Just looking through the online box score. It actually looks pretty good. Offensively, it looks like the running game and the willingness to take the easy three rather than go for broke on fourth down won the day for us. I'd have to look through the drive charts to see if UNI had similar choices, but as an old school guy, I'll take the easy three every time, unless the game is on the line. Those FGs add up. One guy on the Sac FB thread announcing the win complained about O'Hara having 19 carries, but he never explained what his objection was. I actually don't have a problem with it because once you've accepted the QB rotation as Taylor has, it's good to have cross-up styles because that messes with the defense. But the nice thing is that the defense can't completely tee off on that because O'Hara was also throwing the ball, and he was VERY accurate in doing so, only missing one of eight. Sure, his passes didn't gain all that much, but perhaps the routes weren't intended to. The mere fact that O'Hara's throwing the ball, particularly if they're two-level roll-outs, makes it much harder for the defense to corral him. I like that. And then Dunniway comes back in to screw the defense by going over their heads with the bomb. That's going to work wonders for us, particularly in combination with the incredible power running of Skattebo. Between Dunniway and O'Hara, the QB corps did a good job of spreading the ball around, both passing and rushing (it looks like some jet sweep, or similar, was going on as well, as Martin had a carry). We outdid UNI in first downs, and our first downs were about evenly distributed between rushing and passing.
Defensively, most of the squad was in on the act as just about everyone had entries for tackles. There were 5 TFLs and a pair of sacks to go along with Mapu's pick.
On special teams, there were the obvious three FGs, to none for UNI (they did have a miss). The punter dropped two inside the UNI 20, while the UNI punter failed to do the same. That's good for forcing a long field on the ensuing possession.
The one true drawback that I can see is beyond our control, and that's penalties, as some of you noted in other parts of this thread. We were called more than twice as many times as UNI; I didn't see the actual flags, but "homer" officiating is quite common these days. We could have up and quit after that, but clearly we did not. This is a good introduction to what we'll see at EWU, at BBQ, and in the playoffs should we have a road game.
Overall, this game appears to be very much to our credit. Given the losses ahead of us, I anticipate us moving up in the polls, at least a little bit. This was an inter-regional game against a foe from a power conference, and one that's no patsy. I applaud the Hornet effort, and yours in following this fine team. I'm proud to be a part of this great group of fans....
