressure in Conklin’s face all game. More running plays would have helped mitigate this issue.
  • Defense is a total mess. Injures are having a major impact here, but the defensive line had close to no push for most of the game.
  • Lots of freshman getting some run on special teams, that said…
  • Injuries continue to pile up. Freshman linebacker James Tivao was carted off with a likely broken leg on the 2nd half opening kick off.
This is an embarrassing loss any way you look at it. As bad as this team has been this season, there is no excuse for not taking care of business in this one and there is plenty of blame to go around. The task doesn’t get any easier for the Causeway.

Stingers Up!
