Holding on every play on this 3min left UNI drive!!!!

Better team is going to win today! Let’s gooo!!! Even tho we were playing against the stripes too

I wish TT would try to punch it in here. During selection Sunday, the scores will matter a lot when it’s closed between which team gets in.

37-21 Hornet win. Huge win for this program to go on the road at a MVFC program. I'll digest this win and post more thoughts later, or tomorrow, or whenever.

Of course there's not a large sample size against MVFC teams, there's only 3 OOC games a year. Bigger stat is both losses coming at home, and one was in the playoffs.

Which was my entire point. It wasn’t worthy of pointing out as if it was some kind of long-standing trend. In fact, both losses happened in the same season!

The fact the losses occurred at home also don’t have much significance to me (versus in the road). It’s not like our Hornets are playing with a huge home field advantage. Hell, they’ve had a better road record under Troy Taylor, no?

Regardless, after today’s game the topic is completely moot now.

Very big win, no doubt.

There were several things I was upset and disappointed with during the game — and at least one of those things is something I’ve been vocal about before.

However, when we ended up holding on at the end — I decided not to be negative and just enjoy the big W!

So all I’m gonna say is, let’s go get another one at CSU next Saturday! That team is 0-3 and going to be extremely hungry for a win. Let’s kick’em when their down!

I lied. I will say something else. But only positives.

It was good to see Deshawn Lynch and Ayodele Adeoye make a couple plays in this game. Many of us have wondered about the former, so it was good to see him in the game and making a positive play.

Also, I’ve been wondering what’s up with Devin Gandy. He was part of the receiver rotation as a freshman last season and even had kick return TD but has been notably absent so far this season.

Did he get injured or just surpassed by others in the rotation? I’d assume injury, as Gandy seems too talented a player to drop out completely. Anyone know or hear anything that I missed?

Does anyone know if Jackson Slater is okay? Didn’t see him in the game and on the sideline. Injury or just out of the rotation?

Lol, we’re all fans, what we decide to point out shouldn’t be subjective. What Troy has done here since he has been here has been tremendous, we’re all going to point out things that we want better. I am trilled to death that we won this game to get the National critics off our backs for little bit. Now the next thing on my Hornets bucket list is to beat Weber, I believe this is the only BSC team Troy era hasn’t beat.

Just looking through the online box score. It actually looks pretty good. Offensively, it looks like the running game and the willingness to take the easy three rather than go for broke on fourth down won the day for us. I'd have to look through the drive charts to see if UNI had similar choices, but as an old school guy, I'll take the easy three every time, unless the game is on the line. Those FGs add up. One guy on the Sac FB thread announcing the win complained about O'Hara having 19 carries, but he never explained what his objection was. I actually don't have a problem with it because once you've accepted the QB rotation as Taylor has, it's good to have cross-up styles because that messes with the defense. But the nice thing is that the defense can't completely tee off on that because O'Hara was also throwing the ball, and he was VERY accurate in doing so, only missing one of eight. Sure, his passes didn't gain all that much, but perhaps the routes weren't intended to. The mere fact that O'Hara's throwing the ball, particularly if they're two-level roll-outs, makes it much harder for the defense to corral him. I like that. And then Dunniway comes back in to screw the defense by going over their heads with the bomb. That's going to work wonders for us, particularly in combination with the incredible power running of Skattebo. Between Dunniway and O'Hara, the QB corps did a good job of spreading the ball around, both passing and rushing (it looks like some jet sweep, or similar, was going on as well, as Martin had a carry). We outdid UNI in first downs, and our first downs were about evenly distributed between rushing and passing.

Defensively, most of the squad was in on the act as just about everyone had entries for tackles. There were 5 TFLs and a pair of sacks to go along with Mapu's pick.

On special teams, there were the obvious three FGs, to none for UNI (they did have a miss). The punter dropped two inside the UNI 20, while the UNI punter failed to do the same. That's good for forcing a long field on the ensuing possession.

The one true drawback that I can see is beyond our control, and that's penalties, as some of you noted in other parts of this thread. We were called more than twice as many times as UNI; I didn't see the actual flags, but "homer" officiating is quite common these days. We could have up and quit after that, but clearly we did not. This is a good introduction to what we'll see at EWU, at BBQ, and in the playoffs should we have a road game.

Overall, this game appears to be very much to our credit. Given the losses ahead of us, I anticipate us moving up in the polls, at least a little bit. This was an inter-regional game against a foe from a power conference, and one that's no patsy. I applaud the Hornet effort, and yours in following this fine team. I'm proud to be a part of this great group of fans....

Agreed but some folks get triggered when you point out things that are contrived as being negative. What BHF is referring to is the play calling in the 3rd quarter that almost let UNI off the mat. UNI couldn’t stop the onslaught of Skattebo and Fulcher and the Hornets went away from that in the 3rd and the game got a lot closer that it should have. When the Hornets went back to what was working, they put the game away. It’s nitpicky given the success this program has achieved under Taylor (and the end result at UNI), but still valid points worth discussing nonetheless.

Overall a great game on all sides of the ball in the UNI win. This Hornet offense has weapons everywhere. It’s not outlandish to say that this offense is unstoppable when it’s clicking. We’ve never seen anything like this and it’s a sight to see. Only negative was play calling that went away from what was working all game, but in the end the horses got the ball and everything worked out. The domination up front by the line was the most impressive aspect of the offense imo.

Defense was the story in this one. UNI’s offense is pretty potent and for the most part the Hornet defense did more than it needed to do to keep them in check. The defense started out great with some 3 and outs. Even when UNI would seem to get things moving, the bend but don’t break mentality stood out and the Hornets would force a turnover or get a stop (that stop late in the 2nd that resulted in a missed UNI FG was big). Only knocks that I saw were that the Hornets struggled to get pressure without a blitz and there was some spotty open field tackling at times, that said a performance like this is more than enough to get a win if the Hornet offense is doing its thing.

Special teams were solid as well. Sentkowski was clutch with he FGs and the punting helped the Hornets win the field position aspect of the game.

Excellent team win.

That op is starting to gel, they've only been working together since fall camp started where the previous trio worked together for 19 months between the end of 2019 and the start of the 2021 season. We also had a change at holder against UNI from the first outing, maybe that was the final tweak needed for that unit? Time will tell, but they all looked sharp against Northern Iowa.

Most everything is subjective, brother. That’s what opinions are.

Anyway, we’re all Hornets fans here. Our time is better served enjoying the unparalleled success we’re in the midst of watching, rather than bickering over the unimportant. So for that reason I’ll retreat to doing just that.

You’re 100% correct. The transformation under TT has indeed been tremendous and what we all hoped would happen. Let’s go get one against CSU next week and against Weber like you said.

What impressed me was the way our O and D lines held up against the Iowa beef wall. UNI has a massive Oline and I was impressed that we responded with tenacity, schemes and smart play.

The Mapu INT was beautiful and countered the game commentators quip earlier. Really took the wind out of their sales.

If there ever was an opportunity for a FBS scalp, this week is it.

I am more concerned with Weber than any other team on the schedule at this point.

Agreed about the lines. Good callout.

Agreed, and yes CSU is a very winnable game. Based on what I've seen, I'd consider UNI as the tougher game than CSU. That said, CSU has 22 more scholarships to use so depth could come into play coming off a physical game at UNI.
